Low self esteem is basically caused by the negative thoughts that we have about ourselves. In order to overcome low self esteem, we must change these negative thoughts to positive thoughts. This can be done by changing the way we talk to ourselves. You must stop all of the negative self talk immediately, it is damaging your self esteem. Replacing your negative self talk with positive self talk such as affirmations will quickly boost your self esteem.
When you find yourself thinking something negative about yourself (such as - I'm so stupid or I'm so fat), replace it with a positive affirmation (such as - I have such a great life or I'm so happy, everyone loves me). Sit down and figure out a few positive affirmations that would make you feel better and improve your self esteem. Repeat them to yourself often during the day. - I enjoyed reading this page. I agree, hurtful words can become internalized and thus impact our self-esteem. Self-acceptance is a big part of self-esteem, though our behavior in other areas can also impact it. I've found Branden's Six Pillars of Self-Esteem very helpful; have you read it?
