Reading Opens Up Whole New Worlds

Reading is my passion! I remember the first book I EVER took out of the library. Well, maybe not the title - but the subject. It was about how to make paper and I was 7 years old.

We had just moved to a new town and it was summer. I had nothing to do and had not met any new friends yet. So I decided to go to the library - by myself. Now this was a long time ago and things like 7-year-olds walking to the library were done all the time. Besides it was a pretty small town.

Off I went for the slightly over one mile hike to the library. Of course, being new in town I had to get a library card. MY OWN library card! This was a Red Letter Day in my life!

Great Children's Books

available for the Kindle as well as paper!

I Like To Read - Do You?

where I go my current book goes...

After the librarian helped me fill out the application for MY library card I was told that I had to have one of my parents sign it for permission - so off I went on the 10 block walk/run back home for my mother to sign the paper. Then, AGAIN, I walked back to the library and was soon holding that precious cardboard document with MY name on it!!

I was off to the children's section lickity-split!! In my ignorance, I thought I could only take out one book so I hurriedly chose the newest one I could find. Lots of pictures and the ink smelled so good I just knew I had to read this one. I checked the book out and ran all the way home to read it.

ONE HOUR LATER: That was a GOOD book. I now know ALL about how paper is made from trees and the men who cut them down.

But what now? My book was read? I have nothing to read!

You guessed it - another one mile trip to the library; but this time.... they were closed! It was a Saturday and now I had to wait until Monday before I could check out another book and continue my journey in the "Land of Readers"

Thus Began My Journey Into Independent Reading

and I have never looked back

That's an honest to God true story folks. 6 miles - one book, but only the start of a long and loving relationship with reading. I can't imagine any of my kids doing that - even if I would have allowed them to go such a distance on their own!

From books on paper making, I eventually found myself in the land of Henry Higgins and Rigsby, Dick and Jane, Tom Swift, The Hardy Brothers, Nancy Drew (I preferred the Hardy Brothers but used to hide those ones because I was a girl and didn't want to get teased!! LOL).

I Learned about the Civil War long before we studied it in school. I read about Harriet Tubman and Uncle Tom's Cabin. I explored desert islands with Robin Caruso and Swiss Family Robinson. I discovered the future with Andre Norton and Robert Heinlein.

Settling In To A Passion For Reading

Fantasy and Science Fiction

As I grew older my reading tastes refined somewhat to Fantasy and Science Fistion, some horror (If it was Stephen King or a limited number of others). I absolutely LOVE anything by Anne McCaffrey and the wonderful world of Pern.

I can't even tell you the number of science fiction books I have read. Assimov, Heinlein, Norton and all the others.

Stephen King and The Stand was a serious mind-boggler and the TV mini series couldn't stand up to it! (No pun intended)

My bookshelves are full, full full!!! I have them in the basement, in my bedroom, in my office - piles of books everywhere. Every once in a while I grit my teeth and collect as many as I can bear to part with and trundle them off to the second hand bookstore - but I hate doing that as I can often be found reading certain books for the 2nd and sometimes even a third time!

Stephen King!

did you know that he played small parts in every movie that was made from one of his books?

He's ONE scary guy!

Salem's Lot was the one and only book that EVER kept me up at night.

Diana Gabaldon

Check this out

Diana Gabaldon has written this great series about a women who goes through a ring of stones in post WWII England and is transported back to Scotland of the mid 1700's. She falls in love, comes back to the present time and her husband, raises her daughter - goes back. And I don't want to spoil it for anyone.

It may sound like it, but it's really NOT sci fi or fantasy - more of an historical novel, I'd say.

S.M. Stirling

History with a fantastic twist

S.M. Stirling wrote a series of books which takes the entire island of Nantucket back in time. There are good guys and bad guys and intrigue and triumph!

His other series is about what would happen if the laws of physics were changed? What would happen if the entire world were to be "transported" back to the time before electricity and gunpowder? And that's all I'm gonna say 'bout that!! You'll have to read it to find out!

Amazon's Kindle 2

I want one!

I'll tell you right up front that I do not have a Kindle 2 - but I WANT one and someday soon I will.

It holds up to 1500 books and there are 230,000 titles just waiting with my name on them.

No more overflowing bookshelves and if I want to switch books in the middle, the Kindle remembers where I left off for when I come back to it. Do you know how much kleenex I go through just as markers for the books I am reading? LOL

The Kindle will even read TO ME, if I want to listen while I'm driving or preparing dinner. In fact..... that gives me an idea - I wonder if they have cookbooks ready for the kindle - let's go check!

Drumroll...... yep!! Plenty of cookbooks for the Kindle. That is Sooooo cool!

Yes!! There ARE Cookbooks for the Kindle 2

now MAYBE I'll do some cooking

I can set this up on the counter top and let the Kindle read the recipe to me as I prepare the ingredients. How cool is that?

I gotta get me one of these puppies!!!! SOON!

Features of the Kindle 2

I could be passionate about this!

The Kindle 2 downloads a full book in under 60 seconds and there is NO "internet" fee to pay - it works on the same principle as your sell phone. - it's wireless. No contracts, no monthly bills at all!

You can download FOR FREE the first chapter of books you're thinking of purchasing. (That's more than I read in the bookstore - sometimes to my dismay).

You can have many newspapers downloaded to your Kindle and have it waiting for you every morning. You can also get your magazines on it - and over 1000 blogs.

There are 6 type sizes - I bet I could get rid of my reading glasses!!!

No glare screen so that you can read in the sun with no problems.

Lightweight but easy to hold You know, sometimes when I am reading a large book - even if it's a paperback - my hands get tired. Can you imagine what this will do for someone with arthritis?

You can download PDF and Word documents to it too.

You can turn the page with either hand - so which ever one isn't holding the bon-bon can do the work!

It has a built in dictionary and access to Wiki-pedia for those out of context words that you can't pick up.

Most books are about $9.99, which is less than the book would cost at the bookstore. All the books you buy are backed up by Amazon, so you can always re-download them if necessary.
