The "Hunchback" Posture- How to Correct this Area Of Your Upper Back That Sticks Out !
Ranked #54 in Healthy Living, #906 overall
Correcting the Hunchback Posture- A Posture that is more common than you think !
The "Hunchback" Posture is more common than you Think. This posture refers to the bone that protrudes in your upper back area. It is a sign of spinal alignment and poor neck posture. You can prevent it from happening and from ever starting in the first place. But first you have to be able to recognize it.
Hunchback posture can be the culprit of many symptoms such as
-neck pain
-headaches
-stiff neck
-stiffness and tightness in the upper shoulders
-pain between the shoulder blades
-upper back pain
You can prevent this posture from happening and from ever starting in the first place. But first you have to be able to recognize it. This Squidoo lens will give you more insight into the dreaded Hunchback Posture
The spine works together like a kinetic chain. What goes on at the top of the chain, affects what goes on as you go down the spine.
What leads to the "hunchback" posture form?
Recognizing what patterns lead up to the posture is very important.
This condition originates from poor neck and upper back posture. It is the occurence of your upper back starting to shifting up and back. So that "hunch" that we see as unpleasant, is actually bone.
This phenomenon happens because the neck spine shifts forward. They call this forward head posture or forward head carriage. It is also known as "military Neck" or "loss of cervical lordosis" or "loss of neck curve". There are many ways your Doctor may describe this posture.
Keep in mind that your spine works together like a kinetic chain. Just like a chain it works together, and when it does so the conditions are optimal. When one part of the spine is shifted or a "misaligment occurs", it creates problems elsewhere in the vertebrae chain. So as the neck spine shifts forward and looses it's normal alignment and curvature, the upper back spine starts pushing up and back increasing it's curve.
A Note on Forward Head Posture
For Every Inch of forward head posture, it can increase the weight of the head on the spine by an additional 10 lbs

How Can One Correct Bad Neck and Upperback Posture?
Is slight "hunching" of the upper back a cause for Concern?
Does it matter if you have a slight "hunching" of the upper back? To begin with, we all notice it. It does not look good and we feel that our bodies are out of alignment. Something doesn't seem right. You may not even notice it right away. Maybe someone else notices your posture or you go to try on a shirt and something doesn't look right.... Also, the problem may just get worse overtime. The hunchback posture may increase over time, especially if nothing is done to fix the posture.
Most importantly; if you have it, you know for a fact that your neck and upper back are out of alignment. This is extremely important because research show that any spinal misalignments eventually puts pressure on nerves. Any pressure on nerves means the body is not working at it's best. This not only sets you up for annoying things like neck pain, stiffness, back pain, and headaches, but can cause something even worse.
So how do you correct this "bone" that's popping out in the upper back? Answer - we simply need to correct the posture and spine alignment.
One way to address this neck posture issue to use an effective neck pillow and neck traction device at home.
What are we looking for in a good neck pillow? A good neck pillow is one that gives the proper neck support when you sleep. The Arc4life Cervical Linear Traction Neck Pillow supports your neck while improving alignment.
A true neck traction device will help bring the head and neck back and improve the neck curve even more quickly.
In fact using these two pain relief products in conjunction with each other will help achieve the proper neck posture. Many of our patients do neck traction during the day for 10-15 minutes at a time (3-4 times per week, or whatever their Dr has recommended), and use the Arc4life Neck pillow at night to maintain neck traction. Like I said, these two posture products work very well together.
Restoring the normal neck curvature and improving forward head posture will then restore upper back posture and alignment. The upper back spine that was protruding or "hunching" up and back will move back down and forward.
Not only will this neck pillow and neck traction devise correct that ugly "hunch back", it will prevent it from ever occurring to begin with!

Correcting Foward Head Posture

A lot of times with the hunchback posture as described above, one will also see forward head posture, or "forward head carriage- basically the head and neck protrude forward from the body. This forward head carriage can be fixed by 1) Doing head retraction exercises 2) Using a Neck Exerciser to bring the head back into the right position.
A hunchback posture is very a noticeable posture. Not only will you see it in the mirror, but your clothes will fit differently and show differently.
