How to Surge and Coast your way to better gas mileage.
Since I bought my Toyota Prius a couple of months back, my new hobby has trying to maximize my gas mileage. Using the Pulse and Glide method I've been able to typically get over the EPA MPG estimates for highway driving of 51 miles per gallon. I drive 40 miles round trip to work everyday on the highways of St. Louis and I've been able to get consistently over 53 MPG. That doesn't sound like much above the EPA estimates, but if you know anything about them then you will know that the tests the EPA uses do not represent the driving conditions of typical American. The EPA has recognized this deficiency in their tests and has changed their techniques. The new highway rating for the Prius starting in 2008 will be only 45 MPG. I have been able to max out my MPG at around 65 MPG for my trip to work, but I really don't have the patience to stick to the full method.
Now I won't go and restate all the techniques I have used to improve my gas mileage, but I will present some links below for where I found the pulse and glide techniques. I also have some links to some hybrid products that I designed if you would like to show your love of hybrid cars.

- Pulse and Glide with Warp Stealth
- This is the article that first taught me how to Pulse and Glide. It helped me go from getting MPG in the mid 40's to the low to mid 50's on a consistent basis. If I had other road options besides the highway I know I could easily get to the 60's.

Good lens you have. I'm curious to know which hypermiling techniques you used - only pulse and glide? That one always seemed a bit too risky.

I've been reading a little about hypermiling on the web and some aspects of it are controversial. Some people resent being behind someone who is unexpectedly slowing down and then speeding down hills. Filling up the tank during cooler night hours does make sense though.
