Hypnosis: Can It Help You?

By Jennifer Connor

Are you looking for a way to effectively change the way you feel about certain things in your life? Hypnotherapy may be able to help. Through the use of hypnosis you can create more self-confidence and improved feelings of self-worth. Hypnosis is also effective in helping people conquer their fears such as public speaking, phobias such as fear of flying, or to finally break habits such as smoking.

Some of the more common areas people use of hypnosis to help in include:

Public Speaking: Overcoming the anxiety and fear

The thought of speaking in public is frightening to many people. The anxiety and fear that comes with needing to give a presentation or speech can be very hard to cope with for some. People can experience a dry mouth, blushing and sweating on the physical side, while on the mental side they may feel at a loss for words or even desperate to escape the situation. Hypnotherapy can help lessen the anxiety and fear you experience before the next time you need to speak in public.

Depression and Low Self-Esteem

Having low self-esteem and feeling low in self-worth can cause people to fall into depressions. Hypnosis can help to create a more positive feeling of self-worth and raise a person's self-esteem. It can also help in overcoming past hurts so a person can move on toward a brighter future.

Panic Attacks

Panic attacks are definitely real and for many people they make them feel as if they are losing control of themselves in normal everyday situations. Panic attacks are often accompanied by physical symptoms such as nausea, sweating intensely and even fainting. For those that suffer from panic attacks hypnotherapy may be able to help by calming their nerves and getting to the cause of the problem.

Phobias and Fears

One of the most common reason people seek out hypnotherapy is to reduce the effects of their fears and phobias. Some of the most common phobias people use hypnosis to overcome are fear of flying and fear of riding in a subway. Hypnotherapy can also help people deal with trauma and post traumatic stress, including flashbacks.

These are by no means the only uses of hypnosis and hypnotherapy. It can be effectively used to treat many addictions as well such as smoking and gambling. The best way to know if hypnosis can help you is to talk to a qualified hypnotherapist.

The Power of the Subconscious Mind...

By Jennifer Connor

Ask a group of a hundred people about self-hypnosis and you are likely to get a hundred different responses. Some will have experience with it and know it works, others will chalk the whole idea up to gimmicks of bad stage magicians. The truth of the matter lies somewhere in all the different answers you get. One of the reasons for all the different answers is that people react differently to self-hypnosis. One thing is certain though, for those who know how to do it, it is the key to unlocking the power of the subconscious mind.

Self-hypnosis can help with a whole list of different troubles people have in their everyday lives. Things like low self-esteem, low self-confidence, breaking of bad habits like smoking and nail biting, even to changing apects of a person's personality are all within the possibilities that can happen with self-hypnosis.

The subconscious part of our minds is much more powerful than most people realize. Self-hypnosis is nothing more than the awakening and strengthening of the subconscious mind and allowing it to do what it does best, handle the day to day routines in our lives. Driving a car for most people has become part of their subconscious mind, but it was not there in the beginning. When learning to drive, most people are nervous wrecks while trying to master gas pedals, brake pedals, negotiating turns and remembering to signal. Add in a clutch and the nerves just skyrocketed. But, with practice, driving becomes routine and we can do it basically on "auto-pilot" without much more conscious thought than where we want to go. This is because the mechanics of driving have entered our subconscious minds through repitition. Self-hypnosis allows you to enter other things, at will, into your subconscious mind the same way, through repitition.

Just as driving is a skill that needs to be learned and practiced to get good at, so is self-hypnosis. There are techniques that need to be learned, and the more you practice them the more effective your efforts will become. Self-hypnosis is the means of letting your conscious and subconscious minds communicate with each other on demand. Your subconscious mind can only be reached when you are relaxed and the conscious mind takes a back seat. Once it is awakened, you can then bring the powers of our subconsious mind to bear on whatever task we want.

Through self-hypnosis, people have been able to successfully kick bad habits, become a more assertive and confident person, instill a positive self image, and boost their performance on tests or in sports. All of this is possible by letting the subconscious mind work on the suggestions it is given during self-hypnosis sessions. It is thought that the average person only utilizes about ten percent of the power in the subconscious mind. Self-hypnosis allows people to unlock and use the remaining ninety percent to improve their lives.

