What is Flash?
Adobe Flash (previously Macromedia) is a multimedia platform developed and distributed by Adobe Systems. Flash is a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to websites. Flash is commonly used to create animation, advertisements, integrate video into web pages and develop online applications or browser-based games. Flash can manipulate vector and raster graphics and supports audio and video streaming. Youtube uses a flash-based video player, for example.[ Read more about Flash on Wikipedia ]
Do You Hate Flash Sites Too?

Yes, flash sucks!
antred says:
I hate Flash mostly because of its tendency to freeze / crash my browser, although I'm not sure if that's Flash's fault or that of the browser.
jack_hate_flash says:
yes, not only the flash. I hate the person sitting behind the screen that makes flashes too. They are kind thrive who steal your time and resources away by fill you with junk effect and useless ads.
George says:
Flash sucks massively.
Andrew says:
Web browsers cant work properly with flash, because flash seems to change every 5 hours. Was you tube always flash, because suddenly im having alot of videos crash with firefox 11. For the last 10 years its been visual media crap loaded onto web pages that have caused headaches - we are sick of these. First it was java virtual machine always playing up with ie, now its stupid flash aplets. When are we going to have computers that dont crash 40% of the time. Our technology is getting worse and worse. We expect crashes now. Our technology giants are going backwards. windows is unstable, macs are even slipping. No one ever says 'that crashes lots' they just say look its shiny.
Kyle says:
Oh. It's because I didn't chose a side. :P Never mind. I am the one that's broken!
Flash is bad because not only does it slow your PC way down but back door Trojans can be loaded onto your computer that can get around virus scanners UNLEss you do a quick scan right away after viewing such a page.
For those in the dark a backdoor Trojan disguises itself and will go around your firewall opening up your computer to other users.
often times the program the virus loads in will try to start FIRST every single time you boot up your computer making it veeeeeeeeeeery slow to start.
In fact. The virus program will try to load before your essential windows stuff loads upon boot up.
These bad boys are very hard to get rid of as they are hidden and you cannot simply add/remove it.
If you have a faster PC it will probably take a while before you noticed but eventually your computer will grind to a halt or not even start up once the bios gets erased to make room for the virus software.
One such software Dad found was called Gator which didn't look good and Dad tried many techniques but could not get rid of it.
Kyle says:
Your freaking comment system is broken!!
James says:
I hate flash so much. All it does is eat bandwith and slow my connection speed.
Annie says:
Kill flash sites.
StrawberrySteve says:
I have an iPhone. NEVER gonna get any love from Flash here.
Jerry says:
I hated flash 11+ years ago and it hasn't improved or changed a bit! It is still slow-loading, and no faster on cable connection than it was with my previous dial-up or DSL connections! It sucks! It's the online equivalent of phone answering systems for businesses (If you'd like to...press...aaah! HANG UP!). I'm there waiting for flash to load, get annoyed, and leave!
LC says:
I hate it! I want to play flash games, but flash itself is the devil. Crashes, slows everything down, makes my computer burning hot, and takes up all the memory.
killbill says:
I hate it. Kill them flash developers.
herodes says:
FUCK FUCKING FLASH.
Aleksis says:
I hate buying a phone just to find out the next week it needs a new flash plug-in that will never come available.
Sarge says:
I don't like Flash because of CPU usage. We need a better solution for multimedia streaming.
Shearbass says:
I don't like the redirects embedded into FLASH that cause my PC to go to fake antivirus scanners. Or when it continually causes my browser to stop responding and I have to open task manager to manually end the plugin_container.exe task. It's hard on MAC CPUs and many tablets. It should go away.
Luis Alberto says:
Flash hogs cpu, ram, memory, and makes computers unresponsive. Usually one flash player wont hog. But if you open 5 tabs, and they each have 5 ads, with videos it makes the computer unresponsive(All computers). In general its inneficient. Flash websites are "pretty" but poorly functional.
Matt says:
My heart sinks when I visit a site only to find 6 or 7 different banners/ads/intros on the same page. I may as well go and get a coffee whilst my PC and Firefox struggle to display all this garbage before I can get to the information I need. Web developers who integrate so much flash on a website should be shot...
dsme says:
I hate Flash too for 3 main reasons. 1. They are high maintenance on computers. 2. They take longer to load. and 3. They overly use busy looking animation on their homepages - so when you're trying to read something you've got ads, banners, video options, and the like spinning, swirling, and bouncing around. It's ANNOYING! You can't concentrate to read anything because the corner of your eyes are being caught by stuff moving around.
antred says:
I hate it when poorly programmed flash plugins cause Firefox to freeze. Sometimes I can't even bring up the task manager to kill FF. Grrrr.
hein says:
@Loud68, why do you think that you're on the right side? Cause you learned to do things much more complicated as they are?
Roger says:
I absolutely hate flash. Very sick of having to wait for stupid flash animations so that I can get simple information. If you have to have flash on your site make sure it is deeper than the main page. For instance, I was going to look at sony laptops at sony.com but the page took so long to load because of flash that I decided F*#$ SONY.
AcharadSami says:
Flash is overloaded with a lot of missions and had to be backwards-compatible. And didn't designed for today's 3D graphics, intense scripting and database querying. But patched for it in time. So it started to struggle -- Also there are up to 20 - 30 instances of flash just in one web page (Thanks to ads) That makes your browser crash and act as a memory hog -
There are a lot more efficient and faster alternatives already : WebGL, WebM video, HTML5,CSS3, Unity etc.
BC says:
I hate the fact that so many site pop up flash ads for dating sites that border on NSFW. Busy, moving, bright flash ads sometimes draw pointless attention.
Jon says:
When I enter a flash site I immediately press back
No, I love flash websites!
Jack says:
Your generalizations sound childish.
<b><a href="http://www.mediahut.co.za/">Web Developer</a></b> says:
As a Web Developer I find that it does suck, you can't say no though if a client wants it. When trying to conserve bandwidth flash may not be the best idea.

