How I Brush Up on Color, My Artist Statement
Welcome to my Art Studio. Where I usually produce a painting a day or more. I love hearing from other artists, and art lovers. I am a professional mid-career artist and have painted California city and landscape for many years. I have turned what I love, making art, into my fulltime work. In this lens and my other Squidoo lens's you will find examples of my paintings as well as links to powerful business tools to help you becoming a professional artist. There are many artist career and business topics I hope to share as time permits. I work mainly in acrylic and pen and ink you can find my original art for sale on eBay, with prints and gift items here and in Cafe'Press. Color is the first thing you notice about my work. What makes it 'pop' is the placement of color and texture.
The primary colors in my palette are derived from the colors in the original rainbow flag which represent sexuality, healing, sun, nature, art, harmony and spirit.
The technique of my paintings consists abstract to realism while staying within my same color palette range. Sometimes I combine elements of both abstract art and realist art in my artwork, sometimes there is also a folk art and impressionism influence.
My Subject matter tends to be portraits, of people, pets, places and things. Architectural portraits such as building and home portraits, street scenes both historical places and interesting structure make up a large section of my portfolio. Automobile portraits, I love classic muscle cars and some antique autos. Urban city life in my community makes up a large section of my art also, such as my pictorial commentary on gay culture, beach life and travel and finally landscape.
I paint the experience through my art of where I live and places I travel. Having grown up in an old Victorian home, I love old buildings and history, and then mixed in with the everyday activity of the current neighborhood setting and modern color. Two of my favorite places near to where I live are Balboa Park and Old Town San Diego. I go out photograph my city all the time, taking hundreds of pictures, looking for just the right visual or story to portray on canvas back at my studio.
As a painter I am a visual storyteller.
I began painting when at the age of five years old. My mom had a paint by numbers set of the ship "The USS Constitution - Old Ironsides" and I got into it and finished the painting. With the left over paint created some other little paintings on paper and scraps of wood. I couldn't wait to do another painting.
Soon afterward, my aunt brought me a couple of art books and I discovered the French Impressionist painters. I liked Monet Gauguin, Sisley and Van Gogh the best and drawn to the brushstrokes and styles of these artist. I started copying these masters and gave the paintings to my relatives as gifts.
Around the age of six in public school art class I realized that I wanted to be an artist especially after a local artist who made sculpture came to visit us in class. My favorite things in school where "show and tell" and "art class". Over the next few decades years I turned making and selling - painting into my vocation.
My favorite things to paint vary, and my favorite piece of art is usually the one I am working on at the time. While I am making it, whether it's a cityscape, landscape, a portrait, or abstract the art belongs to me, and when the artwork completed I enjoy sharing it with the world. This is where my show and tell experience comes in.
The process for making my art pieces includes photography, drawing, painting, and field trips, where I visit sites to paint and discover new places at the same time. Being an avid photographer, I take many pictures of my subjects and when I return to the studio, I dissect them and compile new scenes on canvas or paper. I first make a small painting around 8 x 10 to 16 x 20 inches, if I like it; I move on to make a larger painting.
Originally, I made these small paintings to create a portfolio to show gallery for consideration and soon realized that people wanted the little paintings because they would fit into their homes and offices. Therefore, I continue to sell and market my little paintings.
I paint mostly in acrylic and mixed media, where I can include details in ink with the acrylic. I also enjoy pen and ink. Black ink and white paper are a departure from my bold color when I step back and take a break from it.
Most of my art scenes depict iconic and historic American city and country architecture, and street-scenes including where I live, San Diego, California. I am fortunate to live in this beautiful city and amazing state that is inspiring to me everyday with its diverse topography, peoples that I experience in brilliant color in shapes and feelings. I paint and draw originals and reproduce into prints and then can share with everyone who comes to my studio and exhibits and beyond.

What Im working on - Little paintings on note cards
Lately the art I'm making is hand painted and drawn miniature paintings of some of my popular scenes on note cards signed and stamped by me. I discovered living in a part of the city where homes are small and so is the wall space in them, that people wanted to purchase works of art but where limited in display areas in the home. My solution, smaller art works!You can see some of these in the link below to eBay. I usually make about 10 to 20 similar images of the same scene. However no two are alike so I do not number them.
Other than an art opening or gallery show eBay is the only place you can get one of my little original hand embellished paintings and drawings on note cards. These little pieces of art are signed, stamped and painted by myself.
As an artist, who is blessed to be successful, I believe it's important that everyone be able to access art. The Internet has proven to be a fantastic outlet for art collecting. Galleries and museum shops may be intimidating for some shoppers so I make these little originals for my customers, post them on the Internet and clients and patrons to look at and purchase at your convenience. The Internet is an affordable way to start an art collection. As time permits I try and add a few new pieces for you each week onto eBay.
The technique I use on the cards is called "Hand Embellish" or "Over Paint" in some galleries. Hand Embellish means the artist of the original work (me) actually does the art work. Over-Painting means an assistant has done the work under the artist's direction. I do not use an assistant on this art. I use acrylic paint and ink and restore the colors from my bright palette and give it texture at the same time and a protective finish is then applied to preserve your art.
Each hand embellished painting is a little different and a one-of-a-kind painting, no two are alike. I make each one, myself and my signature and official seal on the back authenticate that I made it.
I also make much larger paintings and am in the process of preparing some large scale shows which are posted below in this lense. Most times I start my art work with a preliminary painting that is around 8 x 10 to 11 x 14 inches in size and if I like it I will make a larger one. By making the smaller paintings and drawings I stay in practice of art making and save valuable time and money.