What is hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a mental state (state theory) or set of attitudes (non-state theory) usually induced by a procedure known as a hypnotic induction, which is commonly composed of a series of preliminary instructions and suggestions."New Definition: Hypnosis" Division 30 of the American Psychological Association [http://www.apa.org/divisions/div30/define_hypnosis.html] Hypnotic suggestions may be delivered by a hypnotist in the presence of the subject, or may be self-administered ("self-suggestion" or "autosuggestion"). The use of hypnotism for therapeutic purposes is referred to as "hypnotherapy".

The words 'hypnosis' and 'hypnotism' both derive from the term "neuro-hypnotism" (nervous sleep) coined by the Scottish physician and surgeon James Braid around 1841. Braid based his practice on that developed by Franz Anton Mesmer and his followers ("Mesmerism" or "animal magnetism"), but differed in his theory as to how the procedure worked.

Although a popular misconception is that hypnosis is a form of unconsciousness resembling sleep, contemporary research suggests that it is actually a wakeful state of focused attention"Information for the Public. American Society of Clinical Hypnosis." and heightened suggestibility,Lyda, Alex. "Hypnosis Gaining Ground in Medicine." Columbia News with diminished peripheral awareness.p. 22, Spiegel, Herbert and Spiegel, David. Trance and Treatment. Basic Books Inc., New York. 1978. ISBN 0-465-08687-X In the first book on the subject, Neurypnology (1843), Braid described "hypnotism" as a state of physical relaxation accompanied and induced by mental concentration ("abstraction").Braid, J. (1843) Neurypnology.

Learning Techniques for Self-Hypnosis

By Jennifer Connor

While most people would associate hypnosis with a client sitting comfortably in a hypnotherapist's office, there are many techniques that can be learned and applied to yourself through self-hypnosis. Through these techniques it is possible for you to gain complete control of your mind, including the subconscious. In this article, we will cover the core techniques which you can alter and adjust to fit your own needs. Many of them are very similar to the ones used by hypnotherapists on clients. It should be noted that care should be taken when deciding what you want to have programmed into your subconscious mind.

The first thing to do is to decide what the desired result, or purpose, of your hypnosis session will be. You should not attempt to change more than one thing during a session since it simply will not work. Once you have decided on your purpose, it is time to devise the statement or suggestion you are going to give to your subconscious mind.

The suggestions you give your subconscious during self-hypnosis need a great deal of thought. They need to be positive, and represent a positive change or something good. Using negative suggestions such as "I am going to fly across country no matter how scared I am." will only serve to increase your fear of flying rather than overcoming it. Instead, focus on the positives involved in flying and how you will feel when you get to your destination and are greeted by your loved ones. The suggestions you devise should be short and to the point, and easily remembered.

When you are ready to do a self-hypnosis session, do so in a quiet, peaceful, and comfortable place. Locking the doors and unplugging the phone will help to make sure you are not disturbed. You may either sit or lay down, as long as your body is comfortable and able to relax along with your mind.

Focus all your attention on a point that is slightly above eye level. Take a couple deep breaths while repeating to yourself the word "relax". As you breathe out, imagine that you are expelling all the bad air inside you and replacing it with nice clean air as you breathe in.

Close your eyes and focus your mind in on a few of the sounds around you like water in the pipes, wind blowing through leaves outside, or rain hitting the windows. At the same time, be aware of your physical body and what you feel such as the temperature of you skin, or the weight of your body against the chair or bed.

Once you are relaxed, start to descend into your subconscious mind. You can imagine you are walking down a short stairway leading to a beautiful garden or any other place that brings you pleasure. Each step you take brings you closer to your goal, like passing through layers of clouds, and all your worries gradually leave. At the bottom step, you are in your garden and can feel the sun on the top of your foot and the grass between your toes.

You should now be completely relaxed in both body and mind. Start the repetition of your suggestions quietly to your self and your subconscious mind. Repeat the suggestion three times, with a short break in between to imagine how your life will be once the change is made. Once you are finished with your suggestion, climb back up the stairway slowly, telling your self that at the top step you will be fully awake and refreshed.

That is all there is to self-hypnosis. The ability to hypnotise yourself is a skill that can be learned by nearly everyone. However, practice does make it easier to accomplish. You may not feel the effects of it immediately, but just do it again and have faith that over time by giving your subconscious mind the right suggestions you will make the changes in your life that you want to make.

