Why Use HVLP?
Excerpt from Wood Magazine
"If you've never tried your hand atspray finishing, it's never been easier,
cleaner, or safer, thanks to high volume,
low-pressure (HVLP) sprayers.
Why spray? You complete more work in
less time; benefit from fast-drying finishes
that are far less susceptible to nibs from
settling dust, such as water-base, lacquer,
and shellac; and consistently produce smooth results. And, as your spraying skills improve, you can use techniques like toning and shading (adding color between finish coats)that bring depth and sophistication to your finishes.
You could get those results using a conventional spray gun powered by an air compressor. But
they operate at high pressure and create a
hazardous fog of overspray. As much as 80 percent of the finish that leaves a conventional
spray gun bounces back off your workpiece, and winds up on every exposed surface, including
the shop floor, walls, shelves, and tools.
HVLP sprayers, on the other hand, use a large volume of air at low pressure to break up, or atomize, the stream of finish leaving the nozzle into a fine mist. This method greatly reduces finish bounce-back, saving you both money and time cleaning up.
To earn the HVLP designation, a spray gun must transfer at least 65 percent of the finish to the surface, but transfer rates upward of 80 percent are possible."

3M's New Paint Paint Preparation System - How To Save Time, Money, Yourself, & the Planet
Already an HVLP spray gun user? Need some extra time and extra cash? Want to find ways to stay healthier? Looking to go green? Here's a simple way to save time, save money, be healthier, and do your part in saving the planet - try 3M's fresh approach to paint preparation. For those of you who prefer to apply your finishes by spraying, the new 3M Paint Preparation System (PPS) works with your current HVLP spray equipment. You simply replace your current cup with the PPS cup and disposable liners using an adaptor (over 20 different spray gun adaptors are available for converting all major spray guns), and you are ready to spray. You save on finish material, reduce clean up time and eliminate the need for solvents to clean your cup. When the job is all done, only the gun and adapter need to be cleaned. Using this faster, cleaner system can boost operator efficiency by up to 15%.
What's the bottom line?
* Save time with only one cup for mixing and spraying and with disposable liners and filters.
* Save money with up to 70% reduction in cleaning solvent use.
* Save yourself & the environment with less exposure to harmful solvents and volatile organic compounds.
Plus because the liner bag is collapsible, your spray gun performs at any angle making your job even easier and your results even more professional.
PPS Continued
Jenni Durr of General Finishes has this to say about 3M's new system, "PPS has put hours back into my days. We use multiple colors all day long, and with PPS, I can just leave a color right in the cup, and use it again later in the day, using the same material and no clean up! What a difference!"3M is always thorough, and they've provided several accessories to further streamline the process. Dispensers for lids and liners not only keep your work space neat and tidy but also prevent outside contamination. Mylar mix ratio liner inserts allow easy measuring. Sealing caps for the liner bags allow you to pre-mix various basecoat colors and clearcoats prior to entering the spray booth and to retain unused paint when the job is done. A special squeeze bottle filled with solvent or water ensures quick cleaning between different types of finishes allowing the operator to switch without leaving the booth. Cartridge strainers are built right into the system and strain the paint for any large particles. Carrier systems are also available if you happen to take your show on the road, painting at several locations.
Recently, 3M teamed up with Accuspray Application Technologies Inc., well-known manufacturer of a variety of spray paint equipment for architectural, automotive, industrial and woodworking applications. Accuspray contributes pressurized cup guns and turbine systems to 3M's paint preparation system, so that 3M can provide a comprehensive system to customers.

History of HVLP Spray Guns
Over 50 years ago, vacuum cleaners, such as Kirby or Electrolux brands, usually came with several accessories. One of those accessories was often a small plastic spraygun with an attached jar for paint and a hose that could be attached to the vaccum 'blower'.As long as the paint was thinned appropriately, it worked like a charm, and simple HVLP was born, proving that high pressure was unnecessary to spray paint.
Low pressure was just as effective PLUS the lower velocity of the air resulted in less overspray which resulted in less wasted paint.
The first manufacturers of professional HVLP spray guns were Sicmo (Monaco) and Apollo (England).
