How d'you get away with certain household tasks?

From the lens I Hate Housework.

Too funny! I can't stand cleaning, but it drives me crazy to live in a mess...which puts me in a bit of a pickle. Especially since no one else in the house bothers to clean anything.
  • mamabush Apr 17, 2012 @ 3:24 pm | delete
Housework is the bane of my existence! 5 kids makes lots of dishes, lots of laundry and lots of dirty floors. My pet peeves are cleaning the tubs and mopping...maybe I should hire someone once a week to come do that stuff. That would be awesome! Flylady worked for me until I had 3 kids, now with 5 I get overwhelmed. But I stay on top of it pretty good...my goal is to always stay within an hour of being "guest-ready". :) Fun lens!

Oh my ... so it is 11am on a Saturday, typically the day of doing my household chores ... but you see I am here penning a guestbook comment. I did throw in a load of laundry so as not to make my day a total waste. My one task is dusting ... that seems to always get away from me.

Very funny lens! I can totally relate! I hate housework, and anyone who visits my home can immediately tell. I say my purpose in life is to make other women feel better about their homes.

I can't wait to read more of this entertaining lens on hating housework. I HATE HOUSEWORK, TOO! I know what you mean about FlyLady and putting on those stupid lace-up shoes! It takes time to do that. I wear flip-flops every chance I can! Slide 'em on, slide 'em off, quick and easy! FlyLady has helped me out a lot, though, and I own a few of her books...not sure where they are, probably in a dusty corner! Doing housework didn't bother me for the first several years after moving out of my parents' home, but after moving over a dozen times and living alone in a house full of stuff I inherited and didn't know what to do with and now picking up after a man, I am burned slap out on doing housework!! Cleaning after someone else, especially when I just cleaned, is really annoying to me! If an adult has all their limbs, isn't sick or an invalid, then pick up after yourself, dammit! Oops, I think that's the first time I've cursed on Squidoo, sorry about that! Oh, I better step off my soap box now before I get banned! ;-) Totally enjoyed your lens! Thumbs up, bookmarked, and I'm going to subscribe so I can read all your guestbook comments on how much other people HATE HOUSEWORK!!!! I could finish all those unfinished Squidoo lenses if I didn't have to do housework.
  • hysongdesigns May 30, 2011 @ 11:21 am | delete
LoL. Loved your lens; I never learned to 'properly' keep house and have been a slob all my life. But I do keep trying!

I've just been reading a heap of lenses on how to get organized. Now I find I Hate Housework. ROFL. Maybe I should try the Chardonnay approach! Funny thing is that when I worked full time everything was done. Now I'm home it seems nothing gets done - except Squidoo-ing.

    Wonderful writing and so funny.

I also hate housework and cooking on top of that, but
I still do it because I have to.

Once I get started, I'm okay with doing it, it's the procrastination
that kills me more than the work.

As George Claude Lorimer said "Putting off an easy thing makes it hard. Putting off a hard thing makes it impossible."

    Definitely A 5++

I laughed my way right through this lens. You can visit my house any time you want. I know you'll understand what you encounter... I used to have a pictured of a woman crouching on top of a refrigerator. The caption was: Inordinate fear of housework. I'm sure I'll find it some day. When I organize my office... Or they can just use it as my epitaph when they find it after I've gone to the great hotel in the Beyond. (maid service, yeah!)
  • marsha32 Jul 23, 2010 @ 9:44 am | delete
I sure found this to be such a fun lens!
Love your new kitchen, btw, orbs and all.
I hate housework.....mostly I just want to sit on the computer in my attempt to earn money. Life goes on.

