Learning to set up your first Hydroponics Grow Systems and which one is best for your situation
If you decide to use second hand supplies you will want to be certain that the container did not contain any hazardous chemicals previously. Used food containers are your best choices.
Your nutrient solutions should never come in contact with any type of metal other than stainless steel. Nutrient solutions used in Hydroponics are excellent conductors of electricity, any electrical devices such as pumps that are placed inside the nutrient solution should be rated for salt water use.
Hydroponics Grow Systems for Beginners
If you have never tried to grow anything using hydroponics grow systems, I highly recommend that you start with either a wick system or a bubble bucket. These two hydroponic systems are the easiest to build and the easiest to maintain for the person who is getting started into the exciting world of hydroponics.Lets talk a little bit about each system and the pros and cons of each, starting with the wick system. If you take a trip to your local Home Supply store and look in the home and garden department more than likely you can find a wick system already put together for you labeled as a self watering planter.
In the spirit of Doing it Yourself we will learn how to build a wick system ourselves, so lets collect the items that we will need.
First off we will need some type of material for our wicks. Cotton rope is the easiest and cheapest to come by, but we will run into the problem of rot, so it is recommended that you get some nylon rope instead.
Hydroponics grow systems Nutrient Solution
The next step after collecting our wick in our hydroponics grow systems is to mix up a container that will be used for our reservoir of nutrient solution. Many people will think that you need to go out and buy specially made hydroponic solutions, but actually you can make your own using ingredients found at your local home and garden store.Beginner Hydroponic Nutrient Solution
1 gallon (3.7 liters) of water
1 tablespoon of Miracle Gro
1 tablespoon of Epsom Salts
Mix all of your ingredients together for a home brewed hydroponic solution that works like a charm.
Hydroponics Grow Systems Building a Wick System
The next step in our hydroponics grow systems is to cut a hole in the lid of your reservoir and thread the wicks through so that they hang down in the solution and about 12 inches comes out the top of the container. We will then take our planting containers and cut holes in the bottom so that our wick can fit through and lay in the bottom. If you are using a large planter it is good to have several wicks spread out along the bottom to get maximum coverage. Our planter will sit on top of the reservoir and our plants will use the nutrients that are sucked up through the wick from the nutrient solution.
Hydroponics Grow Systems Final Step
The final step in our hydroponics grow systems will call for about an inch of vermiculite in the bottom of the planter to provide maximum absorbability, and then we will fill the rest of the container with a 50/50 vermiculite/perlite mixture.Moisten your planting mixture and then introduce your seeds or plants and set your planters in the sun. This is a simple passive system with little maintenance, all you have to watch is to make sure that your reservoir stays supplied with nutrient solution. This type of hydroponic system couldn't be any easier.
