How Indoor Humidity Levels Can Damage Your Health

Humidity levels are often ignored when trying to diagnose health complaints, which is completely ridiculous as they can have a dramatic effect on your health and well-being.

What Is an Acceptable Range?

There is some debate about what the ideal indoor humidity level is for human beings. Some say 35% to 45%, others say between 40% and 50%. To be honest, the human body is able to cope with anything in that range. The important thing is to avoid extremes either above or below.

Why Do Problems Arise?

We tend to spend a lot of our time indoors, in artificial environments of our own creation. If appropriate precautions are not taken, it is very easy for humidity levels to get out of control and start to affect our bodies and homes.

Too High

When humidity levels regularly exceed 50% you are likely to see a dramatic increase in the number of dust mites, which is terrible news for allergy sufferers.

The damp air is also a perfect breeding ground for many types of fungus, mold and mildew, some of which can cause serious health problems.

If at all possible, the source of moisture should be removed. Failing that a dehumidifier can be used.

A good quality dehumidifier can be programmed to automatically activate when the 50% barrier is exceeded, but not all of them do this. There is an incredibly useful website about dehumidifiers at DehumidifierTips.com which will explain all the features that are available.

Too Low

Excessively low humidity levels are just as bad. This situation can often occur when the weather is cold and we turn up the heating in our homes and offices.

Obvious symptoms are a sore throat, dry skin and even sinus pain.

Using a humidifier to put moisture back into the air can be extremely helpful. Unfortunately, there are many different types available so you need to do some homework and find out which will work best for your needs. Top models require very little maintenance and will automatically switched themselves on and off when needed. There is a complete guide to humidifiers at HumidifierInformation.com which is an extremely useful reference.

How Do I Know If I Have a Problem?

The only way to be sure it is to measure the humidity levels using a humidity meter (hygrometer), which you can easily and cheaply by online.