Using Hypnosis to Enhance Concentration and Memory

By Jennifer Connor

With our busy lifestyles and hectic schedules it is no wonder that people around the world complain about having poor memories or wish their concentration was better. There are not many of us that have not forgotten a date, an anniversary, phone number or even someone's name and then felt the embarrassment and frustration that comes along with it. Working with a licensed hypnotherapist or learning the skill of self-hypnosis are both effective options for making these lapses a thing of the past.

The functions of memory and concentration in the human brain work closely with each other. Memory refers to the ability to recall information and can be affected by numerous things such as lack of sleep, diet, stress, and the natural aging process. Concentration is the ability to recall the information successfully, and determines the detail of the memory that is recalled. Concentration is heightened by emotional states which is why most people remember in greater detail the morning of September 11 or the Kennedy assassination than they recall what they wore Tuesday last week.

Certain factors must be in place for a person to develop a solid memory. The first of these factors is attention or intending to remember something. Another factor that affects memory is interest. Having a genuine interest in the subject which you are trying to remember naturally creates a heightened emotional state to aid your concentration and memory. Imagery is one of the most influencial aspects of a solid memory. The subconscious mind works with images and feelings much more effectively than it does with words and numbers. Repetition is another factor of memory since through repeated exposure the information will become a permanent part of your mind. The subconscious mind fuctions much better when it is relaxed so one of the final factors of a solid memory is not to cloud your mind by telling yourself how forgetful or distracted you are and to relax and believe you have a good memory.

So, where does hypnosis fit into all this memory and concentration stuff? Hypnosis can take all the above factors that affect your ability to remember and improve and enhance them. Hypnosis reaches into your subconscious mind and allows you to learn how to develop, focus and sharpen your permanent memory, which is also a function of your subconscious mind. By learning how to tune and use the power of your subconsciousness, you will begin to not only remember more and more detail but also to be able to successfully recall them.

Many people are still under the impression that being hypnotised means losing control, but nothing could be further from the truth. While in a hypnotic state, you are completely aware of your situation. Typically, a hypnotic state is much like the feeling of being half-asleep and half-awake that we all experience while going to sleep or waking up. The difference is that while hypnotised your mind is still sharp and aware and your subconscious can recieve suggestions which help the mind to develop stronger memory and concentration skills.

Hypnosis is not limited to just enhancing memory and concentration. Hypnosis is also known to reduce stress level, raise self-esteem and confidence, and can be used to break bad habits while developing new healthy ones. Regardless of your choice to use a professional hypnotherapist to help or the choice of learning self-hypnosis, it will give you the proper tools to develop that solid memory you have always wanted.

Fixing Troubles Through Hypnosis

Over the years, many undeserved myths and mysteries concerning hypnosis and hypnotherapy have lead to a great number of fears and misunderstanding about what it actually is. In this article, we will help you to understand the great potential of improving your life and fixing your troubles through hypnosis.

Millions of people from all around the globe use hypnosis on a daily basis. Most are looking for remedies to all sorts of problems associated with the "human condition" such as:

* Personal matters * Phychological problems such as fears and phobias * Many physical troubles including addiction * Emotional difficulties * Weight loss and/or control * Performance enhancements in sports * Sleep disorders * Mental sharpness

History shows us that hypnosis and hypnotherapy have been around for more than 5000 years, dating back to both ancient Egyptian sleep temples and the ancient Greeks. In the modern world, it is now recognized as a safe and effective treatment for a great many issues. Both the British Medical Association and the American Medical Association have accepted hypnosis as a valuable methodology since the 1950's.

One of the greatest questions and concerns about hypnosis is about whether or not it is safe. Whether you are seeing a hypnotherapist or are interested in self-hypnosis, the process is completely safe. Like any other type of therapy, however, hypnosis should not be viewed as a "once size fits all" type of scenario.

There are two basic ways to explore hypnosis. You can visit a hypnotherapist in your area or you can learn the techniques of self-hypnosis. Let us take a look at self-hypnosis first, then we will move on to office visits.

Self Hypnosis

Self hypnosis is used daily by people from all walks of life. Whether you are a sportsman looking to improve your game, a business person out to boost your confidence, a housewife who would like a boost in your self-esteem, it does not matter.

