    nice lens. Very informative.
  • Bill Kirk Dec 9, 2011 @ 11:18 pm | delete
I'm a relative novice at using .html code. But I have built my own website. To spice up my site, I'd like to add a non-standard border around an existing image. For example, I'm thinking of something like a border that looks like a picture frame made of old barn wood (or other "texture" image). In a way, it would almost need to have .html code which would place create an image space in the shape of a border, which would be "filled" (based on a certain border width) by the framing image with its own . It would also need to somehow be placed along side the .html code for the primary image being "framed". Given the limitations of coded borders in Internet Explorer, this may not be doable. But, logically, it seems like it should be. Another way to approach it might be to capture the image intended to be the "frame" and then superimpose the second image on top of (inside) the first, which would appear to "frame" the second image. Anyway, that's what I want to do---just don't know how to get there or even if it's possible.
  • Sojourn Dec 9, 2011 @ 11:31 pm | delete
Bill - I'm not sure what you might have to do to make this work in IE, but can you do a block inside a block? The first block would have the wood frame texture as the background. The second block would be inside the first block and would contain your image. This could create the border look you're after. The other option is to use photo editing software to create the image with the wood frame. It would look like two images but would really be just one.
  • dlcummings Dec 12, 2011 @ 8:37 pm | delete
That should be possible, but I would recoment using CSS for that type of manipulation. Not just your html code. I'm sure you know of this site but you should prolly check it out for some tips. www.w3schools.com

Well, I'm very trad and straight-laced and wasn't sure about all these borders and colours etc but my interest perked up with the 'how to put three photos together in a row'! Reading on there were quite a few other things that I thought might come in very handy. What I really liked though, is your inspired way of putting the code into the box it creates. This is such a fabulous learning resource. I can quite see why lens masters keep referring to your work. Many thanks.

This is an incredible lens! Thank you so much for all the time and effort you put into this. I'm going to use this a lot with my future lenses.

One small suggestion I have is that you might want to consider breaking this up into several smaller lenses - it would make it a little easier to navigate, and you'll earn a little more money with several lenses.

    Hello

I would like say thank you for this page of code. I only started my lens yesterday, and of course, it is nothing to speak of, yet. I was looking around to see what exactly squidoo could do in terms of features and I fell upon this page.

I have known html proficiently for ovfer ten years now, and saw that we could use the code, but I never imagined, it was as diverse as you have shown here. I have so many of my own designs that I have created over the years, that I think you have given me the inspiration to use those on my lenses, as well.

But as I said, I wanted to thank you because these snippets of code all in the same location, are great time savers, even for someone who knows coding. This page has given me a clearer idea of how I would like some of my lenses to look.

    take care, warm regards
    siserou

Thanks for your useful lens.It helped me a lot.
I created a button and pasted the html in my squidoo lens but, although it is clickable it doesnt appear as a button.I can see only its border and no text and colour in it.Can you give an explanation for that?
    Regards.
  • Sojourn Aug 10, 2011 @ 11:40 am | delete
Can you tell me which method you used for the button? Did you use an image of a button or just the code for a border with a background color? If the lens is live, send me the URL and I'll take a look. Thanks! Erica

The more I learn and work with HTML codes, the more I realize how much you went through to post all the information on this page. I've been taking so many notes I decided to create a lens for putting them all in one place. Some of what I learned from you is in my HTML Notebook if you'd care to see. Plus, I've been reworking my other lenses using your help in addition to help from several other HTML websites. Some are on Squidoo, some aren't. It's like having a whole new world opened up to play in. And I haven't even looked at your other pages yet. Really looking forward to that. Thank you again for being so helpful.

  • Karbyn Jun 24, 2011 @ 10:44 am | delete
Fabulous lens! I love it! Can you do one that shows html for making a blinking flashing sign, something suitable for "Home of the Famous . . . .(fill in your blank)"
  • Sojourn Jun 25, 2011 @ 7:54 pm | delete
Karbyn - A flashing sign would be an animated image. You'd need more than HTML to make the flashing sign. Create the image in a digital image software, animate it to blink, save it to your hard drive and then you can upload the image to a hosting location and use the image link inside the same HTML you'd use for any other image. There are some great image resource lenses that can help you with instructions on creating the flashing image.

    Thanks!

    Erica

So...I've got to admit, I had NO KNOWLEDGE about how to do any of this! I'm usually a "Mac" girl, but have relied heavily on "Publisher" for my jobs in the past...but had NO IDEA how to put them into action myself! I've been searching for some kind of a toolbar to alter my text fonts, colors, backgrounds, and I've even tried copying and pasting from a Word document with no success! Check out my post about cousins, the formatting is all thanks to you!! I will give you credit about formatting somewhere in my own guestbook. I'm trying to figure out how to "favorite" you so I can refer back whenever I'm posting. Again, thanks...was afraid I'd lose interest b/c I'm having difficulty already trying to upload images (they all seem to be too big or it doesn't accept clipart!) I'll be visiting you often!

This lens has helped me so much so I blessed it. Can you tell me how to put a quiz on the right of a picture? Is that even possible?
  • Sojourn Jan 18, 2011 @ 1:35 pm | delete
Lisa - just sent you the code. If you put the img src code in the text box of a quiz module, keep it small by using width and height to size it, and add the 'float: left' formatting, the quiz questions will sit to the right of the pic. ;) Good luck!