cristianiacobanu says:
Outdated.
Loud068 says:
It appears to me that alot of the comments against flash are not only
un-educated responses to a valid question but from ignorant internet users that think they know what they re talking about but are strongly mistaken...This is also in regards to whoever stated that "flash is awesome and html sucks" That comment is actually the most annoying of them all and I happen to be a very strong flash supporter and developer. Used properly, flash in conjunction with HTML can be a magical tool. Extremely robust and user friendly and I won't even mention the fact that HTML alone has failed to bring in a viable replacement for flash. I do not know one person in the word that can do what flash can do in HTML alone. So until Apple or any other company can provide the development world with a viable replacement to flash, I will continue to use it. Heres another thought, maybe instead of spending so much time and money trying to kill flash we should look into fixing the web browsers...After all it is the web browsers that don't work nicely with flash. Maybe instead of being mad at flash you should all point the finger at that god awful browser named Internet Explorer! Talk about the worst thing to happen to the web...But, I digress. Heres to stoping sloppy flash design and promoting the death of IE!
DR says:
When done exceptionally well, It's actually much better than what html can possibly do!
Performance, usability and SEO are only issues when you do it wrong.
DW says:
I'm a designer and developer. Flash has its place and HTML will not replace it. There were many improvements with Flash SEO and people are not really doing Flash intros any more - that trend is long gone (at least it should be). I like Flash and HTML and CSS and JS. And I like your Flash Ads --> Kidding, but ironic.
joe says:
No, Flash os great. It's html that sucks!
SoyCandleLover-Maker says:
Well... I'm sort of in the middle, but picked the least liked side because I like balance. :D I love Flash for youtube and some of the games on a website. However, I absolutely detest entire flash websites. They drive me crazy if it interferes with loading.
Here's Why I Hate Flash Sites
Since I openly declare my hate for flash websites and ads, I suppose I have to explain why exactly I dislike them so much. First of all, being a movie and video game fan I often go and visit the official websites in search of new information, screenshots, release dates and the like. Nowadays it's almost a given that a movie or a video game site will be done in flash and full of shiny effects and cool soundtracks. While this provides a lot of eye-candy, it barely gives you any useful info.Navigating such a website is an annoying experience. In full screen my somewhat dated dual core Athlon X2 CPU isn't always enough for smooth playback. After every click I have to endure some silly pre-loading screen, after which I will be rewarded one short paragraph of text - the only useful part - and presented with yet another concept art piece and a different soundtrack I didn't ask for. Don't even get me started on how the text is often white on a dark background for added "coolness".
What if I want to find something specific, like a FAQ section of the game, or read more about the movie? No sir, that's impossible in a flash website. You simply have to watch some trailer first (thankfully most designers include a Skip button) and "enjoy" the slow, crappy transitions each accompanied by sound effects, until you finally can get to the page you want. Annoying, unneeded, pointless! This is exactly why I often prefer going to Wikipedia which still has enough sense to present the information in good old black text on white background.
Flash ads are another matter. While I might be one of the few flash website haters, I am positive that no one really likes flash ads. The flashy (pun not intended) animation, the laggy scrolling and slower responsiveness of the browser, and, oh man, the sounds. Whoever had the idea that annoying your visitors with loud sounds would make them pay more attention to the ads? Kill those things with fire! (Actually, Firefox extensions will do too - read below).

How to Block Flash Using Firefox Extensions
Thankfully a "cure" exists for all your flash troubles if you use Firefox browser (and I am sure Chrome has some plugins for that too). Of course you can simply not install a Flash plugin at all, but who wants to lose the ability to watch funny videos of cats on Youtube? I thought so. So here's a short list of extensions that can block flash ads and more:- Flashblock - probably the simplest and most straightforward add-on for the job. Like the name suggests it blocks all Flash content by default. If you want to see the blocked flash thingy, all you have to do is click the placeholder icon and it will be loaded. This plugin also has a whitelist so you can enable Youtube, for example.
- AdBlock Plus is a big and popular Firefox extension for blocking ads. Unlike Flashblock or NoScript all ads are enabled by default, and you simply have to disable the ones you choose. It also supports domain blocking and wildcards so you can for example block all URLs containing the word "ads".
- NoScript: this is my favorite Firefox add-on by far (read my review here). It blocks scripts and plugins (JavaScript, Java, Flash, Silverlight) from all domains that are not in the whitelist. It might take a day or two for you to enable all the important domains that you visit regularly, but from then on you won't be seeing any ads or flash from unwanted sources. It will make your browser much more secure, too!

- HTML5 supports "video" tag which basically enables browsers to playback videos without usage of Flash. In my opinion this makes Flash unnecessary for anything besides browser-based games.

- I hate flash too. It is ridiculously processor intensive, bloated and doesn't using the capabilities of graphics accellerator hardware properly. It is full of security bugs. The linux version for 64 bit processors is barely acceptable, and because it is proprietary the community can't fix it, which is infuriating. The gnash people do their best, but Adobe keeps elaborating the standard (a serious problem in its own right) making to hard for them to keep up. The sooner we get rid of this awful "non-standard" which seems to have infected large chunks of the web the better. Bring on HTML5 and the video tag.

- Thank you, I'm glad I'm not alone in hating Flash websites. I don't mind it on games either but I almost always leave a website if I see that it uses Flash. (:
