Hurricanes

Florida and the gulf coast is in for another busy year with hurricanes and tropical storms. Oil prices are on the rise again with the threat of hurricane IKE heading to Texas. Hurricanes Katrina and Rita wrecked more than 100 offshore oil platforms and closed many large refineries for months in the region, which houses a quarter of US oil output and 15 per cent of natural gas output. But thankfully this was no Katrina.

Not a hurricane yet

Domincan Republic disturbance 93L

This disturbance is over the Domincan Republic and has moved away from Puerto Rico leaving a large mess to be cleaned up. Reports of 24 inches of rain fell over Puerto Rico in a 24 hour period.

Storm models are still showing that this could turn into a hurricane cat 1 or 2, we will have to wait and see what develops since this storm does not want to move.

The Latest on Hurricane Ike

As of 09/12/2008 05:00 CDT, water levels are rising along the Gulf Coast from Mississippi to southern Texas and range from 2.5 to 6.5 feet above predicted. The highest water levels are being recorded at Shell Beach, LA. Water levels along the eastern Gulf Coast are elevated 1.5 to 2.5 feet above predicted. Barometric pressure is falling along the Louisiana and Texas coasts. Winds are increasing across Mississippi and Louisiana with winds at Pilots Station East, SW Pass, LA recording frequent gusts over 50 knots.

Gas Prices on the rise around the country

Gas prices are on the rise, here in Florida we are starting to see gas at $4.00 to $4.50 a gallon and hurricane Ike has not hit land yet. I have heard gas in some states is reaching $5.00 a gallon with long lines at the stations. In our small town we are starting to see gas stations running out of gas already.

From Fox Business News:

Gasoline prices jumped at the wholesale level Friday as Hurricane Ike swept through Gulf of Mexico, prompting companies along the Texas coast to shut down refining and drilling operations.

Crude oil on the futures market, however, briefly sank below the psychologically important $100-a-barrel mark for the first time since April 2 -- showing that investors believe a worsening global economy will continue to drive down demand for some time in the United States and elsewhere.

The fact that U.S. fuel demand is so weak right now might mean the recent surge in the wholesale price of gasoline -- which rose to about $4.85 a gallon in the Gulf Coast market Friday -- might not be passed along to consumers unless Ike's impact is severe and long-lasting.

"Major oil companies are sensitive to raising prices in this environment," said Ben Brockwell, director of data pricing and information services at the Oil Price Information Service.

So where is IKE going to go

According to the "Weather Channel"

Extremely dangerous Category 3 Hurricane Ike with 120-mph sustained winds is moving into the northern coast of eastern Cuba.

As of 8 p.m. EDT, Ike was located about 60 miles N of Guantanamo, Cuba, and moving west at 14 mph.

Destructive Ike has moved away from the Turks and Caicos Islands and the southernmost Bahamas after a direct hit on Great Inagua Island.

At the present time it looks Florida may be out of the woods. We will have to wait and see if the weather gods show favor on us.

Hurricane Gustav Roars Over Haiti

Raw Video: Hurricane Gustav Roars Over Haiti

Forecasters say Hurricane Gustav has made landfall on Haiti's southwest peninsula. The fast-forming storm is sending global oil prices soaring on fears it could become 'extremely dangerous' as it approaches the Gulf of Mexico. (Aug. 26)

The future for 2008 storm season

Although the season has seen some strong activity already this year, the season is far from over. From what the forecasters are saying we have several other storms on the horizon in the Atlantic and they seem to have there eye set on Florida. Florida got lucky with Gustav and is in the healing stage from Fay and now we wait to see what Hanna does. Right behind Hanna is Ike starting to twist and spin farther out in the Atlantic. Off the coast of Africa there is some other storms starting to brew. So I guess the forecasters are correct it is going to be a very busy active storm season.
