We've all seen them right? A group of people on stage with a hypnotist. We've seen the TV shows and the cabaret acts. Some impressive, some so-so and some just plain righteously cringe-makingly awful! And what did we all think everytime?

1) No way could that guy hypnotize me!

2) I wonder if I could hypnotize someone?

Admit it! Half of our brain is shouting "B.S!" the other is pondering - "Yeh, but what IF..."

But what happens before these shows is that those that volunteer to be 'put under' are checked over by the hypnotist before the show to see whether they are suitable. I've even seen shows where the hypnotist sends a selected subject back to his seat as he's not 'playing along'.

That's right the subject was not prepared, consciously or subconsciously, to comply with the hypnotist's hypnotic suggestions or instructions.

So why do some go along and others not? Many argue that the ones that are susceptible go along because they've been 'given permission' to act in a silly or odd way. That they don't want to disapoint the audience or the hypnotist.

Others reckon that if they are doing something that they normally wouldn't do then some form ofinfluence is taking place but is it hypnotism?

My view is that what we see on these shows ia poor relation to what real hypnotism can do when learned correctly from a professional.
