Diving in Hurghada, Egypt

Update February 6th 2011: Political unrest which began at the end of January 2011 has made pleasure travel to Egypt prohibitive. Please carefully consider your travel plans before researching a scuba diving holiday in Hurghada.

Many divers know that scuba diving in the Red Sea is world-class. Hurghada, Egypt is a scuba diving resort town on the Red Sea with plenty of dive operators and dive locations to choose from. Along with Sharm El Sheikh, Hurghada is one of the most popular dive resort towns in Egypt. Plan ahead for your Hurghada diving adventure holiday and you will enjoy your scuba diving to the fullest. Travel Tips

Tips based on my own experience

You should be respectful of local customs any time you travel. Egypt is a predominantly Muslim country. Tourists, especially women, should dress modestly but be aware that most locals in Hurghada and other holiday destinations are used to seeing sun-seeking holidaymakers. If you venture outside of Hurghada itself, more modest dress should surely be considered.

Don't forget to pack sunscreen and a hat, your favorite anti-diarrhea medication and hand sanitizer or wet-wipes. Drink plenty of water during your holiday to avoid dehydration. Egypt is famous for a bright, hot sun!

Many shops in Egypt do not have fixed prices -- haggling is a normal method of doing business. In case you do not like to haggle, many souvenir shops in the Sekala area have fixed prices more often than the shops in New Hurghada area.

Of course, you could always buy your souvenirs online!

Dive Shops in Hurghada

So many to choose from!

The same rules apply in Hurghada as they would elsewhere. Find a shop you are comfortable with. When picking a dive operator, do some research on the internet and then contact your top choices by telephone or email. Ask questions, get details you could not find during your research, and tell them about your plans. Their response will help you to pick the best dive operator for your needs.

Colona is my personal favorite dive outfit in Hurghada. They cater to Scandinavian divers especially but the multinational staff were awesome according to this Dutch-American couple. We also used Colona in Sharm el Sheikh and can't recommend them enough.

Egypt & Hurghada Travel Books

Even if you are just planning a scuba-centric holiday in Hurghada, a guidebook is a good thing to bring along. You can find reviews of local restaurants and read about the excursions and local villages your guide or hotel concierge might encourage you to visit. You can also read up on local customs, food and practicalities. Most guidebooks also include some language tips, and learning basic greetings and shopping terms in the local language is always a good idea.
