I Love The USA

The USA Is My Home
I am proud to be an American. I love my country. I have traveled outside its borders and have been very glad when I got home. Don't get me wrong, there are other great countries in this small world of ours, but in my opinion the US is the best place to live. I know the words to the "Pledge of Allegiance" and sing the "National Anthem" when it is played.
As no one place is a utopia, even the US has it's drawbacks. If it were perfect the whole world would be just like us. Even with its imperfections, I think it is the greatest! I have created some vintage patriotic products to celebrate America's birthday, the 4th of July and will share them with you here. I will share recipes with you, too. You may even learn something you didn't know about this great country.

Happy Birthday, America!

America celebrates her birthday on July 4, also known as Independence Day. Common belief is that the Continental Congress declared independence from England on July 4, 1776, but it was actually July 2, 1776. The signing of the Declaration took place on August 2, 1776. The United States celebrates it's 234th birthday this year. Happy Birthday, America!

Winner of 2 Academy Awards, Born On The Fourth Of July is heralded as Oliver Stone's greatest work. The movie tells the story of a soldier of the Viet Nam war who becomes paralyzed from the chest down from wounds received in battle, his struggle with the VA medical system, and his political activity during his post-war awakening. Tom Cruise was nominated for an Academy Award for this role. This is one of the best and most truthful films about the Viet Nam war.
The Talk About The 4th
As American As Apple Pie
My Favorite Recipe

Deep Dish Apple Pie
Ingredients
* 6 cups thinly sliced, peeled cooking apples (about 2 pounds total)
* 1/4 cup sugar
* 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
* 1 tablespoon cornstarch
* 1/8 teaspoon salt
* 3/4 cup all-purpose flour or 1/2 cup all-purpose flour plus 1/4 cup whole wheat flour
* Dash ground nutmeg
* 3 tablespoons butter or margarine
* 2 to 3 tablespoons ice cold water
* Fat-free milk
* Frozen vanilla yogurt (optional)
Directions
1. Place apples in a 2-quart square baking dish.
2. In a small bowl combine sugar and cinnamon; set aside 1 teaspoon of the mixture. Stir the cornstarch and salt into the remaining sugar mixture; sprinkle evenly over the apples in the baking dish.
3. In a medium bowl stir together the flour and nutmeg. Using a pastry blender, cut in butter until pieces are pea-size. Sprinkle 1 tablespoon of the ice-water over part of the flour mixture; gently toss with a fork. Push moistened dough to side of bowl. Repeat, using 1 tablespoon at a time, until all the flour mixture is moistened. Form into a ball.
4. On a lightly floured surface, pat to flatten dough. Roll dough from center to edges into a 10-inch square. Cut decorative vents in pastry. Carefully place pastry over apples. Using the tines of a fork, press edges to sides of dish. Brush pastry with milk and sprinkle with the reserved sugar mixture.
5. Bake in a 375 degree F oven about 40 minutes or until the apples are tender and the crust is golden. Serve warm. If desired, serve with frozen yogurt or vanilla ice cream. Makes 8 servings.
If you prefer, you can add a bottom crust. Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425 degree F oven, then decrease oven temperature to 375 degrees F and bake for 40-50 minutes or until crust is golden brown.

I Pledge Allegiance

"I pledge allegiance to the flag of the United States of America and to the Republic for which it stands, one nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all."
In the 1950s and 1960s we recited the Pledge of Allegiance every morning in school. Today it is not allowed. I wonder why. There are many reasons given, but none that make sense to me. I don't understand how anyone can be offended by these words.
One Nation Under God
Should the phrase, one nation under God, be removed from the Pledge of Allegiance?
Fetching blurbs now... please stand byYes, it is offensive.
ArawynWalays says:
It should be as I learned it in 1953. "One Nation Indivisible with Liberty and Justice for ALL." The "under God" phrase, added in 1954, Divides Us by Religious belief. Why do Christians think it is necessary to add "under God", "In God we trust", and "so help me God" to everything American. One does Not have to believe in the biblical deities to be a Patriotic American! And do remember what your "son of God" is quoted as saying in Matthew 6:1-34.

vallain says:
I'm not sure "offensive" is the right word. My ancestors came to America in the 1600s and 1700s for religious freedom. We need to preserve that right and not legislate what religion or what God people should honor.
Posted June 25, 2010
Pukeko says:
I hate to see a one sided debate, so I will vote with separation of church and state (although, I think "offensive" is a bit strong).

No Way! Our country was founded on these principles.
familystorykeeper says:
Our nation exists as a free nation because of God. If we stop acknowledging his help, I don't believe we will remain a free nation.
Posted June 24, 2010
Brookelorren says:
If they do remove it, I will never say the pledge again. A nation without God is a nation that I will not pledge my allegiance to.
Posted June 24, 2010
mbgphoto says:
I think it is very important to remember the principles that this nation was founded upon. One nation under God is vital to the future of this country!!!
Posted June 20, 2010
BarbRad says:
I say, leave it in. If it is not under God, it is not secure. Of course, words don't make it so, if people don't mean them and consider themselves under God first.

Support Team USA

The World Cup is in full swing. Team USA is holding their own. There has been some extra media coverage about their last game which resulted in a draw instead of a win due to a controversial call by the officials.
Soccer is the most popular sport in the world. I wouldn't know because I don't follow it. I prefer my football via the NFL. But I do support Team USA!
Are you watching the World Cup? Is your country winning? I hope you are supporting them.

- Great lens and products. I have rarely met an American who wasn't patriotic.
I think here in the UK people are generally patriotic, but it's far more confusing: are we European, British or English, Scottish, Welsh, Northern Irish or Cornish?

- Congratulations on your purple star. I won't certainly blame you because you're a patriot! If everyone would be patriot and love their country as much as you do... or become as patriot and sincerely love the country they chose to live in; maybe things would be better everywhere, especially for as long as they don't make use of their supposed right of intervention; which I'm against, of course.

- I loved the videos, and have to agree that those girls did a great job on our national anthem. I was surprised to learn that the tune of our national anthem was a drinking song (unless I didn't get that part right). That amazes me, since the tune is not very singable. Most drinking songs I've heard are very singable.