I needed a laugh so came back by to read this again. I love the hints for asking hubbie for help. especially limiting your harangue to 2 or 3 hours tops, ROFL. Here's another one, if all else fails, suggest he's too old to do it. That usually results in proving you wrong. LOL
  • ShirlW Jun 22, 2010 @ 8:51 pm | delete
Very funny indeed! I hate cleaning too, but I love that whole crisis cleaning approach. Gotta try that, can I begin with the glass of Chardonnay? Never heard of Flylady before and that's probably a good thing, I don't think we would have got along so well.
  • Tipi May 8, 2010 @ 10:32 am | delete
This is funny! ~ I used to be a professional cleaning contractor and did a lot of nasty cleaning myself. Its pretty amazing how horrible some people can let conditions become, unbelievable even. I mean I have spent hours just cleaning 1 toilet, it must not have ever been cleaned in 10 years... Boy, could I tell you some stories about ovens that first needed to be shoveled out before any real cleaning began!!! Yikes! ~ 5 Stars and great fun!
  • VickiSims Apr 14, 2010 @ 11:37 pm | delete
Hilarious - this whole lens is so me, too. I tried the flylady and found deleting the constant barage of emails was eating up the 15 minutes that I could be dealing with a "hotspot"!
  • greenspirit Feb 22, 2010 @ 5:48 am | delete
Life's too short for hoovering; nasty, noisy business. We got rid of the carpets...problem solved.
  • WindyWinters Feb 3, 2010 @ 4:08 am | delete
Congrats on your Purple Star. I actually love housework...it's the cooking I can't stand. I have a separate laundry room so that helps. I do have a laundry and cleaning schedule so everything is usually very tidy.

  • Heather426 Jan 29, 2010 @ 4:55 pm | delete
Hilarious lens, loved it especially the hints for dealing with husbands. I actually love a clean house but it's impossible with kids around. I always just closed their doors too. Life is too short to worry about that! But iron? Have not done it in at least 10 years. If it comes out too wrinkly to wear, I just give it away....and buy a non wrinkle item next time. LOL
  • arncyn Jan 29, 2010 @ 12:48 pm | delete
Very engaging (and hilarious!) lens, Bev, I really enjoyed my time here. Congrats on your purple star and your spanking new kitchen! Love it. So.. have you had to clean it yet? (: *blessed by an angel*
  • sdakin Jan 29, 2010 @ 11:27 am | delete
Yeah! I loved this lens. SO with you on the cleaning.....I've heard doing housework with little kids likened to shoveling the driveway in the middle of the blizzard. As soon as you turn around, you're back to doing the first part of your task all over again!
Couldn't do flylady either. I couldn't get past the shining the sink part...that in itself took so darn much time that I wouldn't have energy to get to the next task.
  • KNicholls Jan 24, 2010 @ 7:08 pm | delete
What a great lens and I laughed all through it. I'm with you on the cleaning; fortunately my husband loves to clean. I have sprinkled angel dust on this one. Oh yea, I did the Fly Lady too, that sure brought back some memories! Thanks for the laugh.

One more thing! Ironing is not necessary. When DD was 5, I did have to iron a choir robe for her. I asked hubby to get ironing board out of attic. when I opened ironing board, it made horrid noise. DD sweetly asked "What is that thing?" I have not had it out since. It frightens her. And she is now 36 and irons every night!
  • Joan4 Jan 23, 2010 @ 6:43 pm | delete
I learned many years ago that if you cut up some onion and bell pepper and put it on the stove in some water, it will smell like you have been cooking for hours!! I have laughed and laughed at this lens because all of it is so familiar to me -- are you sure you were not watching me?? Hilarious!

Well darn...taking the flowers, the candy and walking away in a sulking sort of way. I hate housework as well.

Make the bed??!!?? As I heard a comedian once point out, we don't lace out shoes up when we take them off, do we?

Can you smell the pseudo smoke of a burn out blessing?

This is one of the very best lens I've read since I joined squidoo!!! I love the humor and I relate very much to your feelings regarding housework. Much to my mother's horror she raised me in a 'spotless' house. Cleaning for her was sheer joy and couldn't understand how a daughter of hers could not love housework like she still does at the young age of 70. I am a good house cleaner when I choose to be but I refuse to clean house everyday of my life especially for pleasure. There is so much more to life than cleaning house! Its' a never ending job the way I percieve it and so I have my days I go 'on strike' and do something I want to do that has nothing to do with housework. Great lens worthy of Fav 5*!

I had a great laugh reading your lens. My advice to any house visitors is that they don't use their fingers to find the dust in non essential areas.
  • Cleanerman Nov 14, 2009 @ 8:29 pm | delete
hi great lens. Bagless vacuum cleaners dont always mean easy of emptying. we use a dyson and cant fault it, there are too many cleaners that require you to not only empty the canister but also to bang the dust out of the filter each time you use the cleaner. Dyson you simply wash the filter about every six months or so. Cleanerman www.canister-vacuum.com

Just finished the washing and arms ache from folding all the clothes out of the drier (it's pouring with rain so I have a good excuse). Reading your lens not only put me in a better mood, it actually made me laugh. I can't tell you how much I hate housework particularly because, as soon as I do any, perhaps because my computer is broken, it will all need to be done very quickly again. I never buy clothes that need ironing no matter how lovely they are. Non iron are better.

