Is Web Design the Next 'Must Have' Skill?

It wasn't so long ago that it started to become evident that everyone and their Grandmother would need to get comfortable with the use of computers just to survive in the world. Well that definitely came true as today, even placing a call to your local government offices requires interaction with a computer.

PREDICTION: The time is fast approaching when everyone will need to know at least the basics of HTML. (That's assuming, it hasn't already happened to some degree.)

If you follow business magazines and their predictions for the future, you will already know that the internet has only begun changing how we live. Yes, the internet itself is changing, looking quite different now then it did 10 years ago and what it will look like 10 years from now will likely not resemble what we are using today. With over 800,000 pages being created every single day, the internet is definitely here to stay for a while.

The general consensus as far as predictions are concerned is that 10 years from now we will see a whopping 70 - 80% of the population earning their living in some way through the internet. Today, while it looks like half the world is earning their way through the internet, it is actually less then 5%.

HTML and Web 2.0

As we move farther into the Web 2.0 phenomenon, HTML becomes more important.

With the evolution to Web 2.0 it is becoming increasingly important to learn HTML. Web 2.0 is a brilliant concept, allowing users to contribute to the content on the web; however, it means that we the users must become better at formatting and creating content that is visually appealing and easy to read. A block of straight up text usually keeps our attention for about 3 minutes. How long to do last when faced with a block of boring text?

Another consequence of Web 2.0 is that more and more employers are and will continue to require HTML as a common skill set for their employees. Learning HTML now and adding it to your resume will actually give you an advantage in the world of job searches.

The death of the paper directory is another prediction that is being spoken louder with each passing month. It actually takes less time to look up something on an internet based directory then it does a paper directory. Therefore, even the brick and mortar businesses will need to get with the times and do some of their business on the internet.

So what does all this have to do with HTML becoming the next 'must have' skill?

Some Important Questions

HTML is the next 'must have' skill.

Will you do it now with lots of time to practice? Or scramble to get it done when your job/business depends on it?

Will you do it the easy way with a great teacher and a step by step guide? Or piece it together bit by bit over months of frustation by yourself?

HTML is the spice on the internet. :-)

The internet is becoming part of the fabric of our social economic existence, one that will become increasingly difficult to avoid as time marches on. The internet is based on audio and visual communications and a large percentage of that is and always will be the written word. Without HTML, we would have billions of white pages with standard black 12 point font; not very appealing for the reader and not very effective for the writer. Even the simple bolding we have used in this writing makes it easier to read what we have written here...

-Why do you need to know how to use the spice?

Whether you are participating in the social atmosphere of Web 2.0 applications, writing an ad for your business or have a website, HTML is the spice that will make your public entries appealing, easy to read and eye catching. Even looking for a job is being done more and more often through the internet.

Did you pay to have a website created? Are you getting the search engine ranking you want? Have you noticed how difficult it is to get changes made to your website? What if you could do both for yourself in just a few minutes a week?

In order to maintain a reasonable ranking within the search engines, it is important to adjust and/or add content every single week. It only takes a few minutes - if you can do it yourself. If you are relying on a webmaster, it likely isn't happening with the ease, frequency and speed that it should be.

Everyone will, or perhaps does, need a basic understanding of HTML. Will you do it now? Or catch up later?

Hosting Companies

Places to put your website

Step one of any website is finding a place to put it. Here is a list of some of the options available to you. More to come later...
Site Ground
Plug and play hosting. Wordpress module. One domain name comes with your membership. Very affordable!

This is our all time favorite. We've been working with siteground for a couple of years now and we really like their set up in that most of it is module based like squidoo.

They also have an affiliate program and bringing 3 people in will get your space free for the whole year.
Pair Networks
We've been using Pair since the beginning of our internet adventure and as an all purpose, old fashioned hosting set up they've been absolutely reliable and consistant. They have really great support and they are very affordable.
Square Space
This system is far more then a hosting company. It is the most 'plug and play' of any hosting company we've seen, but they also have the price tag to match.

