WIDTH - No more than 700 pixels. Many email clients cannot display email any wider than 700 pixels.
HTML VERSION - Use HTML 4.0 to build your email template. It is never a good idea to use anything other than very basic HTML tags. Do not use the the following: scripting, embeds, frames/iframes, image maps, and attachments.
TABLES AND CSS - You should use table when ever possible as opposed to Cascading Style Sheets. Nested table are preferred over stacked tables for compatibility reasons.
TRANSPARENCY - Do not use transparency, some client support it and some do not.
FONTS - Use standard fonts available on all computers like : Arial, Helvetica, Verdana, Tahoma.
