Hungry for Some Huckleberry?

When I arrived in Wyoming to work at Grand Teton National Park, I couldn't help noticing a particular product line which seemed to be sold everywhere...
Huckleberry.

Everything from jams and teas to soap and candles seemed to be flavored or scented with huckleberry!

I quickly discovered that this little fruit lives up to all the hype...and wanted to share my discovery with those in other regions.

Taste of Wyoming..and Beyond

All over northwestern Wyoming (especially within the national parks), as well as much of Montana and Idaho, you will see huge displays of huckleberry products.
Purple jams, pancake mixes, candies and more in pretty packaging explode off shelves in gift shops and groceries in and around Yellowstone, Grand Teton and the Jackson area.

So what exactly is this stuff? What does it taste like?
And what about those other whacky flavors Mooseberry and Buffaloberry sitting nearby?

Well, let's find out what all the fuss is about!

What is Huckleberry?

Here are the details about this tasty wild plant, according to Wikipedia, :

Huckleberry is a name used in North America for several plants in two closely related genera in the family Ericaceae: Gaylussacia and Vaccinium. The Huckleberry is the state fruit of Idaho.

While some Vaccinium species, such as the Red Huckleberry, are always called huckleberries, other species may be called blueberries or huckleberries depending upon local custom. Usually, the distinction between them is that blueberries have numerous tiny seeds, while huckleberries have 10 larger seeds (making them more difficult to eat).

The 'garden huckleberry' (Solanum melanocerasum) is not considered to be a true huckleberry but a member of the nightshade family.

The fruit of the various species of plant called huckleberry is generally edible. The berries are small and round, usually less than 5 mm in diameter, and contain 10 relatively large seeds. Berries range in color according to species from bright red, through dark purple, and into the blues. In taste the berries range from tart to sweet, with a flavor similar to that of a blueberry, especially in blue/purple colored varieties. Huckleberries are a favorite of many mammals such as bears and humans.

In the Pacific Northwest of North America, the huckleberry plant can be found in mid-alpine regions, often on the lower slopes of mountains. The plant grows best in damp, acidic soil. Under optimal conditions, huckleberries can be as much as 1.5-2 m (about 5-6.5 feet) high, and usually ripen in mid-to-late summer; later at higher elevations.

Huckleberries hold a place in archaic English slang. The tiny size of the berries led to their frequent use as a way of referring to something small, often in an affectionate way. The phrase "a huckleberry over my persimmon" was used to mean "a bit beyond my abilities". "I'm your huckleberry" is a way of saying that one is just the right person for a given job,World Wide Words which was used by the character Doc Holliday in the movie Tombstone. The Huckleberry Railroad is a heritage train located in Flint, Michigan. It ran so slowly that it was said a person could jump off the train, pick huckleberries and jump back on the train with minimum effort. Huckleberry Railroad

Wild Buffaloberry

Shepherdia (Buffaloberries) are a genus of small shrubs which have rather bitter tasting berries, native to North America. The genus has three species:

* Shepherdia argentea - Silver Buffaloberry
* Shepherdia canadensis - Canada Buffaloberry
* Shepherdia rotundifolia - Round-leaf Buffaloberry

The fruit are eaten primarily by bears and are presumably so popular with bears because they contain a molecule that helps to keep fat on the body which is useful for the winter season. Buffaloberries are used as food plants by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species including The Engrailed (recorded from S. canadensis) and Coleophora elaeagnisella.

Buffaloberries are edible for humans. They are quite sour and leave the mouth a little dry. The berry is recognizeable by being a dark shade of red, with little white dots on them. They are rough to the touch, and found on both trees and shrubs.

Shepherdia (Buffaloberries) are a genus of small shrubs which have rather bitter tasting berries, native to northern and western North America. The genus has three species:

*Shepherdia argentea - Silver buffaloberry

*Shepherdia canadensis - Canada buffaloberry

*Shepherdia rotundifolia - Round-leaf buffaloberry

The fruit are often eaten by bears, which by legend, prefer the berries to maintain fat stores during hibernation.

Buffaloberries are edible for humans. They are quite sour, and afterwards leave the mouth a little dry. A touch of frost will sweeten the berries. Make jelly, jam, or syrup, or prepare like cranberry sauce from the forefrost berries. The berry is recognizable by being a dark shade of red, with little white dots on them. They are rough to the touch, and found on both trees and shrubs.

Wild Mooseberry

Viburnum (Viburnum) is a genus of about 150-175 species of shrubs or (in a few species) small trees that were previously included in the family Caprifoliaceae. Genetic tests by the Angiosperm Phylogeny Group showed however that they are correctly classified in the family Adoxaceae.Germplasm Resources Information Network: Viburnum

They are native throughout the temperate Northern Hemisphere, with a few species extending into tropical montane regions in South America and southeast Asia. In Africa, the genus is confined to the Atlas Mountains.

The leaves are opposite, simple, and entire, toothed or lobed; cool temperate species are deciduous, while most of the warm temperate species are evergreen. Some species are densely hairy on the shoots and leaves, with star-shaped hairs.

The flowers are produced in corymbs 5-15 cm across, each flower white to cream or pink, small, 3-5 mm across, with five petals, strongly fragrant in some species. The gynoecium has 3 connate carpels with the nectary on top of the gynoecium. Some species also have a fringe of large, showy sterile flowers round the perimeter of the corymb to act as a pollinator target.

The fruit is a spherical, oval or somewhat flattened drupe, red to purple, blue, or black, and containing a single seed; some are edible for humans (though many others are mildly poisonous to people). The leaves are sometimes eaten by the larvae of some Lepidoptera species - see list of Lepidoptera that feed on Viburnum.
