I Hate Halloween

Why I Hate Halloween

Some may think it's terrible that I hate Halloween, but I do have good reason. I worked as a costume rental shop manager for nine years. I survived nine years of 90 hour work weeks during September through November, and horrifying messes made by Halloween party-goers by the dozens each hour.

The crazy part? I'm not alone! A lot of people really hate Halloween for a number of different reasons. Some hate Halloween for what it stands for, or what they think it stands for. Some people hate Halloween because they can't stand dressing in costume. Some hate Halloween because it's one more commercialized holiday. Whatever the reason, have fun reading this article about refusing to have fun on Halloween.

Halloween Hater Reason #1: It's Complicated

Deciding on the perfect costume is hard work

For some, it's just too difficult to think of a cool costume. It has to be cool, but not so cool that everyone else has thought of it. It has to be awesome but not so awesome that everyone's talking about you all night (unless you like that sort of thing). It has to be cute, but not so tiny that you freeze to death. It's complicated. It's hard to do, to decide what you want to "be". As a costume professional, I know. Only 5% of the people who came to rent a costume had any idea what they wanted to be.

If indecision is a chronic issue for you, here are some great tools you can use to overcome it!

Halloween Hater Reason #2: Candy Cravings!

Candy is a real distraction for dieters

So it's a fact. In America, one fourth of all the candy sold all year round is for Halloween. One-fourth! And 90% of parents admit that they sneak candy from their kids' stash. Ever since my boys were born I've told them that snickers, kit kats and twix bars have a high likelyhood of being "unsafe" so Mommy's going to have to "watch those" for them.

Here are some tools for those with serious a serious sweet tooth!

Halloween Hater Reason #3: Too Spendy!

Halloween is the second most expensive holiday

On average, Americans each spend $66 on Halloween (second only to Christmas, which is nuts--at least at Christmas most folks are buying a big list of people a present). So a family of four would spend over $250. It's no wonder it seems expensive, it is. To purchase a very cheap adult costume, they start around $16. To rent a very fancy costume could be $50 to $200. Not to count if you're having a party or dressing up a crew of children.

If it's your budget keeping you from enjoying Halloween, and nothing else, here are some great books on whipping your finances into shape!

Halloween Hater Reason #4: Clowns

You'll run into one today if not any other day

Free Hugs buttonIf you're like me, clowns creep you out. Full grown men in full face makeup are always a no-no for me. The only thing worse is a full grown man in full face makeup wearing a leotard (I realized this when I went to see "Cats" the first time and last time). Here are the top things to prove that clowns are creepy if you don't believe me.

I have to say ... I love Halloween. I don't always dress up (I like to, though!), but even if I don't, I like going downtown and seeing all the costumes. There's always a lot going on here in Flagstaff on Halloween, so it's a fun time to be out and about or go to a party.

I hate Halloween and I'll add another reason why to your list. As someone dealing with infertility, it's a really difficult time of the year because so much emphasis is on children everywhere you go or look: kids costumes, candy for kids, parents posting their kids' Halloween pictures on facebook...not even my own house is safe because all the parents in our neighborhood hit up our house Halloween night for trick-or-treating (because we are, apparently, the only couple not out with our own kids that night. Sigh.)

I'm so mixed on Halloween. I love dressing up in costume and watching my kids play act in theirs. I love the fun of going house to house candy hunting, visiting local college dorms decorated for it, and the generosity and creativity of people who do so much to make a fun night for children. But I hate it too! I hate any idea of celebrating "evil," even though I know that for most people it's not about that. It still have those overtones, even if the people who actually celebrate it for that are few. I'm not all that thrilled with all the creepy stuff associated. I hate that where I used to live you had to keep your pets inside because there were actual Satanists who might kill them on Halloween. I hate that it tends to croud out my son's birthday, who was born near Halloween. And, I hate that the night of walking around in the cold followed by tons of sugar so often leads to a week of my kids being down with a cold (even when I limit the amount they eat).

Haha, great lens. I'm not big on Halloween but of course don't mind designing stuff for people who are! I also hate clowns. Maybe that could be a lens all on its own :)

Well done lens. I personally don't get very excited about Halloween but it's fun to see that kids still do.

Your point well taken with regards to how you feel about Halloween after 9 years of dealing with the rental shop. Halloween is also too commericalized and is really for the kids to go trick or treating and for grownups to have an excuse to be scary and get all dressed up.
    Thanks for sharing.

A couple of years ago we survived a house fire 4 days before Halloween - it was horrible that halloween - made me think of how we make fun of death and that it's better to make peace with it.
