My Husband, My Hero

Jeff Sonnenberg and I met way back in the day, 1979, to be precise. He was all of sixteen years old and the cutest guy I'd ever seen. He's still the most handsome man on the planet, in my opinion.

We met and dated for a couple of years, and then went our separate ways; for a while.

I married someone else, had a child and divorced.

He moved to Colorado during this time, but I kept writing to him. Eventually he came back to Wisconsin to be with me and we've been together ever since then. (1996)

My husband is the most honest, honorable man I've ever met. He has more ethics in his little finger than the rest of the people in this world combined. He is kind and generous; he'll help anyone with anything when asked, although favors are seldom returned to him, he keeps on giving of himself.

Jeff is an awesome father, to both of my children; only one of which is his own. He played the role of step dad to my oldest boy and never treated him like a step child. He always treated him as his own. Not many men can say that about themselves. In fact, my son considers Jeff to be more of a father to him than his biological father. The have a good relationship.

Jeff is a laid back, down-to-earth kind of guy. He enjoys the outdoors more than being indoors, and he spends a great deal of time hiking with our kids and dogs, out in the hills.

He is soft-spoken and easy to talk to. He is a man who can't sit still for long; he must always be doing something. He is the hardest working man I've ever known.

Jeff is a black belt in Tae Kwon Do, and has been teaching martial arts in his spare time donating his time. Classes are held twice a week.

He is also a member of our town board of trustees, and has worked very hard to improve our town. Thanks to him and the other board members, things are changing for the better around here.

He has owned his own business, Done Right Construction, for more than 20 years now. He started in the construction trades as a teenager, becoming a Master Drywaller. From the ground up, if it can be designed, he can build it. As of this writing he is nearing completion of our new house. A house he's built virtually by himself, in his free time.

He amazes me with all of the things he knows how to do. Everything he does he does well. I think that is because he genuinely cares about doing a good job, no matter what the task. He inspires me to be a better person.

The thing that amazes me most is that he grew to be the person I always thought he'd be, way back when we first met.

He doesn't pretend to be someone he's not, and he always tells the truth, no matter what that truth may happen to be.

Personally, I think he should be nominated for sainthood due to the fact that he's put up with my mother living with us for the last six years. How many men agree to having their mother-in-law live with them?

My life is better because he is a part of it.

This is the house that Jeff built. It's almost finished!

Jeff is a Master drywaller, and can build anything that can be drawn. From the ground up, if it can be built, he can do it and do it right! He has been building new construction and remodelling old for more than 20 years.

I am thankful for the last twelve years.

The book that he inspired
This manuscript is a memoir, written by me, chronicling our fabulous love story. Beginning in 1979 and lasting to this very day, our lives together and apart have been a series of adventures.
