Hugh Jackman got in amazing shape for his role as Wolverine. He did so by working exceptionally hard to add significant muscle mass. In addition to his performance in the X Men movies, Jackman has starred in movies such as Kate & Leopold, Van Helsing, The Prestige, and Australia. Jackman is also an accomplished singer, dancer, and actor in stage musicals.
Hugh Jackman Training Approach
To turn himself into Wolverine, Jackman gained muscle at a very slow rate so that he would remain lean. This fit the role perfectly since Wolverine was a ripped comic book character. Maintaining strong, dense muscles was critical to Hugh Jackman's workout routine.Additionally, Jackman focuses on making his workouts intense. He would yell and scream and crank up the rock music to really get into character. He lifted 1-2 hours per day, 5 days per week. During the last week of his workout routine, he lifted 1 day per week and did running, yoga, pilates, and stretching.
Hugh Jackman Wolverine Workout Routine
Muscle Gaining: this was done through slow reps. Jackman took 3 seconds up and 1 second down for each lift. He even slowed down to 4 seconds up, 4 seconds down at times. This forced his muscles to grow and helped him add a lot of mass.
Strength Training: the focus here was lifting as heavy as possible, irrespective of tempo. He just tried to do fast, explosive workouts. By the end of his workout routine, Jackman was benching 300lbs+ and leg pressing 1,000lbs+.
Exercises included bench press variations, lunges, squats, and leg presses, amongst others.

In addition, Jackman's workout incorporated boot camp on every Friday. He would do bodyweight and interval training for an hour and a half.
