Hummer History In 1979, AM General began preliminary design work on the M998 Series High Mobility Multi-Purpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, pronounced Humvee®)

On January 2, 1985, AM General rolled the first HMMWV (aka. HUMMER) off the assembly line of their new South Bend facility. The first HMMWV was a standard Military vehicle.

Talk about a slow, agonizing death.

After years of speculation and rumors or a white knight, General Motors Co. in Febuary 2010 shut down its iconic but tarnished Hummer brand after Chinese regulators rejected a $150 million bid by an obscure Chinese machinery maker to buy the money-losing SUV line.

The collapse of the deal represented another setback for GM, which had been working to shed unprofitable brands and focus on its four core brands - Chevrolet, Cadillac, Buick and GMC - after emerging from bankruptcy in July.

GM bought the Hummer brand from AM General in 1999 and went on to produce several civilian models.

A brand that grew out of the U.S. military multipurpose vehicle known as the Humvee, Hummer was lauded early on for a tough image but became synonymous with gas-guzzling excess when consumers became more interested in high oil prices and environmental responsibility.

- 16 inch ground clearance. This is twice as much as most other vehicles in its class

- 72 inch wide track. This gives it a low center of gravity, enabling it traverse 40% slope and climb up to 60% grade.

Little Tikes: Hummer - Yellow

We have actually had this for 2 years now, but I decided to write a review since we just pulled it out of the basement fo rthe spring. It was bought for my son when he was 4 1/2, he is now 7 and I was concerned it wouldn't fit him this year. However , we pulled it out and both my son and our 4 year old daughter fit with no issue. YAY, we'll get another year out of it. It is very durable and has held up well, also compared to my daughter's Powerwheel this holds a charge much better.
