The Thyroid is a gland located beneath the voice box (larynx) that produces thyroid hormone. The thyroid helps regulate growth and metabolism.
Overactivity of the thyroid gland may be caused by a functioning growth or tumor, such as a benign nodule or cancer, a self-limited inflammation of the gland from a probable viral infection, or Graves' disease (the most common form).