The ability to get into a state of hypnosis by yourself is a specific skill and as with any skill some people are going to be better at it than others. However, almost everyone can benefit from learning the skills needed. Among the things that you can help yourself with through self-hypnosis are:

* Losing Weight * Changing habits such as smoking * Improve your concentration and memory * Raise your self-confidence * Resolve motivation issues

There are many books on the market that will teach the specific skills needed in order to self-hypnotize. Some websites on the subject of hypnosis will also offer free lessons.

Before we move on to looking at using a profession hypnotherapist, we need to take a moment as dispel a couple of the major anxieties people feel about hypnosis in general. These points apply to all types of hypnosis:

* You know what is happening at all times * You do not become unconscious or go to sleep * You can exit a hypnotic state at anytime you wish * You cannot "lose your mind" * There is no "hypnotised feeling" * Hypnosis is quite similar to relaxation and meditation techniques * It is in no way connect to any form of the occult

Professional Hypnosis

If it is possible to hypnotise yourself, why would anyone seek out a professional? A couple of reasons come to mind. The first are the results. Professional therapists will almost alway provide better results through hypnosis than you can achieve on your own. Another reason is to seek out hypnotherapy rather than just hypnosis.

The state of hypnosis is general induced by the therapist's voice. Many people will find that their senses seem to be far more heightened and alert under hypnosis, but again, there is no such thing as a "hypnotised feeling". While hypnotised, you will always be in complete control. Nobody can be made to do anything they do not want to do under hypnosis, nor can they be manipulated in any way. Normally, the patient will retain a full and accurate memory of everything that happened during the session afterward.

Hypnotherapy is the reason most people seek out a professional therapist. Hypnosis itself is quite unlikely to provide relief of a person's symptoms. There are two distictly different forms of therapy which can be carried out within a hypnotised state.

Suggestion Therapy:

Suggestion therapy is used to examine anxieties such as driving test nerves, or academic test performance issues. It is also used in treating some habits such as smoking, nail biting and some weight control problems and stress. Therapists will often work with two or more people at a time to lower the costs and two to four sessions are generally required to achieve the desired results.

Analytical Therapy

The goal of analytical therapy is to find and remove the root causes of problems. It is an effective treatment of such things as emotional problems, irrational phobias, relationship difficulties, sleeping disorders and many other troubles where there is a phycological factor involved. Analytical therapy is performed in a one-on-one setting and covers a treatment period of six to twelve weekly sessions to achieve its desired outcome. Often, analytical hypnotherapy produces a complete and lasting release from all symptoms for the patient.

If you have been struggling with any aspect of your life, and just do not seem to be able to resovle the issue simply by making a conscious decision, give hypnosis or hypnotherapy a try. It is likely to provide the results you are looking for and since it is completely safe, you have nothing to lose or worry about.

Explaining the Powers of Hypnosis

Hypnosis is an effective means to change bad habits into good ones, negative feelings into positive ones while still being easy and enjoyable. Hypnosis works because of the way the human brain works. All emotion, beliefs and habits are kept in the subconscious mind. Hypnosis provides a direct link to our subconscious thus allowing us to manipulate our habits and replace negatives with positive beliefs.

Many of us think of hypnosis as something similar to "deep sleep", but in reality it is more complex than that. Under hypnosis you are in a comfortable and relaxed state that focuses your concentration and attention, bypassing the filters of your conscious mind. Getting past these filters is what allows the subconscious mind to be receptive to positive suggestions and taps into the powerful mind-body connection. Experiencing a heightened state of awareness is common to most people while hypnotized, while approximately ten percent of people will become so relaxed that they do not remember the session.

Hypnosis is not always the result of one person hypnotizing another, or even someone hypnotizing themselves. Everyone experiences natural hypnotic states at least twice a day, right before falling asleep and immediately after waking. Many people will also enter a natural hypnotic state while driving, often called "highway hypnosis". In fact, natural hypnosis may occur anytime you become complete absorbed in an activity such as reading a book or watching a movie. Everything else seems to get blocked out, even to the point of not hearing people talk to you. Whenever concentration is intense, natural hypnotic states are easy to slip into.

