A Few Tips When Selcting Mat Board For Your Cross Stitch
SO you've got the hard part done and now it's time to get it framed so you can proudly display your cross stitch. Selecting matting can sometimes be daunting because choosing the right colors will set off your needle art while choosing the wrong colors may just ruin the look you were going for.
The number 1 rule when choosing matting and framing for your cross stitch is get what YOU like. You are not only the one paying the bill but most importantly you are the one who will be looking at this piece on your walls for many years to come.

Here's A Couple More Tips For Selecting Matting
Don't Always Go For The Obvious Color Meaning just because a cross stitch is predominantly green you don't have to mat it in green. In fact if you do you may just have this large green square on your wall from a distance. Pick out a color that is a lesser player in the cross stitch. If you must go with the most dominant color select a complimentary color, or go lighter or darker.
Always Frame To The Cross Stitch What this means is don't try to match you couch or accessories unless those colors can also be found in your cross stitch. Matching the furniture really limits where you can hang it and if you frame to the cross stitch it can in effect get moved anywhere and still look beautiful.
Don't Match Mats To The Least Dominant Color In The Cross Stitch This most often happens when someone wants to draw attention to a little seen detail. An example would be a red fox in the center of a snow covered birch forest. Essentially the piece is black and white with a tiny splotch of rust. What makes this design concept interesting is that tiny splotch of rust. If you mat the image in rust under the belief that you'll make it stand out, you'll just wind up ruining the affect. In this case choosing mat colors that are the dominant colors willn help you achieve the desired result.
Multiple Mats Makes For Easier Matching It is far easier to make two or three mat colors work on an image than 1. Multiple colors will help you tie in colors of the room and framing into the cross stitch.
Don't Get Carried Away With Specialty Cuts As a picture framer I do tons of specialty cuts on items and now with the advanced technology of computerized mat cutters it's even easier to do wild and fanciful designs. But here's the rub. If you do too much in regards to decoration your needlework suddenly becomes less important and not the item that most seen. Suddenly it's all about the matting and about the cross stitch that you just so lovingly committed many weeks or months of your life to complete. A little decorative design is good but a lot is not better.

- So wonderful work as well.. dearest Mona. I love Hummingbird and this lens. Even, I don't have any experience about cross stitch, but I confess I do love all your cross stitch patterns lenses. Mona Majorowicz of WIld Faces Gallery
My name is Mona Majorowicz I am a professional artist who has been making my living selling my work for some time now. I am an animal artist, (meaning I paint critters) who works primarily in Oil Pastel or Water Soluble Pencil.
I own and operate Wild Faces Gallery with my husband Mike in a small rural town in Iowa. There we sell my original artwork and prints, as well as do quality custom framing and offer Giclee printing for other artists as well as for ourselves. I have over 20 years in ate art and framing industry both as a business owner and as a working artist.
I maintain a blog called Fur In The Paint, as well as write a regular column for the equestrian magazine Apples 'N Oats about painting horses.
