The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri is how I am making a difference through charity.

My favorite quote has become "You must be the change you wish to see in the world" by Mahatma Gandhi. That is why I became a volunteer and a Board Member for the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. My passion for animals has driven me to the place where I can help give animals the voice that they don't have.

The Humane Society of SEMO's mission is as follows:

Our mission is to provide shelter and care for homeless animals, advocate the humane treatment of all animals, encourage spaying & neutering to decrease overpopulation of domestic animals, and provide programs and services that enhance the bond between animals and people.

Although it is a little lengthy, all that we do cannot be summed up in a short little sentence.

We apply this mission to the 5,000 animals that we take in each year. They come from all of our surrounding counties, sometimes from as much as 100 miles away. All of our funding comes from our events, fundraisers, memberships, and donations. There is a common misconception that all Humane Societies are connected and receive funding from the Humane Society of the U.S. This is false. We are each independent of one another. Occassionally we help one another out with a rescue or the overflow of the rescue animals and educational information.Click this link to make a Donation to the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri!

The Humane Society of Semo spends a great deal of time and effort trying to educate the public on pet related issues. We use our Mobile Adoptions and seminars from groups like Petfinder and the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation to help us in educating the general public. Our biggest issue that we try to get across is pet overpopulation and the importance of spaying/neutering pets. Pet overpopulation can also be tied to other issues that we deal with like Puppy Mills and backyard breeders. We also try to educate people on animal legislation such as Breed Specific Legislation, Dog Fighting, and animal abuse. As with other charities, another challenging factor that we deal with is how to get people involved and keep them involved. Later in the lens, I have highlighted several of these issues with a poll on Breed Specific Legislation, a list on how you can help your local Humane Society, and a list on how to avoid Puppy Mills.

Aside from our growing volume of homeless pets, I am very proud that our adoption rate last year was almost 14% higher than the national adoption rate. The national adoption rate was about 22.5% and our's was about 36%. This does not include the percentage of dogs and cats that we safely returned home to their owners. Not bad for a small shelter that has a capacity of about 80 animlas at one time. We do our best to keep current photos on Petfinder.com to help increase our pets chances of getting adopted.

Another thing that astonishes me is that our facility is a small two room facility that used to be a dog groomers in the 1970's. One room is the cat room and the other is our lobby/reception desk/and office that has about four people in it at any given time. Now imagine four people trying to share two desks and only two computers...lol. Well, we are hoping that our dream of building a new Humane Society will come true in the not so distant future. It wasn't until 1976, when the wonderful incite of a small group of animal lovers added kennels to the small building and founded the Humane Society of Southeast Missouri. We are located at 2536 Boutin Dr., Cape Girardeau, Missouri, up on the hill.

As a volunteer Board member, I try to participate and learn every aspect of the daily operation of our shelter. I have helped with adoption counseling, clerical duties, cleaning the kennels, and participation in workshops outside of the shelter in the form of adoption mobiles. I help with all the events, fundraising, educational seminars, and other workshops to further my own understanding and education to benefit the shelter. Here lately I have become sort of our online social networking specialist. Not only can we spread the word through our own website, www.semopets.org, there are all kinds of other free sites out there to be developed like MySpace,Facebook, Bebo, and Your Cause.

Along with all of the rewards that I get through volunteering at the Humane Society, I laugh, cry, worry and antagonize over all the different dynamics of the shelter. The most important reward for me is to see the difference in the lives of all of the animals that I have touched. You will never agree 100% with any organization, but you have the power to get involved and work toward the change that you wish to see in the world. I always try to instill in people that you do not have the right to criticize if you do not wish to get involved and learn the principles and methods of the organization. That is the key to change. I challenge each of you to make a difference in the world!

Breed Specific Legislation

Since the 1980's there has been a growing number of cities that have passed legislation to ban specific dog breeds. At the top of the list is Pit Bull followed by breeds like Rotweiller, Chows, Dobermans, etc. This list is growing and some bans even include any mix of these breeds. Even though deaths caused by canines is only 0.00001% among fatalities, this has been an issue that is rapidly becoming a problem when trying to find good forever homes for these specific breeds. When educating people on choosing a dog, I stress that children should never be left unsupervised with even the family dog of several years. Most fatalities from dog attacks occur in children 4 and under and in the elderly 65 and older. For children 4 and under, 95% of those deaths were due to the child being unsupervised with the dog or dogs. One of the first deaths of this year was caused by a Jack Russell Terrior that attacked a baby that was left on a bed unsupervised. Go figure.

I want to know what your take is on this topic. Should there be a Breed Specific Legislation passed for your city or state?

