BACK TO THE BRICKS CRUISE AND CAR SHOW
MARCH 2009 UPDATE
1. Man, do we have a lot of good news to report to you this month so let's get started! First on the list is this year's 'Autorama' which is held at Detroit's Cobo Hall. It is the longest running indoor hot rod and custom car show in North America. Our exhibit area (24'x64') was shared with Flint's Sloan Auto Fair and Bikes on the Bricks, featured four vehicles, two custom motorcycles and two custom Cushman motor scooters. The cars represented were a 1972 Plymouth Barracuda which is heavily modified and owned by Bob Young, a 1967 Chevy pick-up which is pro-streeted and owned by Bob Meyers, a 1941 blown Willy's Coupe which is owned by Denny Lawrason, a 1952 Buick Wildcat prototype owned by the Sloan Museum, two custom Cushman motor scooters that are owned by Jack Campbell and displayed by his son, Rod Campbell and two custom motorcycles that were displayed by Forrest Motorcycles Works.
Our exhibit had four vehicles that were registered for competition and we are extremely pleased that all four of them took home coveted 'Autorama' awards. Congratulations goes out to Bob Young, Bob Meyers and Jack and Rod Campbell who among them brought home three first place and one second place awards. But it does not stop there! Our exhibit was given one of three 'Best Commercial Display' awards for having one of the best displays at 'Autorama'. All of us are much honored and deeply appreciate the collective efforts of all of the volunteers who helped man our exhibit and passed out over 14,000 pieces of 'Back to the Bricks' promotion literature. As like last year, this year's 'Autorama' is the kick-off of our 2009 promotion effort and we are off to a flying start. If you want to see what the display looks like, go to www.backtothebricks.org for the video.
2. We learned late last week that our great television media sponsor, ABC12, has arranged for a free Motown concert featuring the 60's group, the 'Contours'. The Contours will be backed by the Flint Symphony Orchestra and all of them will be performing together in downtown Flint on Friday night, August 14th, 2009. The 'Contours', along with twelve plus live entertainment acts will be performing live throughout the entire weekend and if the 'Contours' can't get your blood flowing, well I guess we hope that the sight of several thousand cars can! Your 'Back to the Bricks' committee is deeply honored with the generosity of ABC12 and their valued and continued support. Our growth is in part due to ABC12's promotion of the 'Back to the Bricks'. 'Thanks again' goes out to the entire staff at ABC12.
3. Our sponsor commitments continue to grow and one very important area of growth is our 'Platinum' level sponsors. ELGA Credit Union, who last year was one of our great 'Gold Level' sponsors, has moved up to our 'Platinum' level of sponsorship. This represents a significance move for ELGA Credit Union and their belief that the 'Back to the Bricks' is doing the right thing for our community. Last year, ELGA was co-sponsor of our first annual 'free pancake breakfast' which was served to the first 500 people showing up in collector cars. Talking with ELGA's marketing director, Nancy Schoenfelt, ELGA will also again sponsor in-part, the free pancake breakfast. Now how great is that! Free breakfast, free hot-dog lunch at Duke's Car Stereo, free Motown concert, free registration for all car owners and even the air is free. It just can't be any better than that. By the way, if you want to finance a collector car, give ELGA credit a call and talk to one of their loan officers. They stand ready to assist you.
4. Your 'Back to the Bricks' committee would like to take this opportunity to welcome our newest 'Silver Level' sponsor, Streat Fuel and Storage. Streat Fuel has been in business in the Flint Area since 1937 and specializes in commercial and home heating supplies but that is not all. George Streat seen an opportunity to expand his fuel supply business and now distributes Patrick racing fuel, you know, the 'good stuff'! George tells us, he will be selling racing fuel out on the 'Rolling Cruise' route on Wednesday and Thursday evenings and also in downtown Flint on Friday and all day Saturday. Five gallon cans will be available for purchase by those car owners who require the 'good stuff' which begs the question, 'have you ever participated in a 'Rolling Cruise' where racing fuel is available?' Probably not! This is just another positive twist that is being added to this year's event. George also has heated (optional) storage units available for rent. You can reach Streat Fuel and Storage by calling 1-810-232-0167 or stop and see George at 800 Erie Street, Flint, Michigan 48507. Welcome abroad Streat Fuel and Storage.
