Living as a student in Hull in 2011 / 2012

I'm not from Hull! And I've only been here 21 years, so that doesn't make me a cod head does it? Apologies if you are true Hull born and bred, but quite frankly the rest of Britain's perception of Hull makes it impossible for you not to distance yourself in some way. I mean, come on, this is supposed to be aiming to be a top 10 city, a digital city at that but with the local phone company having a strangle hold and an indirect monopoly over internet access making this city the most expensive region for broadband in the country without alternative, it's hard to believe that Hull is forward thinking let alone digitally advanced. Still, you're free to talk as the slogan goes.

Being a student in Hull: a fate worse than death!

With one of the slowest economies, lowest achievement in education, highest rate of poverty in the country and a council that is cutting back all together on any spend that is of a cultural nature, it's hard to believe that there is anything worth being here for. If you are a student living in Hull and this is your first year away from home, you would be forgiven for feeling, well, a little deflated right now. Hull, frequently dubbed the back end of Britain isn't helped by comments from TV celebs forever giving the place a good kicking with words like "let's flood the place and all who are in it".

Student Accommodation in Hull - the best a student can get!

If you are starting your first year as a student or you are returning to University, housing is probably your primary concern and making sure it is affordable. With tuition fees set to rise dramatically following plans passed by the coalition Government and rocketing house prices forcing the rental market into an ever increasing price hike, never before has a student's pocket seemed so desperately empty. The VAT increase has only helped to exasperate the situation making student house repairs even more expensive to the landlord, a cost that he or she has to either ignore or pass on to the student tenant.

This all together makes the old and trusty Halls of residence a highly desirable place for digs, however, one thing to bear in mind is that Halls are MORE EXPENSIVE! and a lot less fun. Ok that's two things, but when I was a student, way back in the mist of time I had the best laugh ever in sharing an old Victorian house with like minded students. Getting back in at all hours without having to sneak past security! Sure, some of the places I was in was a little run down, not to mention uninvited guests of the small brown furry kind running between your feet and tunnelling through your bread (I mean for goodness sake take a slice if you have to but that's down right selfish). Oh and the time we found a mouse drowned at the bottom of a catering sized bucket of honey - Only when we had got down far enough with spreading the honey on our toast did we find it! Anyway all part of life's rich tapestry and my most favourite memories by far are living in shared houses as a student, and we got through many of them I can tell you!

There's a mouse!

Being a student in Hull

Hopefully your experience of being a student in Hull is a little better than the Young Ones YouTube video I added here but make sure you don't take too much of it to heart. There are lot's of great things to do in Hull such as going to the Deep submarium and the various museums, galleries, pubs, clubs and bars. Also loads of places to visit with easy access via train such as the great market town of Beverley, York, Leeds and Manchester as well as some great holiday resorts such as Scarborough, Whitby and Bridlington as well as some unspoilt coastal destinations such as the magnificent Spurn Point. Over the Humber Bridge there is the wonderful town of Barton upon Humber with some great gardens and pathways displaying some wonderful sculptures, garden displays, pergola walks and gazebo flowers in many landscape gardens.. Loads of things to do on the Humber as well such as sailing, jet ski, skimming and floating.

So when you are looking for somewhere to live in Hull, student accommodation can only be at it's best when you look for a real house rented direct from the owner landlord or at least a property management company who take a pride in providing real housing to real people.

If you are a student in Hull, my advice to you is, forget it! Have fun! Don't let 'em grind you down, BE STUDENTS! and DON'T WATCH CHANNEL 4!

(It's not like how it used to be anyway).
