The Hunt for Flowers

One of my family and my favorite things to do in the spring and summer is to go on trips to various gardens and photograph the flowers. Because of this interest, I decided to start a shop on CafePress, Flower Designs by Susan, devoted exclusively to floral designs. Naturally the number of photos I have taken has increased tremendously and I have gotten and continue to get inspiration for my flower designs from these photos. In this lens I would like to share my favorite gardens and some of the designs that were inspired by them.

Skyland in Spring

Beautiful Flowering Trees

Spring - We went to the NJ Botanical Gardens for the Lilac Weekend which is the first week in May. In addition to an entire field of lilac bushes in various colors, azaleas and dogwood were also in bloom as well as tulips, irises, wisteria, daffodils and some early peonies. Much to our surprise, we saw the first tiger swallowtail butterfly landing on an azalea bush and my son and I both ran down the hill to photograph it. Luckily we didn't trip and, of course, the important thing was that we got the shot.

Skyland in Summer

Fields of Flowers

Skyland in Summer
Summer: The Skyland Garden is totally different in summer. All the flowering shrubs and now just green leaves. In its place are all the summer flowers, petunias, roses, zinnias, canna, red and yellow torch flowers and water lilies. There are stone benches to sit on in various places where you can enjoy the flowers and open grassy areas where people like to picnic.

Longwood Gardens

Miles of Flowers

Longwood Gardens

Longwood Gardens: As most people who love botanical gardens know, Longwood Gardens is a very large garden in Pennsylvania. Not only does it have acres of outdoor exhibits which can hardly be gone through in one day, it also has a very large greenhouse which has my favorite, the orchid room. I still have not finished getting flower design ideas from my day at Longwood Gardens.

Don't Forget to Visit the Chinese Pavillion Also

Staten Island Garden
Staten Island Botanical Garden: This is a free garden which also includes a small greenhouse with a water lily pond in front of it. They also have a beautiful Chinese Pavilion which does have a fee.

Planting Fields

Gardens and Greenhouses

Planting Fields Garden
Planting Fields: We went in the autumn and didn't expect too many flowers to be growing but were surprised to find the dahlia garden still in bloom. They also have several greenhouses so the trip was a success.

Designs inspired by my visit to Planting Fields:

     Dahlia Kidds Climax   White Daisies

Cross Estates Gardens

Perfect for Bees and Butterflies

Cross Estate Gardens
Cross Estate Gardens: The Cross Estates Gardens is a native garden kept up by volunteers (who have done a fantastic job). The flowers are those that attract butterflies and bees. In fact, although it has been reported that bees have been less plentiful in gardens lately, there were many bees, sometimes several on one flower, in this garden. I also saw a fritillary butterfly for the first time in this garden. Although this garden is small, we still had a good time photographing the flowers.

Frelinghuysen Arboretum

Lovely Small Garden in New Jersey

Frelinghuysen Arboretum
Frelinghuysen Arboretum: I've been to the Frelinghuysen Arboretum several times. Usually I'm bored with arboretums because they concentrate primarily on different kinds of trees. However, the Frelinghuysen Arboretum has many flowers. I think of it as a miniature Longwood Gardens without the greenhouse.

Chanticleer Garden

Beautiful Little Garden in Pennsylvania

Chanticleer Garden
Chanticleer Garden: Chanticleer Gardens is a small garden in Pennsylvania. I almost didn't get to see it because my husband and I got stuck in a traffic jam and it was about 1 hour 15 minutes before closing. I photographed this garden almost at a dead run. My favorite part of this garden was the sunflowers because most gardens don't have sunflowers and I feel that sunflowers have a lot of personality. Also they have a lily pond with lotuses.