5. Dick Fortin, Safety Director for the state of Michigan's 'National Street Rod Association' informed us that they will be back with us this year performing 'free' safety inspections on your favorite ride. All you have to do is look for Dick and his crew on a golf cart that will be clearly marked 'NSRA Safety Inspections' and set up an appointment. The inspections will take place on Saturday, August 15th from 10AM until 4PM. If you see Dick and his crew out on the street, tell them 'Thanks' for all they do for the hobby and keeping the cars on the safe side of the ledger.
6. The Website. When is the last time you visited www.backtothebricks.org? Our webmaster and fellow committee member, Jason Chapin of Chapin's Better Letter, has totally redesigned the site. It was great before but now it is a total 'knockout'. You really need to give it a look; we are sure you'll be impressed.
7. Have you heard of 'Autopalooza August'? If not, it is an event that is being coordinated by the 'Motor Cities Heritage Foundation' which is affiliated with the United States Parks organization. 'Autopalooza August' consists of five major auto events that will be taking place in the State of Michigan during the month of August. Leading off will be the RM Vintage Automotive Auction which is held at Meadowbrook in Rochester Hills, Michigan. Following the auction, will be the Meadow Brook Concours d'Elegance which is held at the Meadow Brook estate in Rochester Hills. Next will be the 'Back to the Bricks Cruise and Car Show, which is held in the Flint, Michigan area from August 12 thru the 15th of August, the 'Woodward Dream Cruise' which is held on August 15th in several communities in Oakland County and lastly, the NASCAR race on August 16th at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn, Michigan.
A collective effort is being made by all five organizations to promote all five events with the interest of promoting Michigan's automotive heritage and tourism for the state of Michigan. All five events will be promoted thru various travel publications thru out the Midwest. For further information, click on the 'Autopalooza August' logo on our webpage for further information.
Well that's it for this month. More good news is coming so stay tuned.

APRIL, 2009 - MONTHLY UPDATE
1. It is with great pleasure that I would like to take the opportunity to introduce our newest 'Silver' level sponsor, the ATI Group which is an integrated environmental solutions company that specializes in maintenance of HVAC equipment. President and CEO Mike Bunting, who is a fellow car enthusiast, tells us that ATI's focus is on maintaining HVAC systems at their peak performance. In doing so, his customers are experiencing lower operating cost, less downtime, lower productivity losses and tenant turnover. One beneficial aspect of having your HVAC performing at its peak is lower energy usage by up to 20%. In addition to energy savings, his customers are experiencing longer life of their systems. ATI can set up a predictive, diagnostic and maintenance schedule for you with the end result of having optimal indoor air quality, increased comfort and as mentioned before, lower energy cost. They can operate around your schedule and provide you with the service and engineering support. If you or someone you know is in need of HVAC assistance, give Mike and his team a call at 1-810-230-6202 or stop by their office at G3419 Pierson Place, Flushing, Michigan. Once again, you're 'Back to the Bricks' welcomes the ATI Group on board as one of our valued sponsors.
2. We received a call from Rick Toldo who is with the UAW-GM Solidarity House in Detroit inquiring if we would be interested in having them bring one of their semi tractor trailer displays to this year's event. Obviously, we said 'Yes'! Their display includes a UAW sponsored NASCAR and other displays depicting the history of the union. Anyone who is familiar with the union movement knows of the famous 'Sit Down Strike' of 1937 which took place here in Flint. For many of the UAW members the strike was a defining moment in their history and coming back to Flint to join this year's 'Back to the Bricks' is like coming home. Rick is going to try to organize a UAW member car show which will be along side of their display. It will be a car show within a car show which will feature many of the UAW member's cars. Their display will be placed on the large University of Michigan-Flint parking lot which is located at the corner of Fifth Avenue and Saginaw Street. This is a perfect time and lead in for the next topic.
3. Your 'Back to the Bricks' committee has decided that we will have several attractions along with the UAW display that will be placed on the U of M's parking lot. The displays will be the antique fire trucks, antique camper display, the Professional Car Society display, food vendors, entertainment and vendors who are not sponsors but simply individuals who would like to vend new, clean automotive related goods. Keep in mind, our sponsors will still be located on the 'flat lot' in downtown Flint and in front of the U of M-Flint's 'Market Pavilion'. We feel that utilizing the large lot at Fifth and Saginaw offers us an excellent opportunity for growth and a potential vendor area. Hopefully, all in attendance will walk or take the shuttle bus to see the displays, entertainment and vendors who will be located there.
