Metal Dectecting as a Hobby

Metal Dectecting is fun for all ages. Growing up my father had an old detector that he kept in the closet. I used to take it out and hunt in the woods behind my childhood home. Now this dectector was ancient, I think that it was called the Lynx. It would only detect about 2 inches down, but it sure got me hooked. There was an old campsite back in those woods and I used to find old silver dimes and wheat head pennies. I still hunt today. With todays technology detectors have come a long way since then.

Types of Detectors

There are many different detectors, some are more complicated then others. The basic ones are easy to get used to, with less features and buttons. Turn it on and off you go! These detectors are also the most affordable. There are detectors made for coin shooting, hunting for nuggets, and underwater use. Today you can some really neat detectors. these can be found in all price ranges, and made for all levels of experience.

Some Beginner Detectors

Land or relic detectors are used mainly on land or in the woods, playgrounds, and parks. They can be used at the water edge and even in the water a couple of inches, most coils are waterproof, but don't drop your whole detector in the water, because it will be ruined. If you're just starting out in the hobby, here are the most popular and affordable beginner metal detectors. The Garrett Ace 250, Whites Prizm II, Minelab Musketeer, and the Bounty Hunter Tracker IV Of course there are many more models of detectors to choose from, but these will get you started on the right track. I use the Bounty Hunter as a back-up detector and it works great in the parks and also in coin hunting competitions.

Detectors for Hunting in Water

Ever wonder when you are at the beach or lake what kind of treasueres might underwater? If finding jewelry or trasure coins is your thing then a waterproof detector is a must. There are two basic categories of underwater detectors: A VLF - that can discriminate against iron and unwanted junk, and there is a PI - that can detect deeper then a VLF but you'll be digging every nail and bottle cap without knowing it. Here are a few examples - VLF: Minelab Excalibur 1000, Fisher CZ 20
PI: Whites Surf Master PI Pro, Headhunter Pulse
- Personally I have enjoyed using the Whites. That detector is good at finding items on the beach and in the water.
