I Love Video Games

Ranked #3,443 in Games, #143,390 overall

Video Game Love For Nintendo, SNES, Sega Genesis, Playstation, Wii, and 3DS

Video games have been a part of my life for over 25 years. I know, I'm old, I'm a nerd, I've come to grips with it, just like I've come to grips with there will never be a Harry and the Hendersons remake. I wish I could tell you why I enjoy that movie, must be John Lithgow's witty charm and balding head. That's enough rambling--let's get back to video games. I grew up during the 80's so I got to experience firsthand how video games dominated in arcades then on home consoles--most notably the Nintendo Entertainment System. Gamers today have no idea that before Nintendo there was nothing. Other consoles prior to NES had terrible graphics and repetitive gameplay. There are a few Atari exceptions (note to self: prove there are Atari games still fun to play today). Owning a Nintendo Entertainment System was like having an arcade in your home. What was great about Nintendo was it seemed each month they had some new innovation, or new game you just had to play. Some of my favorite Nintendo memories are the first time I beat Super Mario, drinking tons of Mountain Dew and playing Contra with the Konami Code, and the Power Glove..."It's so bad." Ten points to you if you get this 80's movie reference. Hint: it was uttered by Lucas, a blonde bully. I loved how every bully in 80's movies was blonde. The best of them all was Johnny Lawrence in The Karate Kid. Sorry I can't stop rambling.

I love video games so much I'll even watch their counterpart movies that are awesomely bad like Street Fighter, Super Mario Bros., Mortal Kombat, and The Wizard. I love getting excited for new games and consoles, innovative graphics and most importantly, fun gameplay. A video game can have the coolest graphics but if the gameplay isn't fun who cares?

All Video Gamers Welcome

As you can tell from my other lenses I am addicted to creating video game lenses. So I created this one as a guide to all my video game lenses, where you will find the best video games and accessories, mostly from Nintendo, cheat codes and walkthroughs, video game lists, and more. I'm also sharing my video game collection for all the systems I've owned. Looking for Nintendo Wii U news? You will find updates and Tweets for Nintendo's upcoming gaming system--once dubbed Project Cafe. I'm already saving my money to buy the next Nintendo game console. Check out my list for the best video games of all time. Did I pick some good ones? Or omit some classics and new games that need some love? Do I need my head examined for adding NBA Jam to the list? You can add your favorite best video games ever to the list. Thanks for stopping by and I hope you enjoy my love for video games.

What Are the Best Video Games of All-Time?

Here's a question to think about--If you could only play 5 video games for the rest of your life, what would they be? Action/adventure or puzzle? Platformer or shooter? Do you ever get tired of your favorite RPG? The games can be chosen from multiple consoles and handhelds or all from one system. My five games would be (in no particular order):

Super Mario Bros. 3 (NES)

Mario is the reason I love video games so I'm choosing the best Mario game ever. The Tanooki suit was so cool and it was hard holding on to P wings. I would also like to thank the Oscar-worthy movie The Wizard for showing me how to get a warp whistle. It's amazing that Jimmy knew exactly where to squat in the most random of places to get the warp whistle having never played SMB 3 before.

Legend of Zelda (NES)

I knew it was special the moment I saw the gold cartridge. I could explore Hyrule for hours in this game.

Final Fantasy X (PS2)

Greatest video game storyline ever. This game had me in a trance it was so awesome with the beautiful graphics and epic battles. It was bittersweet when I defeated the game because I wanted it to just keep on going.

Goldeneye 007 (N64)

Best multiplayer shooter of all time. Sure the graphics don't stand up to today's video game standards but this all about the gameplay and hours upon hours playing license to kill proximity mines in the Combine.

Super Star Wars: The Empire Strikes Back

I normally wouldn't put this game in my top five but if I can only play five games the rest of my life you better believe there will be a Star Wars title in the mix. The only part I hate about this game are the cheap Hoth monsters. Otherwise, this game rocks. Luke learns Force abilities and the Plasma gun is awesome. I play this game at least twice a year.

Woot, nothing like embracing your hobbies. I'm a self confessed nerd myself. I can remember paying a quarter to play pong! That was back when a quarter could get you a hamburger at Mcdonalds.

Great work. Here's a movie fact for you - The 'power glove' in your title picture was also used in the 1989 film 'The Wizard' starring Fred Savage, which focused on the NES and Mario3.

Hey, I remember when Asteroids and Pong were hot! We've come a long way!
  • Kipper25 May 11, 2011 @ 5:57 pm | delete
Paper Mario (N64): That game charmed me to death.
Banjo - Kazooie (N64): Also charming, and just so much stuff to do.
The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker (GCN): My first and favorite Zelda.
Animal Crossing: Any version, really. A good game to play when I'm tired of beating people up in the others.
Super Smash Bros. Brawl: Huge Smash Bros. fan, here. I could play that forever!

Empire Strikes back was so cool on SNES. And so were the other Stare Wars games. My fav for PS1 is still FF7.

Super Mario Any day, especially if the NES Game!!! The Wii Super Mario isn't bad either!

What Was The First Video Game You Ever Beat?

