Hugger Fans Increase Airflow in Small Spaces

In areas with low lying ceilings it is often still necessary to increase airflow with a ceiling fan. Ceiling fans can be used to provide maximum comfort throughout the year by creating a cooling effect in the summer months and also a warming effect by pushing warm air downward in the winter months.

Unfortunately not all structures are created equally. Some homes have extremely low ceilings that are not safe for standard ceiling fan installation. In such homes where the ceilings are not 7.5-8 feet in height it is necessary to install a low profile ceiling fan as opposed to the standard ceiling fan models that are used in most areas.

Hugger fans when installed properly are safer for use in areas where the ceiling height is below 8 feet. There are many areas throughout the home that would benefit from the use of a ceiling fan and often times hugger fans are the perfect answer to a room with low ceilings that needs increased airflow.">

What is a Hugger Fan?

Standard ceiling fans hang from the ceiling using a rod otherwise known as a downrod. This rod may be long or short depending on the height of the ceiling and the type of ceiling fan. Long downrods may be used to bring a ceiling fan closer to the floor in a room where the ceilings are exceptionally high and short downrods may be used in a room with average ceiling height.

A hugger fan does not hang from a downrod. Hugger ceiling fans are designed such that they provide you with minimal distance between the ceiling and the fan blades. They are created with safety and space conservation in mind for use in places where the ceiling height is less than 8 feet.

A hugger ceiling fan gets its name from the position that it takes on the ceiling. It actually clings to or hugs the ceiling. These fans have blades that are closer to the ceiling than any other ceiling fans on the market making them the perfect choice for areas where the ceiling is already low.

Hugger Fans for Safety Purposes

National Electric Code requires that ceiling fan blades do no hang lower than 7 feet from the floor. In addition to this code, many individual state and county or city codes require fan blades to hang even further from the floor. It is important to follow these codes for the safety of yourself as well as for the safety of others in your home. Check local codes for more information before installing a ceiling fan in any area where the ceiling is less than 8 feet high.

Best Places to Install Hugger Fans

If you have low ceilings and want to enjoy the benefits of a ceiling fan then a hugger fan may turn out to be just what you are looking for. These fans are safe for use in rooms with low ceilings as long as the ceiling is not vaulted.

bodega A great place to install a hugger fan is in a bedroom over a bed. The installation of a low profile fan over a bed not only reduces the floor to ceiling height that is necessary for safety purposes but it will greatly increase the overall comfort in a bedroom by creating airflow that would previously have not existed.

Another great place to install a hugger fan is on a porch. A hugger fan can be used just like a standard model fan to move the air on a porch reducing the amount of condensation that settles on furniture and also to keep bugs at bay. On porches with low ceilings hugger fans that are damp or wet rated can be used to provide maximum comfort throughout the year.

Tips on Installing a Hugger Fan

In many ways the installation of a hugger ceiling fan is just like that of a standard ceiling fan model. If you are familiar with ceiling fan installation then you should experience little to no difficulty when installing a hugger fan. Low profile fans are a breeze to install.

Remember to always turn off the circuit that you are working on directly from the circuit breaker or by unscrewing a fuse. Always test the circuit with a tester before touching any wires. If you aren't knowledgeable about electricity or feel uncomfortable in any way, consult an electrician.

1. Identify all contents of the fan box—make sure that there are no missing pieces before attempting to install the fan

2. Secure the ceiling plate to the ceiling junction box using the existing screws from the junction box orhow to install by using the machine screws from the hardware package that came with the fan. (Make sure that the electrical wire is accessible through the existing hole in the center of the ceiling plate)

3. From this point forward you should follow manufacturer's instructions for the hugger ceiling fan installation. Follow the instructions to assemble the ceiling fan itself including proper blade and motor assembly.

4. In order to safely suspend the fan secure the suspension cable loop around the hook on the inside of the fan body. This allows you to begin wiring the fan without having to physically hold the fan up to the ceiling area.

Follow standard color coding system when attaching fan wires. Cover all connections with a securely screwed-on wire nut. Push all extra wiring out of the way and into the electrical box.

5. After wiring the fan, slip ceiling cover into place and tighten with screws.
