Hyperpigmentation Treatment
Hyperpigmentation is a red or brown spot left on the skin after a skin lesion has healed.
An excess of melanin, the brown pigment that produces normal skin color, forms deposits in the skin.As the body ages, melanocyte distribution becomes less diffuse and its regulation less controlled by the body. Ultra Violet light stimulates melanocyte activity, and where concentrations of the cells are denser than surrounding areas, the result is hyper pigmentation.
Is the red spot a scar? No! It's simply a post-inflammatory change of the skin.
Only if you can see a color change or skin defect that is present after 1 year, you have a real acne scar.
To prevent dark marks on your skin always apply a sunscreen.
Hydroquinone is often prescribed to treat hyperpigmentation. It is a chemical lightener used in many topical skin products to lighten discoloration, age spots, freckles and melasma. Hydroquinone works by blocking the tyrosinase enzyme which is important in the making of melanin. It is still available in the USA in 2% concentrations for OTC products and in 4% concentrations in prescription products.
Onother method used to treat hyperpigmentation is the shedding of the top layers of the skin's surface through exfoliation (microdermabrasion); there are a range of exfoliation methods, such as glycolic acid, malic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid, microdermabrasion, peeling masks.
These methods increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun, so you must wear sunscreen every day while treating hyperpigmentation.
Before choosing one of these treatments, I suggest you to consult you doctor and understand all the pros & cons in detail.
Retin-A, organic kojic acid and licorice extract have shown some results against dark spots on the skin.
A study found that kojic acid and glycolic acid in combination was reported to have the same efficacy in treating hyperpigmentation and melasma as hydroquinone and glycolic acid in combination.
Licorice extract is also used to treat hyperpigmentation.