Hypnosis, and hypnotherapy, are not new. Hypnosis is known to have been used by the Egyptians in sleep temples as well as by the Greeks as an important part of the healing treatments. In modern times, the use of hypnosis came back with the work of Franz Mesmer, an Austrian physician in the 1700's. It was later brought to the medical arena in the 1800's by Dr. James Braid working in hypnoanesthesia. Hypnosis and hypnotherapy was also used as an effective and rapid treatment of post-traumatic stress disorders following both World Wars and the Korean War.

Since 1958, the American Medical Association has approved of hypnosis as an effective treatment and recommends that training be included in medical school curriculum. It is also recognized as a Complimentary and Alternative Medicine treatment modality by the National Institute of Health which continues to fund research in the field of hypnosis.

While hypnosis is publicly best known for helping people break bad habits such as smoking and in the area of weight loss, researchers have also shown dramatic results in other areas. Areas that hypnotherapy has shined is as an adjunct to conventional treatments for cancer and for pain management. It is also known that hypnosis will often help in reducing and managing stress, overcoming insomnia, building self-esteem, and even improving performance on tests or in sports.

There are not many people who do not have habits or feelings that we would like to change. Unfortunately, it generally seems that nothing we do makes a lasting difference. It is not a flaw in our decision making or lack a will power, but rather a result of how our brains work. Hypnosis is the tool that unlocks the subconscious mind so that our conscious decisions to change are carried out in our day to day lives.

Hypnotherapy explained...

Hypnotherapy is therapy that is undertaken with a subject in hypnosis.

The word "hypnosis" (from the Greek hypnos, "sleep") is an abbreviation of James Braid's (1843) term "neuro-hypnotism", meaning "sleep of the nervous system".

A person who is hypnotized displays certain unusual characteristics and propensities, compared with a non-hypnotized subject, most notably hyper-suggestibility, which some authorities have considered a sine qua non of hypnosis. For example, Clark L. Hull, probably the first major empirical researcher in the field, wrote,

If a subject after submitting to the hypnotic procedure shows no genuine increase in susceptibility to any suggestions whatever, there seems no point in calling him hypnotised... C.L. Hull, Hypnosis & Suggestion, 1933: 392

Hypnotherapy is often applied in order to modify a subject's behavior, emotional content, and attitudes, as well as a wide range of conditions including dysfunctional habits, anxiety, stress-related illness, pain management, and personal development.

NLP - Neuro Linguistic Programming

Neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) is defined in the Oxford English Dictionary as "a model of interpersonal communication chiefly concerned with the relationship between successful patterns of behaviour and the subjective experiences (esp. patterns of thought) underlying them" and "a system of alternative therapy based on this which seeks to educate people in self-awareness and effective communication, and to change their patterns of mental and emotional behaviour"."'n. Neurolinguistic programming' Oxford English Dictionary (2003). Retrieved January 23, 2009, from [http://dictionary.oed.com/cgi/entry/00323586/00323586se1?single=1&query_type=word&queryword=Neurolinguistic+programming&first=1&max_to_show=10&hilite=00323586se1] The co-founders, Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder, claimed it would be instrumental in "finding ways to help people have better, fuller and richer lives".From the book jacket of Bandler and Grinder (1975b) They coined the title to denote a supposed theoretical connection between neurological processes ('neuro'), language ('linguistic') and behavioral patterns that have been learned through experience ('programming') and that can be organised to achieve specific goals in life.Tosey, P. & Mathison, J., (2006) "Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming Centre for Management Learning & Development, School of Management, University of Surrey.p.2 However, Bandler has claimed that humans are literally programmable. "When I started using the term 'programming,' people became really angry. They said things like, 'You're saying we're like machines. We're human beings, not robots.' Actually, what I was saying was just the opposite. We're the only machine that can program itself. We are 'meta-programmable.' We can set deliberately designed, automated programs that work by themselves to take care of boring, mundane tasks, thus freeing up our minds to do other, more interesting and creative, things." Bandler, R., (2008) Richard Bandler's Guide to Trance-formation: How to Harness the Power of Hypnosis to Ignite Effortless and Lasting Change Publisher: Health Communications (HCi) ISBN 0757307779