Mine was Super Mario Bros. I left the game on pause for about 3 hours while I went to hockey practice. All I could think about at practice was getting past that pesky Hammer bro on 8-4 to get to Bowser. Needless to say, I got drilled into the boards a few times for not paying attention. When I got home I ran downstairs to make sure my game was still on, relieved I hadn't started a fire. In ten minutes I had saved the Princess and finished with Toad's wild goose chases through wrong castles.

Nintendo Wii Video Games and Consoles Lenses

I love the Wii for three reasons:
1.) The Wii Motion remote was a groundbreaking idea and got people of all ages playing video games.
2.) I can still play with a classic controller.
3.) I can play old school video games downloaded from Wii Virtual Console, which created in me a hardcore Retro Gamer.

North American Releases

Every game on Wii Virtual Console released in North America. I just wish they released more or at least had a more consistent schedule. I've bought well over 50 games on Virtual Console, mostly NES and SNES. What's great is if I'm bored I can spend $5 to download an old NES game to play for the night.

My Video Game Collection : Nintendo, Sega Genesis, Playstation

Looking at all these video games is like looking at snap shots of my life. When I see the Super Mario Bros. 2 box I remember the first time I played it at Greg Culbert's house and he spilled Kool-Aid on the carpet because he was so excited he defeated Mouser. Each game here represents a period of my life that makes it easier to fondly reflect. I know it's not the most impressive video game collection, but it's mine, precious. Mine!

Nintendo (NES) Games Collection

My first video game system ever--The NES--and what would be the start of a lifetime of video gaming. I got my Nintendo Entertainment System for Christmas and it was agonizing to see the familiar shaped box under the street for 3 weeks. The coolest thing about the old Nintendo is that everyone played it--you could talk with any kid about Nintendo games, controllers, tips, and codes. I miss that excitement of learning a new code or warp, and how some games were nearly impossible to beat (Ninja Gaiden or Ghosts 'N Goblins anyone?) unlike the ones today where eventually you will defeat the game. There was such a great satisfaction of when you finally beat a level or boss after a million or so trial and errors. You needed to be persistent and a bit demented to keep playing some of the harder games like Mega Man (without rapidly pressing Select to inflict more damage), Battletoads, and Karate Kid. I don't care how cool the graphics are in today's games, to me nothing is better than a fun 2D sidescrolling platformer.

Sega Master System Games Collection

I don't actually own a Sega Master System but I have downloaded these titles on Virtual Console. However, I am in the market to get one.

Super Nintendo (SNES) Games Collection

I hope one day that video games will go back to the old days of the SNES. Fun, fast-paced arcade action and tons of fighting games. The more I see of SNES' impressive library of games, the more I realized I missed out on a great system growing up. I had to have the Genesis because it had an edginess to their games and Super Nintendo was more thought of as a game system for kids. I was fortunate though to have a few friends who owned one so we could have all-night marathons of Super Mario Kart.

Sega Genesis Games Collection

Although my Sega Genesis days were mostly filled with EA NHL and Madden, I still made time for the biggest video game genre craze of the 90's--Fighting games like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter II. Every once in awhile my friends and I will round up and play these old classics to see who can perform the best fatality or brilliantly mimic "SHO-RYU-KEN!"

Playstation Games Collection

I held on to my Genesis as long as I could, but the alluring graphics of the Playstation finally won me over. The first time I played Resident Evil 2 was at about 11 pm. Bad time to start a scary game like this when you're not expecting dogs to jump through windows since in every game you've played before the background was always stationary.

Nintendo 64 Games Collection

Just bought the N64 from my cousin for $20. Life is good. My roommate in college had an N64 and I had a Playstation. We played sports games on the Playstation and had epic battles of Goldeneye and Mario Kart on the N64. Our dorm became the video game hub of the floor. I can still smell the beer, cigarettes, and see the line of impatient gamers waiting to grab hold of a controller. The rule was that whoever took last place in a game gave up his controller and went back to the end of the line. Poor suckers, they never stood a chance at Bond when playing proximity mines in the Complex.

Playstation 2 (PS2) Games Collection

When the PS2 came out I couldn't believe how awesome the graphics were compared to the PS1. I had to have one so I bought one with a Sears charge card. Six years later the card was paid off and I had played possibly the greatest game ever Final Fantasy X. Well worth it.

Nintendo Wii Games Collection

For a brief period I had stopped playing video games toward the end of the Playstation 2 cycle. I had grown bored of the same old hockey and football games I bought year after year, and Guitar Hero and Rock Band were fun, but not enough to keep this old gamer addicted for too long. Then came the Wii, with motion controls and my favorite video game icon Mario in a galaxy adventure. I was back, baby. On top of the great selection of Wii games I could also download my favorite retro games on Virtual Console. I am set for life for the amount of Nintendo, SNES, Genesis, and N64 classic games I've downloaded. I'd have a ton more Wii games if I didn't spend so much on retro VC games, even though they're only $5-8.

Nintendo 3DS Games Collection

The Nintendo 3DS is my first handheld video gaming device. I had always held off because of the small screen size. But when I heard I could play real 3D games without the glasses I started selling old hockey cards to help pay for this baby. Well worth losing a few Brett Hull and Steve Yzerman RC's--especially since I have about 50 of each.