Love this lens and I'm blessing it too.

Have to say the subject of your lens...well, it's not my favorite...and the idea of blessing housework? Well, an angel has to do what an angel has to do and I have to bless your lens. Now if we could talk about something else, please...

I hate housework too! But more than anything I hate the mess. The fact that we are renovating (haha) is an extremely good excuse not to do it.....as far as I'm concerned, but I hate the mess.

My best fridge magnet says: "Doing housework whilst the kids are growing is like shovelling snow whilst it's still snowing" Sooooooooo true.

Absolutely love your new kitchen. I wanna have one too.

ah yes, I loathe housework, and tragically we live in a town where everyone's home is spotless...it's infuriating! (they don't do their own cleaning, basically....the only people I know who do are myself and my neighbor, and our houses show it!) Excellent lens, and congrats on the new kitchen :)

I don't do housework, that's what hubbys & kids are for...I figure if I cook and feed them, they can clean up the mess...my laundry goes dirty to the local fluff & fold and comes back all soft & clean & folded...I've always been the primary wage earner...figure if I pay the bills, I shouldn't have to clean :-)

You lot in normal land don't appreciate how lucky you are to a) be able to do your housework in a nice cool climate, i.e. not somewhere that's hot as fires of f------g hell like Spain and b) buy cleaning stuff that has not been vacuumed off the supermarket shelves by the f------g tourists. Can I have your old vacuum cleaners?

Thanks for sharing that - made me laugh. Also nice to feel I'm not alone in my innate Undomestic Goddessness. Can relate tot he ironing thing, my ironing pile is bigger than m children. In fact there are clothes at the bottom which they've probably grown out of.
BTW I have a SEBO, but its the cylinder version. Love it, though. If you've got to vac, may as well do so with hospital grade suction...
  • beruse Jul 24, 2009 @ 3:30 am | delete
Yes I had a cleaner round a couple of times, but never got round to a regular booking. Nearly took one on recently but the thought of first clearing up my clutter delayed it, then she decided not to take it on after all. Will be different when I retire - more mess no doubt.
  • theraggededge Jul 22, 2009 @ 12:02 pm | delete
I think it's the filter that makes mine so difficult to deal with - you can't just empty the thing, it needs extra attention and I'm afraid I have a very short attention span when it comes to vacuum cleaning. However, that little problem has now been solved by getting DuH to do it for me. Asthma? What asthma?

Dishes, yep. Have to do them immediately. Wiping never. I get the kid to do the cutlery but as you can see from his comment, it's like pulling teeth.

Bathroom - everyday in our house. Brand new white suite and open window = dust. Kids = widdle under the seat and towels on the floor. Lorry-driving DuH = tide mark round the bath.

Hmm... and some of us are lucky to have a lady wot comes in and cleans. Ahem!
  • beruse Jul 22, 2009 @ 6:44 am | delete
Heck, just reading that lot has made me want to lie down in a darkened room.

I have a bagless Vacuum cleaner and I think its great. I get it out and frighten it occasionally. It will never do the whole flat in one go, gets overheated and refuses to continue which suits me fine. Gives me an excuse to park it somewhere for a day or three.

I do wipe the bath etc after a shower, takes about 30 seconds and keeps it shiny. The rest of the bathroom may get done monthly, or when it looks too grubby, or when visitors are due whichever is the sooner.

I am fortunate (from a housework point of view) that I work all day so rarely see the flat when the sun is shining. Thats when the dust shows up!

Washing up - I do most of that as I cook and try to do the plates soon after. Easy and quick before the food sticks to the pots/pans/plates etc. Seldom dry the stuff though, air drying is best!

But mainly I am very untidy - stuff everywhere and bever enough space to hide it.
  • welshalex Jul 21, 2009 @ 12:12 pm | delete
she makes me wipe and put away the knives and forks... everyday. so that's how she gets away with doing stuff.