4. The 'Buckham Alley Bash'! A group of restaurant and bar owners who are located in the 500 block of Saginaw Street have decided to get in on the action of the 'Back to the Bricks'. They have collectively decided to get permission to close off the 500 block of Buckham Alley to put on the first annual 'Buckham Alley Bash'. The alley will be closed off and will feature live entertainment, food and beverages. The 'Bash' will take place each night during our event beginning with Wednesday night and continuing through Saturday night. You'll have to be 21 or older (or in attendance with an adult) to get into the alley. Rodney Ott, the owner of the 'Loft Bar' says he is going to arrange for great entertainment in the alley and promises that you will have a great time! The 'Buckham Alley Bash' is just one more reason to make it to this year's 'Back to the Bricks'.
5. Our entertainment committee (Bob Steel, J.D. Winegarden and Dave Wood) informed the committee that they have lined up no less than 12 live acts for this year's event. This does not include the bands on the 'Rolling Cruise' on Wednesday and Thursday nights or the headline show which features the Motown group, the 'Contours'. Speaking of the free Motown concert which is brought to us through the courtesy of ABC12 and the Flint Symphony Orchestra, will take place Friday night, August 14th at 7PM right on Saginaw Street just north of the river. Let me tell you, the car people are really getting 'geeked' about the concert. We can't thank the ABC affiliate WJRT Channel 12 and the Flint Symphony Orchestra for their generosity of bringing this great 60's Motown group to Flint. It will be broadcast live on channel 12 from 7PM to 8:30 PM on Friday night with continuing live coverage of the 'Back to the Bricks' from 8:30 to 9PM. It does not stop there!
ABC 12 informed us that they will be broadcasting from 'Back to the Bricks Rolling Cruise' live on both Wednesday and Thursday nights from 7PM to 8PM. If you want your ride to be seen on live TV on one of those nights, you gotta get it out on the cruise route and tell your friends to do the same.
6. For out of towners interested in getting a good room rate, we highly encourage you to give Gloria DeHart a call. Gloria is with the Flint Convention and Visitors Bureau and she can help you get the best rate. All you have to tell her is what price range you are looking for and she will do the rest for you. You can reach Gloria at 1-888-230-2585; it's a toll free call!

The History of the Porsche Motor Car
The History of the Porsche Motor Car
By Alexander West
In the 1920s, Porsche was the chief engineer in the famous Mercedes-Benz Company in Stuttgart. He later started his personal engineering plant where he developed a number of designs such as the Volkswagen. This was in Wolfsburg, where he was the head of operations. Volkswagen [VW], is now majority owned by Porsche. At the time of writing this article, there is worldwide crisis in the automobile market. The share price of VW rocketed, when it was announced that Porsche would be buying a larger stake in VW, thereby securing VW for the longer term. This now gave Porsche a foothold into the car companies owned by VW, like for example Audi.
When the Great War came to and end, the Allies imprisoned him. Several years later, he was released and was thus able to design his maiden car with the help of his son, Ferry Porsche. This design was known as the Porsche 356, which was a sports car that was similar in design to the VW. For example, they both used a four-cylinder boxer engine that was mounted in the rear. Although this model was a sports car, it is was a powerful race car, having a speed limit of 87 mph and 40 bhp. In addition the 356 was developed as a convertible but was later redesigned as a hard top car.
The car was produced in the workshop of an expert at restrained streamlining, known as Erwin Komenda. Erwin had been responsible for design techniques and sheet metal assembly at Porsche from the time of VW Beetle [a VW Beetle was in the 'Herbie' films of the 70s]. He was the one who came up with the design of the closed coupe, which started a tradition of sports cars. This fastback design was enhanced both by Erwin and Ferdinand 'Butzi' Porsche, Porsche's grandson, when they designed the 911 series. There were a number of distinctive features that made the Porsche 911 stand out. It had a sloping bonnet that resulted in the 'frog-eye' headlights and curves running in straight lines from the windscreen's top edge up to the rear bumper.

should be able to locate any number's owner, if you know where to look.
Searching For That Number
Your first stop should be a free reverse phone number directory. Plenty
of them are available on the Internet. At the site, you'll enter the
entire number including the area code and hit "Search." If the number
is a published land line, you should get the information you want,
including the name of the owner and the entire address of the owner.
If you're lucky enough to get results, then your search can stop there.
In most cases, you'll need to try a slightly different approach.
Usually, the reason you'll run into problems is that the number belongs
to a cell phone. Because there is no central database of cell phone
numbers, free reverse phone directories cannot return information on
those numbers. You also won't be able to get information on landline
numbers that are unlisted or non-published.
Don't bother trying multiple reverse phone directories in order to find
the owner of a phone number, either. Most use the same databases, so if
you don't score results at one then you won't fare any better at
another site.
