To HRT or not to HRT

Ranked #13,006 in Healthy Living, #205,730 overall

HERE'S WHAT I THINK

I say that the risks of using HRT outweigh the benefits of HRT

A number of years ago we were told that hormone replacement therapy was the miracle solution to the problems women encounter as we age.

HRTwas going to prevent osteoporosis - no more curved backs and hip fractures,  remove sudden hormonal fluctuations - no more hot flashes or mood swings. Heavens, it was even going to prevent wrinkles!

But high levels of our own natural hormones can increase our risk of cancer. Medical treatment, including hormone replacement therapy, can also increase our hormone levels and increase our risk of cancer.

The Million Women Study, funded by Cancer Research UK, the NHS Breast Screening Programme and the Medical Research Council, confirms that current and recent use of HRT increases a woman's chance of developing breast cancer and that the risk goes up with longer duration of use.

Why take the risk?

The Change is not an illness

We are not sick

When we were younger the drug companies made a lot of money out of us by supplying The Pill. These companies made squillions of dollars from a whole generation of women all round the world. Can't you just imagine the executives scratching their heads when we all stopped using their products? Someone had to come up with an answer - more drugs to sell to us!

In this way, the concept of menopause as an illness and HRT as a cure was born.

We are not ill. We don't need a cure. We are merely growing older. Menopause is a natural stage of our lives, just as our puberty was.

It's not safe for any length of time. It's not worth it

TamaraKajari says:

It may be easier to take drugs, but it's not the solution. Change is a normal part of life and as any other issues it should be taken care of in a holistic way. To put it very simple: it's all in human psyche.

LetaRussell says:

I'm totally into the natural aging process even if it means an occasional flush! Fortunately, I've had few symptoms and have been able to manage it with natural supplements. No drugs or or bio-identical hormones for me!

Chris Lombardi says:

Noted gynecologist Patricia Yarberry Allen, my publisher at Women's Voices for Change, always says carefully that it's an individual decision, and adds that very few women anymore take Premarin and similar blunt instruments; that said, I'm a stay-away kind of gal anyway. And we agree hugely on that scam called "biomedical hormones" being peddled by Suzanne Somers et al.

susannaduffy says:

Consider the whole woman, not just some physical symptoms. Don't take drugs, take this new opportunity for personal growth

Short term HRT has been beneficial for some women. It's worth it

jmsp206 says:

I had an early menopause and because of this had terrible symptoms.Tried nearly every natural treatment known but I just had to go on HRT. I certainly needed this treatment at the time.
