How We Took On An Orphaned Husky-Mix

A few months ago, I would have said "no way" to any kind of dog. This dog was different! She was a husky-mix (with malamute). She was an orphan dog. Her owner had passed away, leaving the dog with no home. Of course, we took her in! Her name is Lady! Good name for a good dog. She has this beautiful, thick coat of hair. White underneath, with mixed colors of brown and black on her back and top of her head. Lady has these incredible golden eyes, which turn fire red when she's excited. From a few months ago, until now, she has come a long way. When she first came to live with us, she wasn't eating, playing or showing any kind of enthusiasm. Now, all she wants to do is play, eat, lounge around, and demand every bit of our attention. Which we give to her openheartedly. My husband and I have had a lot to learn about this breed of dog. We take it one day at a time, learning as we go. We were told "Lady" was a husky-mix. Her veterinarian told us she was mixed with malamute. I'd say she's mostly malamute.

Temperament For Husky Mixed With Malamute

type=textThis breed of dog loves people. You can pet them for hours and they still want more. They love all the attention, but can be quite demanding at times. They are fairly quiet dogs, seldom bark, but when they do bark it sounds more like a wolf. This only seems to happen when they are excited or feel they have something to say to you. They make this woo woo woo sound. After dusk, and early in the morning seems to be their frisky time. They tend to tolerate smaller animals, if brought up around them. Although, I wouldn't recommend having a cat. Smaller animals seem to bring out their natural instincts. This breed is not aggressive, if trained properly. Actually, their feelings get hurt quite easily. They try so hard to please you. These dogs are very playful in nature. It's better to give them a lot of exercise. It will keep their playfullness down to a minimum. We keep our husky-mix busy outdoors, so when she comes indoors, she is extremely calm and tired out.

Ideal Weight For A Husky Malamute

type=textThe ideal weight for a female is 75 to 85 pounds. The ideal weight for a male averages 85 to 95 pounds. It's often hard to tell if your husky-mix is overweight. Their fur coat is so thick, sometimes it looks like they are heavier than what they actually are. Try wrapping your arms around him or her. If you cannot feel their ribcage, then chances are they are overweight. Food lying around, not a good idea. These dogs have appetites out of this world. They love all kinds of food. It's very easy for this breed to become overweight, especially if your pet isn't getting enough exercise. Adequate exercise will keep your pet fit and healthy. Don't expect this breed to be very fast. Malamutes were built for endurance rather than speed.

Frontline Plus for Dogs

This is the only flea and tick protection I will use. I've tried other flea and tick products. Frontline is the only product I trust. I give the dog treatment to my husky mix and the cat treatment to my 12 year old cat. It completely breaks the flea life cycle and controls new infestations for up to 3 months. I use it once a month as recommended. It's so easy to use. Just apply to dogs or puppies 8 weeks or older. It comes in a small applicator. You just break the tip off the applicator and apply directly to the skin, through the hair. Make sure you apply between the shoulder blades. Only one application needed. It's that simple. Follow directions as instructed on box. Please use according to weight and age of your pet.

When To Groom?

You should groom your pet at least every couple weeks. A thorough brushing, at least every other day, will cut down on the hair all over your floor. Trimming nails and fur between toes should be part of the grooming routine. Overgrown nails can become curved under and cause your pet pain to walk on. Do not clip into the pink. It's very painful for your pet, and will bleed profusely. If you can't do the grooming yourself, or do not have the time, take your pet to a groomer. If you take your pet to the groomer, try to be consistent. Pets who go to the groomer on a regular basis, behave better.

For Dogs That Won't Eat

When we took"Lady" in she wasn't eating. We bought all kinds of different dry dog food. We tried mixing dry and wet together. Nothing seemed to work. Our vet told us not to worry, that she could go days without eating. We worried anyways. After a week and a half, (8 dog food bags later) we tried something out of desperation. We took a half pouch(they come in little pouches) of chewy, moist dog food and mixed it with a half can of wet dog food. Then we would sprinkle a few cube size ham pieces(98% fat free) on her food. We did this twice a day. No more eating problems. We're happy and our dog's happy. Once your pet is eating normally, slowly switch he or she back to their regular pet food.

Non-Aggressive

Our husky-mix is very protective in a non-aggressive way. I'm gonna tell you about a couple instances that happened recently. My husband and I were outside playing around with "Lady" when another dog came into the yard. The dog was about the same size as "Lady". Lady just went up to the dog and sniffed her, then came right back to us. She didn't bark at the strange dog. She just sat down in front of my husband and I and watched. She never took her eyes off the dog once. We have an enclosed back deck attached to the back of our house. Lady loves to lounge out there and get fresh air. I was on the deck with her that day. Sure enough, here comes that same dog. The dog comes up to the deck and starts barking at me. Lady calmly walked to the edge of the deck, stuck her face through the sides and snipped the dog on the nose. Lady was protecting me and giving the strange dog a warning. I would call that protective, not aggressive.

Adorable! Pets like Lady make me hate my extreme allergies to almost all house pets... I'd love to have a husky mix if it wouldn't kill me.
