The end of theosophical history?
That book makes theosophists feel that the subject of theosophical history is done. Aren't all questions answered? Aren't all controversies dealt with?
He said it with a mournful air - but it is also a tribute to the quality of this book. It's read by theosophists everywhere - of whatever theosophical organisation.
Read this book - and you will understand the life of the theosophical movement. You will know what makes us tick.
Self Sacrifice and Devotion
The most important character traits to come out of this biography are: self sacrifice and Devotion to Truth.
Both of these virtues were taught by Blavatsky, as well as lived.
Self Sacrifice was mainly taught in her spiritual classic 'The Voice of the Silence, which was the first book in the West to popularize the Bodhisattva ideal.
Devotion to truth was what held Blavatsky up as the world slandered her and two thirds of her supporters turned enemy. Devotion to truth also strengthened her as she battled illness and wrote her master piece: The Secret Doctrine.
The Bodhisattva Vow & the Secret Doctrine
Controversies dealt with in this book
- Did Blavatsky first deny reincarnation and then confirm it?
- Did Blavatsky perform occult phenomena (or miracles) - or was she a very good juggler?
- Did Blavatsky plagiarize most of her work?
- Was Blavatsky a nazi?
- Was Blavatsky a bigamist?
- Did Blavatsky smoke?
- Did Blavatsky drink alcohol?
- Did Blavatsky eat meat?
- Did Blavatsky teach anything new about the religions of the East, or was it all already known in the West?
Other subjects this book will teach you about
- Where did she go?
- Who did she influence?
- Who were her colleagues?
- What did she teach?
- What hopes did she have for the theosophical movement?
- What fears did she have about the future of humanity?
- What ideals did she have?
- What discoveries of modern science did she prophecy?

- Warning: this is going to be a rambling post. I've got too many thoughts singing through my head about this - and they aren't organized into anything clearcut yet.
- Blavatsky on Yoga | Hinduism and India
- Since we've been studying the yoga suttras in the The Hague lodge of the Theosophical Society (inspiring meetings), I thought I'd look up what H.P. Blavatsky has to say about the subject. Unfortunately I find she's so busy debunking misconceptions rampant in her time, she finds little room to talk about the real thing.
- Belief in Magic? The theosophy of H.P. Blavatsky | Theosophy
- Since the word 'magic' is often associated with the word 'miracle' or with parlor tricks, I think it's useful to quote H.P. Blavatsky on this:

- Reminiscences of H.P. Blavatsky and the Secret Doctrine - Theosophical History
- In giving an account of the manner in which Helena Petrovna Blavatsky wrote The Secret Doctrine, while yet the circumstances are fresh in my memory, with memoranda and letters still available for reference, I shall not shrink from dwelling at some length on my own relations with my dear friend and teacher; and on many attendant circumstances which, while not directly connected with the actual writing of the book [The Secret Doctrine], will contribute, I feel sure, to an intelligent comprehension of both the author and her work.
- H.P. Blavatsky, her life and influence Katinka Hesselink
- H.P. Blavatsky or H.P.B. as she was often called, was born July 31st 1831 (or August 12th western calendar) at Ekaterinosklav in South Russia . (*) She was one of the founders of the Theosophical Society and main inspirator of its work and theories. Her writings have been collected into 14 volumes of articles, one volume of stories (The Caves and Jungles of Hindostan), and two books of each two volumes (Isis Unveiled and The Secret Doctrine). All these go by the name of H.P. Blavatsky Collected Writings
- The Letters of H.P. Blavatsky, Volume One
- This book caused a storm in theosophical circles: how dare they publish letters that many serious theosophists thought were NOT written by H.P. Blavatsky? Well they - the vice president of the Theosophical Society, his wife and an editorial committee - actually thought the reader should decide for themselves whether those letters were by Blavatsky or not.
