Geocaching is one of the fastest growing recreational activities in the world. More than five million people of all ages currently engage in these incredibly fun treasure hunting challenges. In the next week alone, there are hundreds of known events taking place in over 25 countries worldwide. Just this month, more than five million geocaching logs were submitted online. Geocaching is huge!

What is geocaching? It is the modern version of finding hidden treasure with a GPS device. You are provided with coordinates and clues for finding unusual treasures in amazing outdoor locations near you and throughout the world.

Did you know that you can now use your iPhone or Android for geocaching? Learn how to get your application and mobilize for your next outdoor adventure. Why not gear up and head on out today?

When you first begin geocaching, you need to know how and where to find the hidden caches near your home or near your travel destinations. The best way to do that is to join the online Groundspeak geocaching community. It's the very first thing I did when I wanted to learn more about this activity and to have my first adventure.

There are so many benefits to the free membership. Not only do you get GPS coordinates for finding caches, but you also learn a great deal. There is information about how to geocache, where to get involved in geocaching events, and access to key resources that support your successful participation in this activity.

Once you find a geocache, you can log on and submit your comments and photos. It's a great way to connect with others and to share your experiences and geocaching victories.

You have the option of a basic or a premium membership. The free basic membership is more than enough to get you started. I've been happy with that membership level. You can always decide later if you want to splurge for premium membership benefits. When you have finished reading this web page, simply click on the compass icon within this box to get your free Groundspeak geocaching membership.

Prefer a GPS handheld device?

If a smartphone is not in your immediate future, you have plenty of other GPS options. I purchased a Garmin GPSMAP 76CSx after using a similar model in my work with the National Park Service.

I wanted a GPS device that had marine mapping options for kayaking and boating, as well as a unit that would work really well in heavy cover, such as in the deep woods or in canyons and mountainous areas. The 76CSx fit my needs perfectly.

My Garmin has been an exceptional performer both on land and on sea. I used it just this week to find two geocaches that were located in very rugged mountainous terrain. This is one of the best investments you can make if you love outdoor adventures. Of course, you can also use it for navigating on the roads in any vehicle.

Featured below are several excellent GPS options that fit many different budgets.

Cool...we're geocachers...my youngest even found one (by accident) in the bush in our back yard without coordinates or knowing it was there...LOL...after a while you just start looking in "trees that look like they could hide something" ...hahaha

A big smile and hello to a fellow Geocacher!! We usually use the iPhone in the more urban areas, and the GPS when we're out of range of cellphone services. Great lens!!
  • MiddleSister Aug 27, 2011 @ 1:12 pm | delete
It's great to know that you don't need to buy or rent a special, separate GPS unit to do geocaching.
  • Kris10P Aug 6, 2011 @ 1:33 am | delete
I tried geocaching once, but couldn't find the cache. Guess I need a more experienced geocacher to help me get started.

I've done a little geocaching, but I actually used a map and compass. I was learning those skills at the time, and it was a good and fun way to practice. After learning that well, I moved on to using a GPS, but I've never done geocaching with it and never with an iPhone or Android, neither of which I've even touched. The idea of having one of these new gadgets is growing on me, though.
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Apr 22, 2011 @ 10:20 am | delete
Yes... the perfect way to practice new navigational skills. Smartphones can be very handy when traveling. Not just for GPS functionality, but also for email, making last-minute travel adjustments, etc. I could have really benefited from a smartphone many times during my last adventure.
  • emmalarkins Apr 16, 2011 @ 1:44 pm | delete
Yet another reason to get one of those new smart phones!
  • RenaissanceWoman2010 Apr 16, 2011 @ 2:21 pm | delete
Yes! The reasons just keep adding up. :-) Thanks for stopping by!
