There are four species of hyenas: the spotted, striped and brown hyenas and the aardwolf.
Spotted hyenas (Crocuta crocuta) are social carnivores that live in groups called clans. Each clan is composed of multiple matrilines of adult females and their offspring, as well as one or more adult immigrant males. source:MSU

Members of the hyena family, aardwolves are more closely related to civets, mongooses and meerkats than dogs or wolves

Male and female hyenas look alike
Males are slightly larger in the striped and brown species
Females are larger in the spotted species
The striped hyena's coat color varies from gray to light brown with vertical black stripes along the length of the body and dark, striped legs
Along their backs are darker, erectile crests
Coat hair is long, and develops a woolly undercoat in colder climates
Their heads and bodies reach 3 to 4 feet in length; tails are about 12.5 inches; and they weigh from 55 to 121 pounds
Striped hyenas may have longevity of up to 24 years in captivity

Brown Hyena
Brown hyenas are smaller than spotted hyenas, have pointed ears and very different coats and coloring.
Brown hyenas can live in much drier areas than spotted hyenas, such as Deception Valley in the Kalahari desert.
Brown hyenas mostly scavenge large animal carcasses instead of hunting, but also eat a lot of fruit, even melons.
