Hummingbird Facts

A little information about these amazing birds!

Hummingbirds drink nectar, a sweet liquid inside certain flowers. Like bees, they are able to assess the amount of sugar in the nectar they eat; they reject flower types that produce nectar that is less than 10% sugar and prefer those whose sugar content is stronger. Nectar is a poor source of nutrients, so hummingbirds meet their needs for protein, amino acids, vitamins, minerals, etc. by preying on insects and spiders.

Most hummingbirds have bills that are long and straight or nearly so, but in some species the bill shape is adapted for specialized feeding. Flowers which have evolved to attract hummingbirds are often red in color and tubular in shape.

  • 1The hummingbird is the smallest bird and also the smallest of all animals that have a backbone.
  • 2A hummingbird has no sense of smell
  • 3Because a hummingbird can rotate its wings in a circle, they are the only bird that can fly forwards, backwards, up, down ,sideways and hover in mid air.
  • 4To conserve energy while they sleep or when food is scarce, they can go into a hibernation-like state (torpor) where their metabolic rate is slowed to 1/15th of its normal rate.
  • 5During migration, some hummingbirds make a non-stop 500 mile flight over the Gulf of Mexico.
  • 6During courtship dives a hummingbird can reach speeds up to 60 miles per hour and can average speeds of 20 to 30 miles per hour.
  • 7Hummingbirds are the second largest family of birds with 343 species.
  • 8Hummingbirds can beat their wings up to 80 times a second during normal flight and up to 200 times per second during a courtship dive.
  • 9A hummingbird has a heart rate that can reach up to 1,260 beats per minute.

Did you know?

Tiny ruby-throated hummingbirds fly straight across the Gulf of Mexico every spring and fall. That's an incredible journey for such a small bird!

I am an artist, so I like to color sometimes. I really like this lens because of the subject. "Hummingbird don't fly away, the sweetness of your nectar...", that was from a song. I think these are the most amazing of creatures, they really get my attention. Good work, well done. BTW, thanks for stopping by "Renewable Energy Sources", your comments were definitely very insightful. See you around the galaxy...

Very pretty! We love hummingbirds and are able to attract them year round in our garden. I put homemade nectar out, but they prefer mother nature.