  • Betsi_Goutal Sep 27, 2010 @ 12:37 pm | delete
This is hands-down one of the most useful Squidoo-tips lenses I've ever read. I have it bookmarked in my browser's toolbar and refer to it almost daily. I recently modified your info on text boxes and images side by side to do a really nice formatting hack; check out this module: http://www.squidoo.com/lego-me-avatar-portrait-creator#module122014781 to see how I centered a single item in a Zazzle module, so it's almost like the Amazon Spotlight. I just changed all the colors of the text block to white and tweaked the width to 150 px. Please let me know if you'd like to include this info in your lens. If not, I'll write a separate lens but it seems to me it makes more sense as part of this one. :)

Fabulous info, thanks so much for this... I'd like to know the same thing Charity7 asked though - will any of these work with other modules? I'd like to spice up some shopping guides I'm working on, but they are mostly just using the Amazon or Amazon spotlight modules.

I think so - see the module I added just for you called Borders Around Bullets. You can find the hyperlink to that module in the first table of contents. Let me know if it isn't quite what you were after or if you have any questions. Good question which I think made for good, new content for this lens. Thanks!

Thanks so much for these codes! I have been using the code for text box and image, side by side. Every time I use this code, I'm getting an XX under the image side of the box. You can see the issue here http://blossomingbrilliance.com/2010/03/26/sometime-you-just-have-to-choose-to-be-happy/ at the bottom of the page. Is there a way to remove the XX? Thanks!

Thankyou so much for producing this wonderful lens...my lenses were screaming out for something & this lens has all the something's that I wanted.

I open this lens b4 starting ALL of my lenses now and my lenses both look so much nicer and receive a lot more 5*****'s & comments than they did b4 I found you. I have made probably around 12 lenses using this lens so far...but I still don't know how to add a link back to this lens to let my readers that this lens is responsible for my lenses looking fabulous...maybe you can add the link I need to use for me here?...as I kind of feel as though I am cheating you somehow & will feel much better knowing that I am doing only what is fair to this lens in return for what it is doing for my lenses...So if you know how to show me what I need to do I can go n add the link to all my lenses that Ive made by using this 1..phew ..bet you thought id never shut up eh lol..x

Oh, don't worry about it! This lens was made for just that purpose - so you can quickly copy and paste and go. I'm thrilled when people let me know that they used the info, though. I keep meaning to add to it but I've been tied up in other projects. Off to check out a few of your lenses and I'll shoot you an email with the code you're looking for. Thanks!

Thank you so much for all those codes. I don't know very much about html and this has made my life so much easier. I do have one question though. How do you make the width of the the border smaller.
  • Sojourn Mar 9, 2010 @ 3:15 pm | delete
Katrina - Let's use this example for the bit of HTML code that defines the border:

    border: solid 10px #005588

The code for the border includes 3 elements - the border style (solid), the border width (10px) and the color of the border (#005588).

To make the width of the border smaller, change the 10px to something else like 5px.

    Hope that helps! Thanks!

Excellent lens, borders and backgrounds will be appearing on my lenses soon.
By the way, it is possible to store your images within Squidoo, see:

I'm not pretending to be an expert here but if the idea helps anyone...

Brilliant lens - wonder if you can answer a question. I put a border on my intro module but it doesn't enclose the image - should I ditch the image as Squidoo defines it and park my images on one of my domains and use from there?

Thanks for that excellent page. I will be back here frequently I feel.
  • Sojourn Nov 1, 2009 @ 6:55 pm | in reply to hayleylou | delete
Thanks for the sweet compliments, Hayleylou! Greatly appreciated. Oh, yes, those chances to the editing modules makes the intro module both easier and harder to use at the same time. Easy in that I like the quick editing buttons - harder in that if you want to customize it with these border codes, it seems more intimidating.

It's not, though. There's a button in the intro module editor that says "Source". Click that button and you can put in the same HTML as you did before. The codes on this page will still work. Took me a bit to figure that out but it helped to go look at some of my older lenses to see how they converted during the upgrade.

    Hope that helps! :)
  • hayleylou Nov 1, 2009 @ 6:27 pm | delete
This lens rocks - definitely 5 stars and a fav - I will be returning all the time. Thanks. Just one quick question though how do you get these borders to work in the intro module?

I don't usually use this much emphasizing, but I am thrilled to find this information. Believe it or not, I just posted a question to someone's lens yesterday asking how they made the border around their text.

Actually, this all still works within the recent changes Squidoo made to the modules. The only module where you have to do a little something extra to make it work is the intro module, as far as I've been able to determine. In the intro module, if you click the button that says "SOURCE", you revert to an HTML box and can code just as you did before. When you're done, click "SOURCE" again to see what your work looks like and save. So far, the other modules I've worked in are still HTML ready.

    Thanks!
  • skiesgreen Oct 21, 2009 @ 8:05 pm | delete
The new lens format does not allow this html to be included. Have you worked out something else yet. It s very frustrating as I love the borders.

This is just too funny so I have to share it. I was doing a Google search for some particular borders and backgrounds. One of my searches came up with a squidoo lens, so I clicked on it. Squidoo has great information, right. Turns out it was my lens, Whispers of the Crone, where I featured this lens as my mentor in learning how to work with backgrounds. It is a great example of how backlinks work. (Don't ask my why it didn't pull up this page first) Anyway, just wanted to thank you again for this great resource which I use again and again.
