I Love My Dad

We Should Appreciate Our Parents While We Still Have the Chance

Most of us only have one chance to have a good mom or a good dad, and that's it.

The reason I am writing this is to help us all appreciate our parents, and if we still have the time, to show it by saying "I Love You."

When they are gone, and it is only too soon that they will be, then it will be too late to show them that we care. There is no going back.

If you are fortunate to have a good parent be very proud. Not everyone gets to have a decent home life.

I am very fortunate in that area. My parents are good people and gave me a great start. They are caring, God-fearing and serving, and have always striven to give me and my brother good values. Of course they were not perfect, but, neither am I. They did their very best.

I am not just thinking of my dad because it is June, I think about him every single day. I didn't used to when he was younger, stronger and healthier, but, now every single day that we have him is a blessing, and I know it will not last nearly long enough. So I think of him constantly.

My dad is my hero and my role model. I only hope I will be able to follow his great example.

Dad Was Raised in Brevard North Carolina

The Last Family Reunion we Had with My Parents there-dad is outside as usualMy dad was raised in Brevard North Carolina. His parents were good but poor people. Dad didn't do well in school, so he always tried to get out of going. My dad was the middle of 8 children. His nickname was Pet, called that by his siblings-His baby sister Betty told me that before we lost her. I'm sure you can guess why. Everyone has always loved him as he has had an easygoing carefree way about him his entire life.

At thirteen he felt so strongly about not wanting to go to school, that he ran away for the first time. He went to New York. I can't imagine a child of 13 being on the loose at that time, but in fact it was different times, and he made it alright.

He came back home, but then he left again when he was 15. This time he and a friend went to California, where he said he was older so he could get work. He was a scrawny little kid, which makes me wonder how anyone believed he was older. I wonder if they did. He had a few different jobs, and evidently he worked very hard and was able to keep them.

One of my Dad's Favorite Hobbies: Gardening and Grafting Fruit Trees

Pictured: Different Cherries on a Cherry Tree

Grafting of Cherry Tree

I want to tell you about some of what I do know firsthand about my dad.

Dad has always loved gardening and agriculture. I grew up with my folks on a few acres right outside of San Francisco. We had three acres of a vineyard-where we grew concord grapes. The property the home was on was on a hill, and dad had it terraced into 5 lawns, a vegetable garden, rose garden, iris garden, and I had an entire hill that I planted in ice plants. When they bloomed they were a profusion of vibrant color.

As the oldest child (of 2) my chores had a lot to do with weeding in the garden.

We had 27 fruit trees, and dad experimented with grafting. (He loved that.) I think there were at least 5 different apples on our apple tree. We had a cherry tree with different types of cherries grafted on it. Dad loved working in the garden and the vineyard.

Down through the years, even after we moved to the south dad continued working in the garden, and making our yard a little paradise.

My dad still loves piddling around with his garden, but, he can't do much now. My brother is great to help him.

When I was there a few days ago, dad's greatest joy was to sit out there and just watch his garden grow.

Dad Met My Mom and Created Their Own - Love Story

Love Story

Mom and Dad with my grandson Tyler-their great-grandsonHe finally met my mom, and after a few years they were married. I only know this from what I was told, so I can't go into any detail about it.

Dad served in the Second World War, and from what I have been told secondhand he never has been the same again. I hear the same said about a lot of men that went to war.

Personally I believe that my dad was just about the best husband a woman would want.

Mom and dad had a date 1 time a week for as long as they were able. When dad was young, he took dancing lessons at Arther Murry's Dance Studio-because my mom loved to dance.

I remember when she wanted a pool, dad put her in a pool. He cleaned it and mom and sometimes some of the rest of us went in-but not dad, he only cleaned it.

My dad always did everything in his power to make mom happy.

Dad and mom always acted like they were still on their honeymoon. I have always wondered what that was like.

My Dad has always been There for us- And He's Been Creative too

Home made go cartWhen I was growing up I remember, my dad worked for General Motors. He was such a good worker that they had him teaching the other men how to do their jobs better and faster. Although he began on the line, he was put into the office and given the title of Time Study Manager. So, he was very busy. Yet, he made time to do things with us and for us.

I remember when dad made my brother and I a sled. Of course it didn't snow where we lived which was in the California Bay Area, but we went up into the mountains, close to Donner Pass and went sledding. I hope to be able to get some of those pictures scanned into my computer to share with you.

Then, when I was a teen, dad made posts for me to practice my parking. I wasn't very good at parallel parking-but I learned and I am now. He was also pretty brave in helping me learn how to drive. We lived in the Bay Area outside of San Francisco. That means hills. He had an old stick shift I learned to drive with, and it wouldn't start with the ignition. I had to park on the top of an ncline, and then pop the clutch to start it. That was pretty brave of my dad-of course I didn't know any better so it wasn't brave of me.

It did come in handy when I vacationed in Mexico, I stayed in Guanajuato the previous Mexican Capital, and when asked if I wanted to drive I did. Then I was told that women won't drive there. Of course the city and roadways were built in the 1500's.

Since my dad was helping me with driving and didn't want to show favoritism he made my brother a go-cart. That was cute and I liked it too.

Sorry if I sound a little prejudiced. But I really am.

I think parents should take the time to spend with their kids, teaching them values, and just spending time with them.

The memories, the lessons taught, the impacting of your children s lives are irreplaceable.

Oh this is so sweet and yes, you were blessed indeed! We were a family of four children, but on our birthdays we could be the only one for a few hours - when we went out on a special date with our dad. It was a super tradition - and us girls learned much about how to order food on a date (not the cheapest and not the most expensive), and how to expect a man to treat us. Important memories I will never forget! I am thankful, too!

My dad worked out of town a lot when I was younger but he always spent all the time he could with me when he was home. Now I'm grown with two kids myself, I see him about every other day. It's wonderful. I did notice the older I got, the smarter he got.

I wish that I could have had a great dad growing up, but unfortunately that was not the case. My dad was in and out of my life until the age of 5, when he was out for good. I am currently working on being the best dad to my adopted son. I love being a dad and am so happy to be re-living this life experience.

I don't see my dad a lot, but I was blessed to spend some time with him recently and it was great. He's always been rather quiet, but in recent years he's opened up a lot and loves to talk about the things that interest him. He's actually a lot of fun to be around, even at age 80. I really enjoyed reading about your dad, Carmel. Your obvious love and sincere respect and admiration for him truly shine through in this very lovely page.
