I really do love leggings as they are an important often overlooked fashion accessory -- no ifs, ands or BUTTS about it!
Call me a fashion-forward maven who has often been ahead of the curve when it comes to what's fashionable. Perhaps I'm also a little miss-understood in the fashion department! I've been setting fashion trends in my own little circle of friends for quite a few years.
Leggings have ALWAYS been a fashion staple for me. I'm happy to say that they have become more mainstream today rather than avante garde. I've been wearing them for years ... primarily as a replacement for opaque tights and under LONG sweaters, jackets or mini dresses. Well, ladies! I am happy to say that my prediction has been spot-on as leggings are now trendy!

Leggings are a type of fitted clothing covering the legs, which can be worn by both men and women. Originally leggings were two separate garments, one for each leg. Oh wow, is that NOT interesting? Two legged leggings!!!
Modern leggings are typically made from a blend of lycra, Spandex, nylon, cotton, or polyester blend, but they can also be made from wool, silk and other materials. Leggings are available in a multitude of colours and decorative designs.
Leggings can be worn fully exposed, in place of trousers, or partially covered by a garment such as a skirt , a large t-shirt or shorts, or fully covered by an outer garment, such as a full length skirt. Leggings are typically ankle-length, and some are stirrupped or encase the feet. Some are shorter. Leggings are worn to keep a person's legs warm or as protection from chafing during an activity such as exercise, and/or as a decorative or fashion garment. Leggings are worn by both men and women in an exercise situation, but predominantly by women outside such situations.
In contemporary usage, leggings refers to tight, form-fitting trousers that extend from the waist to the ankles. In the United States, they are sometimes referred to as tights. However, the two words are not synonymous as the word tights refers to opaque pantyhose.

Spandex, Lycra or elastane, is a synthetic fiber known for its exceptional elasticity. It is stronger and more durable than rubber, its major non-synthetic competitor. It is a polyurethane-polyurea copolymer that was invented in 1959 by chemist Joseph Shivers at DuPont's Benger Laboratory in Waynesboro, Virginia. The material was patented by the Spanjian brothers?Robert and Richard?and was further used in their company, Spanjian Sportwear. When first introduced, it revolutionized many areas of the clothing industry.
The product name "Spandex" was given to the Spanjian family after DuPont recognized their contributions. "Spandex" is the preferred name in North America; in many European countries it is referred to as "elastane".
A brand name associated with spandex is Lycra.
Other spandex trademarks include Elaspan (also Invista's), ROICA & Dorlastan (Asahi Kasei), Linel (Fillattice), and ESPA(Toyobo).
