Kentucky hummingbird watcher
The hummingbirds usually show up in Kentucky beginning in April and usually begin to leave sometime in late September or early October. I welcome their arrival and mourn thier departure.
The hummingbird breed that we see are the ruby throated variety. Since Kentucky is a state known for 'rednecks', our family refers to these little fellas has 'redneck hummers'.

Looking out my window
I've always been fascinated with Hummingbirds. They are unique in my perspective, because of their size, color and ability to hover while feeding. I've wanted to view them close up so I've purchased a bird feeder to hang at my kitchen window. I have a very good view above my kitchen sink to watch them any time of day. Since I don't have a professional camera to take pictures from a distance, I can still use my digital camera to take still pictures as well as video clips of the birds while they feed. Female hummer
Enjoying the sugar water
I've noticed the females will gather and eat at the same time but the males are territorial and want the feeder all to themselves, occasionally sharing the feeder with a domineering female who refuses to be intimidating by the male presence. Poor little 'redneck'
Such a tragedy...
We found one of our little 'rednecks' laying in the yard today; unconscious. We have tried to figure out what could have happened to our little hummer since he looked so young and healthy. We just presumed he was dead but I've been doing some research on the internet and its possible he was just unconsious and not dead like we thought.I took this picture at my kitchen window of a 'redneck' feeding. This is what the little unconcsious fella looked like before, we can't be sure if it was him or not.
Flowers that attract Hummers
Rose of Sharon
Hibiscus
Another flower that attracts the hummers in our yard
We seem to notice an increase in our hummingbirds once these flowers pop out so we presume they are favored by the hummingbirds. Petunias
Another flower Hummingbirds are drawn to
Hummingbird food
We make our own
Our simple hummingbird drink recipe is made up of three basic ingredients: sugar, water and red food coloring (optional).
1. 1 1/2 cups Sugar
2. 1 Quart of cool water
3. Few drops of red food coloring (optional)
Combine ingredients and stir till sugar is dissolved. We usually mix up one quart at a time and if we have any left we keep refrigerated till we need it. Before refilling our feeders we let the refrigerated portion set till it reaches room temperature.
*You can find packets of Hummingbird drinks at Walmart stores, etc.

- They are so cute. I don't think I have seen one in "real life" in my garden.