NLP was originally promoted by founders Bandler and Grinder in the 1970s as an effective and rapid form of psychological therapy,It is explicitly stated (e.g. Steve Andreas (forward p.ii) in Bandler & Grinder, 1979; Lankton, 1980, pp 9-13) that by using NLP, problems such as phobias and learning disabilities may be disposed of in less than a single one-hour session; whereas with other therapies, progress may take weeks or months.Full reference missing. According to Michael Heap in a paper on NLP written in 1988 for The Psychologist (the monthly magazine of the British Psychological Society p 261-262) one NLP workshop announcement claimed that spelling problems may be eliminated in five minutes (NLP Training Programme).Bandler and Grinder state, "Our desire in this book Structure of Magic is not to question the magical quality of our experience of these therapeutic wizards, but rather to show that this magic which they perform - psychotherapy...like other complex human activities such as painting, composing music, or placing a man on the moon - has structure and is, therefore learnable, given the appropriate resources. Neither is it our intention to claim that reading a book can ensure that you will have these dynamic qualities. We especially do not wish to make the claim that we have discovered the right' or most power approach to psychotherapy. We only desire to present a specific set of tools that seem to us to be implicit in the actions of these therapists, so you may begin or continue the never-ending process to improve, enrich and enlarge the skills you offer as a people-helper". capable of addressing the full range of problems which psychologists are likely to encounter, such as phobias, depression, habit disorder, psychosomatic illnesses, learning disorders. It was even alleged (Grinder & Bandler, 1981, p 166) that a single session of NLP combined with hypnosis can eliminate certain eyesight problems such as myopia, and can even cure a common cold (op.cit., p 174)?..(Also, op.cit., p 169) Bandler and Grinder make the claim that by combining NLP methods with hypnotic regression, a person can be not only effectively cured of a problem, but also rendered amnesic for the fact that they had the problem in the first place. Thus, after a session of therapy, smokers may deny that they smoked before, even when their family and friends insist otherwise, and they are unable to account for such evidence as nicotine stains'. It also espoused the potential for self-determination through overcoming learned limitationse.g. Bandler & Andreas 1985 and emphasized well-being and healthy functioning. Later, it was promoted as a 'science of excellence', derived from the study or 'modeling'p.6 Bandler, R. & Grinder, J. 1975b, The Structure of Magic: a book about language and therapy. Palo Alto: Science and Behavior Books of how successful or outstanding people in different fields obtain their results. It was claimed that these skills can be learned by anyone to improve their effectiveness both personally and professionallyO'Connor, Joseph & John Seymour (1993). Introducing Neuro-Linguistic Programming: Psychological Skills for Understanding and Influencing People. London, UK: Thorsons. ISBN 1855383446.(see p.xii)

Despite its popularity, NLP has been largely ignored by conventional social science because of issues of professional credibilityBerne, Eric (2005) "Chapter 10: How useful are 'popular' models of interpersonal communication?" in Interpersonal Communication; Taylor & Francis, United Kingdom. p162-180. ISBN 9780415181075 and insufficient empirical evidence to substantiate its models and claimed efficacy. It appears to have little impact on academic psychology, and limited impact on mainstream psychotherapy and counselling.Heap. M., (1988) Neurolinguistic programming: An interim verdict. In M. Heap (Ed.) Hypnosis: Current Clinical, Experimental and Forensic Practices. London: Croom Helm, pp.268-280. However, it had some influence among private psychotherapists, including hypnotherapists, to the extent that some claim to be trained in NLP and apply it to their practice. NLP had greater influence in management training, life coaching,In a review of the coaching industry in Australia, 13% of respondents reported that they had been trained in NLP. -- Spence, GB., Cavanagh, MJ., & Grant, AM., Duty of care in an unregulated industry: Initial findings on the diversity and practices of Australian coaches International Coaching Psychology Review 1, 71-85. and the self-help industry.Heap (1988) states, "How widespread or popular NLP has become in practice is difficult to say with precision, though. As an indication the number of people to have been trained to `Practitioner' level in the UK since NLP's inception seems likely to number at least 50,000. Trainings in NLP are found across the world, principally in countries where English is the first language, but including Norway, Spain and Brazil. There is no unified structure to the NLP practitioner community. Probably in common with other emergent fields, there is diversity in both practice and organisation, and there are resulting tensions".