Ways to Support Your Local Humane Society

Humane Societies all across our country need your help! Below are some of the ways that you can get involved and make a difference in your community. Not only does it help all of the animals, but it can build confidence and character in every individual. Shelters rely on doners and volunteers to get the job done. So even if you don't live in or near Cape Girardeau, Missouri, reach out to your local Humane Society or animal shelter and find out what areas they need help in. Check out these ideas to get you started!
  • Give a little bit.
Donate food, old blankets, towels, or other needed supplies. On almost every humane society website you can find a Wish List of items that are needed. If you prefer, it is also great idea to donate gift cards from stores like Wal-Mart or Staples. You can also contribute to one of its special programs or events.
  • Lend a hand.
Volunteer your time. Bathe and groom the animals, walk dogs, or play with cats. Stuff envelopes for a mailing. Help publicize an event. There are also workshops like Adoption Mobiles that require a lot of volunteers. Events also have to be set up and decorated for.
  • Adopt your next best friend from the Humane Society.
Choose your next pet from your local shelter. There are many wonderful dogs and cats, in different shapes and sizes, just waiting for a permanent, loving home.
  • Help spread the word.
Tell your friends about your shelter's services. Join your Humane Society's email list and forward important reminders and events. Promote animal safety and responsible pet ownership. Celebrate National Animal Shelter Appreciation Week during the first full week of November.
  • Be a responsible pet owner.
Keep current identification on your dog or cat at all times. Spay or neuter your pet. Always keep your dog or cat properly confined or supervised. In addition to the basics-food, water, shelter, and veterinary care-give your pet lots of love and attention.
  • Vote for the animals.
Support legislation to protect animals. Contact government officials and urge them to support pro-animal legislation. Attend events that educate the public on current animal legislation issues. For example, on Oct. 16th, 2008, the Missouri Alliance for Animal Legislation if coming to Cape Girardeau to give an educational seminar to our area. Be sure you are registered to vote and educate yourself on animal law.
  • Be a hero.
Report animal cruelty and neglect as well as injured or stray animals. You may prevent suffering and even save a life. If your city doesn't have a Humane Officer, call your local shelter for information on what to do in these cases.
  • Teach your children well.
Instruct children in how to care for animals properly and how to treat them with kindness. Set an example by doing the same.

Tips for avoiding buying from Puppy Mills.

Here at the Humane Society of Semo we support finding an end to Puppy Mills. Missouri is one of the states with the highest number of Puppy Mills. Dogs are subjected to having litter after litter until they cannot reproduce anymore and often, tumors form on their mammory glands. They never see a veterinarian or receive proper medical care. It is easy to replace the breeding stock because they are considered disposible. They live in a small cage standing on wire constantly. Most of the dogs rescued from Puppy Mills have never experienced walking on solid ground, much less the joy running through the grass. The puppies are sold for profit through animal brokers, auctions, Pet Stores, and to individuals. Find out more about Puppy Mills and how you can help end their abuse. Here are a few ways that you can ensure that you are not buying a puppy that came from a Puppy Mill.

  • First, please consider adoption first. There are thousands of good dogs euthenized every week across our country because there is no place for them in the overcrowded shelters. Visit your local humane society or other shelters frequently and select the right puppy or dog that is suited to you. Every puppy purchased from a pet store or puppy mill means that another dog in a shelter looses his life.
  • If you feel that you must buy a dog, find a responsible breeder. Always visit the premises and see where they are raised. Make sure that they are being cared for in a healthy and adequate environment. Never take the breeder at their word, seeing is the only proof you will have.
  • Beware of newspaper and online adds. Once again, make sure that you see the premises and the parents of the puppy that you are considering buying.
  • Avoid "rescuing" a puppy by paying money for him/her from a breeder. There are a lot of breeders that will sell their puppies that don't get sold to individuals and pet stores on the side of the road, in front of businesses, and at flea markets. If you see this occuring, please call your local authority and report the activity. It more than likely will not get them fined or in trouble, but it will run them off at least. You do not want to "rescue" a puppy in this manner because it puts money into the breeders pocket and opens up a space for more puppies. The cycle keeps repeating and never ends. This is a very difficult thing to do, but these puppies are too easily replaced.
  • Buying from a Pet Store almost always guarantees that the puppies came from a puppy mill. Their bottom line is money from the sale just like that of the breeder at the puppy mill. Avoid buying a puppy that you cannot trace its origins to see the premise and parents.

The Humane Society of Southeast Missouri supports ending Puppy Mills.

There are not enough good homes for all of the dogs that are born.

Pet care you can count on.

Protect your best friend from fleas with Frontline or K9 Advantix. Other than being a nuisance, fleas can cause flea allergy dermatitis, tapeworms, secondary skin irritations, and in extreme cases, they can cause anemia. Did you know that it was actually the flea that was responisble for the massive spread of the bubonic plague? Yeah, fleas carried the plague from rodent to rodent and from rodent to human. Please check out these alternatives to keeping fleas under control.

Your passion is showing. Great lens! I volunteer at an equine assisted therapy center. They use otherwise unwanted horses to enable handicapped people to ride. The horses get a new lease on life and the riders experience more freedom than they ever could otherwise. I have also volunteered at horse rescues and at the Humane Society. I work with "at risk" youth and one of the favorite activities is to volunteer at our local shelter. You are sweet to advocate volunteerism. Keep it up.
