What Is A Hypnosis Induction?

A hypnotic induction is the first thing that happens when a hypnosis session starts.

Hypnosis is essentially a state of enhanced day dreaming. Your are normally aware of the voice of the hypnotist but my not be aware of much, if anything, else. A hypnotic experience will vary from session to session and also from hypnotist to hypnotist.

There are many different ways of inducing a hypnotic state.

The movie version is to swing a watch or pendulum in front of the hypnotic subject and ask them to watch it as they fall asleep. This can work. Indeed it will work very well if the expectation of your subject is that it is the "correct" way to become hypnotized.

Most hypnosis tracks will start with some kind of hypnotic induction. The video below explains this in more detail but most time the steps to a hypnosis induction are:

Get your subject to sit down somewhere comfortable
Start to relax them, usually by taking a few deep breaths
If they haven't already closed their eyes, get them to do so. Now
Maybe induce a state of mild confusion by getting them to count backwards in their head whilst the main hypnosis induction continues
Increase the state of relaxation by getting them to visualize a relaxing place. This could be a garden, a forest clearing, a beach or somewhere you know your subject finds peaceful and tranquil
Make this relaxing place vivid by exploring it with most or all the senses: touch, smell, sight at least
Create a way of deepening the hypnotic trance, usually by counting down from 1 to 10
This deepening is often accompanied by getting your subject to take steps down a set of stairs that you've introduced to the visualization
That's usually enough to induce a state of deep hypnotic trance but if your subject has been hypnotized before you may ask them to go even deeper - a direct command to go twice as deep often works well

That's the basis for most traditional hypnosis induction scripts. You can use it when you hypnotize other people or record a session to hypnotize yourself. Experiment to see what works best for you.
