Everything About The Humvee

I'm a huge fan of the Humvee. When I talk about the Humvee I am talking about the High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle HMMWV (Humvee®)... and also the civilian version of the vehicle called the HUMMER.

We'll focus on the Humvee, but also touch on the Hummer.

Just quickly, so you know...

"The High Mobility Multi-purpose Wheeled Vehicle has been the mainstay truck of the U.S. military since 1985. (The Humvee) has proved itself as the most versatile, dependable and mobile tactical wheeled vehicle in the world. More than 65 combat and combat support systems have been fielded on HMMWVs. AM General has produced more than 185,000 HMMWVs for the U.S. and more than 50 friendly international forces."

My attraction to both the Humvee and the Hummer is to do with the strong design, the overall look and feel, and other things that I probably don't know yet. :)

But I do know I love the way it looks.

The M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, pronounced "Humvee", also dubbed "Hummer") is the most commonly deployed tactical vehicle used by the Armed forces of the USA and its allies. The original vehicle offers excellent road and cross-country mobility. It was designed in a variety of configurations; primarily for utility, logistical and scout missions. Where active combat role was considered, the Humvee was selected for its excellent cross country and road, air and helicopter mobility and load capacity. It was never intended to perform as armored combat vehicles.

Quick Humvee Overview

What is it and why is it so good?

The M998 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV or Humvee) is a military 4WD motor vehicle created by AM General.

Humvees were originally also referred to as Hummers, though that term was later reserved for a civilian SUV based on the Humvee.

There are at least 17 variants of the HMMWV in service with the United States armed forces. HMMWV serve as cargo/troop carriers, automatic weapons platforms, ambulances, M220 TOW missile carriers, M119 howitzer prime movers, M-1097 Avenger Pedestal Mounted Stinger platforms, MRQ-12 direct air support vehicles, S250 shelter carriers, and other things.

This is just some brief info I got from Wikipedia. There's a Wikipedia Humvee link on this page below.

We'll get into both the military and civilian use Humvees on this page.

Humvee Wikipedia Page

This page is rich with Humvee information

Hummer is a brand of off-road vehicles sold by Motors Liquidation Company (aka the old GM). The original Hummer H1 was based on the military High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle (HMMWV, or Humvee). However, the Hummer H2 and the Hummer H3 were based on other, smaller civilian-market vehicles.

Chinese automaker Sichuan Tengzhong Heavy Industrial Machinery Company announced in 2009 that it will acquire the Hummer brand pending government approvals.

Alternative Fuels & Hybrid Humvees

News articles that may be of interest

Ethanol: Fuel of the future?
A short description from the first paragraph...

If you are like most Americans, you're nothing like Don Brown. Brown, a retired truck driver, not only knows that E85 is a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline, he loves it.

"I'm the E85 man," he said when a KARE11 crew approached him and asked why his car - and clothes - were covered in stickers and patches promoting the much-hyped fuel.

We asked him why he believes so strongly in E85. "Because this is the United States of America, (and) we got to take care of our country first," Brown said.

But most Americans are not putting ethanol in their tanks. Ethanol, which simply is grain alcohol you could drink - if it weren't mixed with other chemicals - accounts for just 3.5 percent of all the fuel we use, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Read more by clicking the above link.
Hybrid Could Fill Humvee's Boots
For a transport vehicle to be all it can be, the Army says it needs to run far on a tank of gas and provide portable power. To meet this goal, the military is developing a hybrid Humvee alternative that could boost the market for combination combustion-electric vehicles.

During last week's Society of Automotive Engineers' 2005 World Congress, the Army's Tank-Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center demonstrated a hybrid vehicle chassis that can be fitted with multiple bodies to replace Humvees, Jeeps, armored vehicles and pickup trucks... Airborne Combat Engineer: The M1117 Guardian ASV: Alternative to the Humvee?
The M1117 Guardian ASV: Alternative to the Humvee?

There's already a better vehicle than the Humvee for patrols in Iraq. It's the Armored Security Vehicle (ASV), built by the Cadillac Gage division of Textron Systems.

The ASV, officially the M1117, is used by MPs in Iraq, mostly to lead convoys, as this SEP 04 AFJ article notes. As of last September, there were only about 60 in Iraq, even though it had already proven itself in Bosnia.

Weighing 15 tons (not that much more than the weight of an uparmored Humvee), the ASV is capable of roll on/roll off C-130 transport with minimal preparation.

With a crew size of only three, the ASV is an alternate to the Humvee for a convoy escort and patrol vehicle. It's not an APC in its original form, but a stretched version can carry 10.
Army Builds Foam and Woodchip Humvee
(From first paragraph):

Next week, the US Army will begin testing a new Humvee that has a body and frame made completely from composite materials, Fiberglass, balsa wood, foam and carbon reinforcements. Conventionally, the Army has battled with how to protect Humvees from mines because ironically, adding more armor to the vehicles just weighs them down (and bring them closer to the mines)...

Humvee And Hummer Images

From civilian roads to military situations

HUMMER® H1 & H2

Due in part to the military HMMWV renown in Desert Storm, AM General introduced a civilian version of the vehicle called the HUMMER in 1992. Known as the world's most serious 4x4, the revolutionary vehicle has found favor with commercial users who appreciate the value of HUMMER's long life and amazing performance, and individuals who seek the ultimate in toughness and mobility.

In 1999, General Motors acquired the HUMMER brand worldwide and rebadged the current vehicle H1. In 2002, AM General began assembling the HUMMER H2 for GM in its new factory in Mishawaka, Ind. This vehicle was designed by and is marketed by General Motors. Although GM acquired the HUMMER brand, they do not own any part of AM General. For specific HUMMER product information visit Hummer.com.

HMMWV (Humvee®)

Wherever you see American troops around the world, you see HMMWVs (Humvees) in action. Even around the U.S., in natural disasters such as floods, hurricanes and tornadoes, you'll see HMMWVs when the National Guard is at work.

Although the HMMWV has been in production since 1985, its design is still as revolutionary today as it was when engineers began initial concepts in 1979. The final design met military requirements to replace numerous types of aged vehicles and keep up with swift moving tanks. The Army wanted durability, mobility, and reliability. The unique geometry of the truck provides those qualities. No other light tactical vehicle in the world approaches the HMMWV's capabilities or cost effectiveness.

That doesn't mean today's HMMWVs are the same as those first produced. The HMMWV is a dynamic vehicle with changes and improvements continually added. For instance, thorough corrosion resistance has been added and most components have been upgraded, including the move to a larger 6.5-litre diesel engine. From day one, system developers have continually found new users for the flexible HMMWV.
