Get Ready to Blink this Halloween

The pink and maroon harem costume made popular on the sitcom I Dream of Jeannie is on display at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C., but imitations have abounded every Halloween since the popular show hit the airwaves in 1965. The famous harem girl ensemble was created by veteran Hollywood costume designer Gwen Wakeling, though actress Barbara Eden personally chose the pink and maroon color combination. The two colors symbolized different aspects of Jeannie's personality—pink represented her playful, girlish side, while maroon suggested a fiery, headstrong streak. The actress also selected the purple trim of her bottle, a 1964 Jim Beam liquor decanter received as a gift by the show's creator, Sidney Sheldon. Jeannie's revealing costume was risque by sixties standards, and network censors wouldn't permit Barbara Eden's navel to be seen on camera. In spite of this, there were a few caught-on-film occasions where Jeannie's waistband slipped below her navel. As you can see from the costume selections below, that doesn't seem to be an issue today. Several I Dream of Jeannie-inspired harem styles are available for adults and children, and there's even a harem costume for your family dog.

I had no idea there are so many genie outfits and accessories, for big and little girls, both... even the dogie costume - ooh-la-la :) They are incredibly cute!
