Hungry for Some Huckleberry?

When I arrived in Wyoming to work at Grand Teton National Park, I couldn't help noticing a particular product line which seemed to be sold everywhere...
Huckleberry.

Everything from jams and teas to soap and candles seemed to be flavored or scented with huckleberry!

I quickly discovered that this little fruit lives up to all the hype...and wanted to share my discovery with those in other regions.

Taste of Wyoming..and Beyond

All over northwestern Wyoming (especially within the national parks), as well as much of Montana and Idaho, you will see huge displays of huckleberry products.
Purple jams, pancake mixes, candies and more in pretty packaging explode off shelves in gift shops and groceries in and around Yellowstone, Grand Teton and the Jackson area.

So what exactly is this stuff? What does it taste like?
And what about those other whacky flavors Mooseberry and Buffaloberry sitting nearby?

Well, let's find out what all the fuss is about!

Huckleberry Goodies

Huckleberry tastes a bit like a cross between blueberry and black raspberry...slightly tart, yet very sweet!

I was driving through Montana this summer and was able to stop and get a huckleberry ice cream sundae in St. Regis near the Montana/Idaho line. It was sooooo good! But I have had chokecherry jam and I like the tartness of it. Thumbs up!

I am hoping to find a wild huckleberry tea that I used to buy in the 1990s from a company called Mission Mountain Meadows based in St Ignacius Montana. Each tea bag was packaged in a bright pink/fuschia colored foil wrap. The company also sold honey and pink huckleberry confection bars. The business in no longer but maybe somehow the tea is available. Montana archives say that the owner was Natascha Hagner. Anyone have info?

My grandmother used to make huckleberry and chokecherry jelly. I loved them both. I still help my mother make chokecherry jelly every summer.
    Great lens.