Riccoboni, known as a painter of Love, light, and joy, says - I love and appreciate both new and old buildings along with the California history that surrounds them. I first went out in search of old homes to paint, and soon realized there was much more beauty to be in this beautiful city. Now I seek out special places around San Diego County as subjects for my art, and compliment them with images and of everyday activity and neighborhood street scenes and landscapes. Some of my favorite places in San Diego are Balboa Park, Coronado Island, La Jolla and Old Town. I am an avid photographer, known, to take hundreds of pictures, looking for just the right visual composition and story to portray on canvas.
RD. (Randy) Riccoboni is an innovative American-born painter (California, 1960), influenced by his living in the suburbs of New York City, Los Angeles and San Diego. A published and self-taught artist, he credits encouragement by family and teachers for his drive and inspiration. The artist resides and paints in San Diego, California.

Art Show Highlights include scenes of national LGBT pride celebrations including San Diego's famous pride parade. The exhibit also features paintings of landmark architecture in Balboa Park, downtown and across San Diego County. RD Riccoboni is the official artist of the Historic Lafayette Hotel and has painted the LGBT community for over 20 years. This Special Art exhibit held during San Diego's largest civic event, the 33rd annual San Diego LGBT Pride celebration. The Pride Celebrations will take place on Saturday and Sunday, July 21-22, 2007 with the parade through Hillcrest along University and Sixth Avenue on Saturday, July 21 and the festival on July 21-22 in Balboa Park, San Diego, California.

Mr. Riccoboni, I'll never forget the day I saw your original ?Rainbow River? painting at the Los Angeles County Museum / Gallery back in the 90's. Not only did I cry but it brought back such fond memories of that day in New York with my friends watching the mile long flag unrolled down Second Avenue

Riccoboni Most Asked Questions at my studio
Asking questions of other professionals is the best ways to learn.
Great question, I get asked this the most. What I have learned is when people ask this, what they really want to know is how much money do you make an hour? Each painting varies in time, some have taken as little as a hour in the afternoon to weeks. It all depends on detail and my mood. The average painting usually takes about 3 to 4 hours.
As far as how much money do I make an hour, I reply that each artist should know exactly how much it cost to create a painting from beginning to end. It is the only way an artist will learn how to charge properly for ones work. We have all seen canvas' selling for obscenely low amounts of money, when you add up the canvas and the paint and the time, you often will see an artist who wont be pursuing their career very long. A business that does not know how much it cost to operates will soon be out of business.
2) What kinds of brushes and paints do you favor using and why?
While I am not here to endorse a product I will say that you do get what you pay for. I have been painting for over 40 years and some of my brushes Ive had since I was in my twenties. Always chose quality in your paint and your brushes.
3) Do you paint straight from the scene or do you digitally manipulate photographs to get a desired effect first?
When you say straight from the scene I assume referring to Plein Air painting. In that regards no, I am a studio painter. I also paint with acrylic paint and to me it dries to fast to use outdoors in the climate I live in. I am an avid Photographer, and have been known to take hundreds of photos of my subject which I take to the studio and use for reference. I usually draw my scene first then color it in though at times I do paint ala prima. I make sketches too. I am self taught so I don't much about manipulation but I have seen beautiful work produced by artist on the computer. I also believe that there is no wrong way to create art.
4) What main elements do you tend to look for in choosing a good building or composition to paint?
I am all about color and perspective, I go out in search of the perfect perspective in my scenes, then I interpret my color palette into the artwork. I also like interesting structures that tell a story. Part of the fun is being a story teller and catching the attention and evoke emotion in the viewer of the painting.
5) Where do you take your main inspiration from in these paintings?
I'm inspired by beautiful sunny days in California and my gratitude for living in such a beautiful section of the world. I also am an architecture lover of great design and historic structures.
6) Which other artists have had a strong influence on you and your technique?
To many to name, but here are a few, David Hockney, Peter Max, Andy Warhol, Anna Hyatt Huntington, Ivy Bottini, Paul Cadmus, The Impressionist masters, the American Impressionist masters, John Singer Sargent, Edward Stiechen, Edward Weston, Richard Diebenkorn, Kieth Haring, Andrew Wyeth, Edward Hopper, and the list goes on.
7) One thing I really gain from your paintings is the importance you place on colour. Why do you place such importance on a vibrant and varied use of colours rather than darker tonal work?
Just like in life a sense of place is important and this translates into painting as well. People are drawn to color and the placement of it is important, placed incorrectly, the painting can become kitschy and look folksier or craft like. Bright colors are my personal taste and not for everyone. My palette is derived from the colors in the original rainbow flag. The colors represent many of life's different facets. Bold color simply makes me feel alive when I use it, even if its just a speck of it.
8) One thing I find difficult with painting buildings is the restrictions placed by the rigidness of its design. Perfect angles, sizes and straight lines have to be considered carefully or the building will not look correct. Do you find this a restriction for you with such an expressive style of painting?
Yes, I understand, that is where learning perspective for important for me. I have even taking a drafting class to assist in that. Once you get perspective down you will see it everywhere you look. Then comes shading, and the light. This also plays into perspective when you paint it can deceive the eye into thinking it sees a straight line or just about anything.
9) If this is a challenge, how do you overcome it? Practice, practice, practice. Ask questions and read up on your favorite artists, and of course step up to the canvas and create. The only way to overcome any obsticle or challenge is action.
