Hummel Christmas Ornaments

Hummel Christmas Ornaments

Sister M. I. Hummel, also called Sister M. J. Hummel, depending on which language, English or German, one uses, made astounding drawings of children that were first exhibited publicly in 1933. These drawings were made into three dimensional figurines by the W. Goebel Company. The figurines became popular, and collectors took notice. Soon it was not sufficient that the figurine be a Hummel, but that id had a certain mark, the older marks usually bringing the most value.

Eventually, the Goebel Company went beyond the figurines, and added plates, bells, and ornaments to the versions these drawings, and later similar work, would be issued. Normally, the Christmas ornaments are inexpensive compared to the figurine of the same image.

Collectors could join a club, and some special issues were made only for club members.

Two Types of Ornaments

One type of ornament was a three dimensional figure that resembled a Hummel figuring, or was in the same style as a Hummel figuring. These could easily be hung from a Christmas tree.

A second type of Christmas ornament was a flat image of a Hummel set in a beautiful 24-kt gold frame. I believe these were only issued to club members. They were made by the Danbury Mint, but Goebel had the rights, so a license must have been issued.