I would consider this program only if you are a professional with a bit of a budget and not a lot of time to get your web presence created.

Everything is included - squarespace replaces the need for forum software, blog software, a web host, databases, statistics software, and a host of other development and content management programs you'd need to integrate to get a similar website.

Wayne's Tips # 1

Have a folder created on your computer to store all your HTML pages along with associated images etc. Make sure there is a folder for each of your projects that are clearly labeled.

It is unbelievably frustrating to search all over your computer looking for the files needed to make your page work right. When they are stored in one place, it saves you a ton of searching time.

A Review of A Beginner's Guide to Website Design

A Beginner's Guide To Website Design.

Allow me to start by saying:
Yes, I am Wayne Parker's partner!
And...
Yes, it is unconventional of me to write a review for my partner's new ebook!
And...
I have very good reason.

Hi. My name is Kat and I want to tell you a story about how Wayne's new ebook impacted me.

I've been working on the internet for a dozen years or so now; yet, I could never wrap my head around using HTML. It seemed difficult, complicated and way too much effort. Of course, I had Wayne so if something really needed to be done, I would ask him to do it.

I was an HTML dork. :-) Simple tags like bold where beyond my ability to remember and apply with ease. But not anymore!! Here's how it happened:

A while back he told me he was going to write an ebook for beginner's who wanted to learn HTML but found the sources available to confusing. He was going to write the whole process right from securing server space, through basic search engine optimization all the way to a finished product - and he was going to write it in everyday language anyone could understand.

Great! Off he went and he wrote 'A Beginner's Guide To Website Design.' It wasn't that long before he was finished - he really knows his stuff!!

The time came for me to edit his ebook. Like I depend on him for developing our web content, he depends on me for most of the writing and for editing everything he writes. Fair trade don't ya think?

It took me a bunch of days to edit the ebook and during that time, something amazing happened...

Suddenly...
Yes! Suddenly...

I understood and could write most of the basic HTML he was teaching in his book - comfortably!!

I could probably create a basic webpage now. :-)

Admittedly, some strings of code are a little difficult for my brain to remember more than 5 minutes.

But... Now I have his handy dandy cheat sheet (one of the wonderful bonuses he gives with every purchase) printed out and sitting beside my keyboard - problem solved.

Pretty cool eh?

Now if my word isn't enough for you, please drop by the webpage where Wayne is selling his ebook. He has a whole page of testimonials there from other excited readers.

A Beginner's Guide To Website Design.

From this HTML dork to anyone willing to listen: Ya gotta buy this ebook if you want to learn HTML and website design in the swiftest, easiest manner possible!

What a trip!!

Killer Audio and Video For Your Website

Having audio and especially video on your website is a powerful tool. People enjoy watching video and listening to a voice.

If you are wanting a professional look and feel to your website - especially if you are intending to sell your own product or service, using youtube is probably not the best solution.

There are other options out there that are affordable that allow you to be in complete control of the audio and video on your site while maintaining that professional look. Here are just a few that we recommend...
Audio Acrobat
We use this one and we find it to be the simplest way to create, host and post audio and video on a website or anywhere for that matter. An absolute beginner to running a website would find this to be a really easy to use tool with great free training calls and wonderful support.

It is based on the web and so there is it accessible from anywhere.

Audio is created by calling into a phone line or uploading something that has been previously created.

Video can be created through on site software though we find the quality better if we create our video through the system that came with our web cam and then uploading the video for hosting.

You can also create (multiple) testimonial lines that your clients can call in and leave you feed back that you can later post on your website for potential clients to hear.

Hi Wayne and Kat! I totally agree with you about HTML becoming a necessary skill ... I'd go so far as to add to that JAVASCRIPT and CGI scripting. The term cascading derives from the fact that multiple style sheets can be applied to the same Web page. CSS was developed by the W3C.
