Hurricane Hunters- Pursuit of Mother Nature's Eye of Fury

Hurricane Chasers

Image flying into the eye of a hurricane. It's bad enough when I fly and we hit some turbulence. If you have ever flown on an airplane, you understand the bumps and jolts you can experience. Now, imagine the rockin' and rollin' in the fury of a hurricane.

Hurricane Hunters fly into these tremendous storms to gather weather data to predict its course and strength.

We are still feeling the effects of Hurricane Katrina. New Orleans is still rebuilding.

Remember safety is a prime concern. Watch for weather alerts and be prepared.

Hurricane chasing is not for the faint of heart.
Be educated and decide if this is a hobby or a job for you.

Happy Flying,

Kelly and Curt Wissink

Air Force Reserve 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron "Hurricane Hunters"

Hurricane Hunters Association

Hurricane Hunters Association
It's true! We fly airplanes right into the eye of the hurricane. This is the place to see unique photos inside the hurricanes. The 53rd Weather Reconnaissance Squadron, known as the Hurricane Hunters of the Air Force Reserve, is one-of-a-kind: the only Department of Defense organization still flying into tropical storms and hurricanes--since 1944. Our ten Lockheed-Martin WC-130J aircraft and crews are part of the 403rd Wing, based at Keesler Air Force Base in Biloxi, Mississippi.
