Make Bullet Lists Faster

Lists of bullet points are eye catching. They are a great way to break up your text and draw the reader's eyes to important information.

The big problem for Internet writers is all the extra typing that needs to be done behind the scenes to get them to look right on the page.

It's no wonder that many people just skip over it completely, but I can show you a quick way to jazz up your content with Bullet Lists with less typing, and less chance of making mistakes.

Making A List Using Blogger

Believe it, or not, I think that Blogger's editor is the best between it and WordPress for making a bullet list in this fashion. If you are making the list for either Blogger or WordPress to use on their own platforms, they work absolutely fine, but I'm going to take a list I had already made, and simply copy it.

Plain List

It may look fine here, but it was after a list of the songs on an album. I was actually featuring several albums, with different musicians lined up on each, so I wanted to make sure it was easy for readers to scan the list to pick out the musicians on each one.

Highlight List Text

I copied the list, and headed to Blogger.

Blogger

Make sure it is set for "Compose" on the top right. Click on one of the "List" Icons (in the center, the pointer is on "Unordered List) and a dot (or number for "Ordered List") pops up in the work area.

Blogger Start List

I just paste my text into the work area, which puts my list after the single dot, then I arrow down the left side and press "Enter" on each line. Each time I hit "Enter" another dot is placed where the cursor is:

Blogger Start List 02

Once I have a dot before each line, I switch to "Edit Html":

Blogger Finished List

Here you can see the unordered tags (<ul> and </ul>) and list tags (<li> and </li>), the little guys that make typing out lists such a pain, placed within my text.

Blogger Finished List HTML

I just highlight everything, switch back to Squidoo, and paste it into my module:

Paste List To Squidoo Module

This is how it looks when finished:

Make A List With WordPress

Sure, you can use WordPress, they are very similar, there is just enough difference to me that, since I have access to both, I use Blogger to make bullet lists to use elsewhere.

Make sure you are set for "Visual"...

WordPress Blog

I click on "Unordered list":

WP Unordered List

Which brings up my first dot, but instead of pasting my text with a right-click of my mouse, which I usually do, I have to paste it using the keyboard short cut (ctrl-v):

WP Start List

After I've pasted the text, I use the arrow down, and "Enter" to add the list dot to each line:

WP Finished List

When I switch over to "HTML" you can see the difference. Everything is spaced out differently:

WP Finished List HTML

When I move it to Squidoo and publish, it looks like this:

WP List Published

Some may be fine with that, but I don't like it, so I edit out the spaces to make it look like this:

WP List Redone

When finished, it looks just like it did when I used Blogger. It's still nicer than having to type out all those tags!
