iPhone 3G insurance - Frequently asked questions

Never, ever, ever think that you can save a bit of coin buy not purchasing iPhone insurance. My problem was though that the 'high street provider' that we all know was going to charge me £15 per month. Within this quick website, I plan to answer a few simple questions which will hdefinitely help you guys to decide which path to take when choosing your iPhone 3G insurance. After all its not an easy task, I should know!

I lost 2 brand new iPhones within a 2 month period earlier this year. I didnt have any insurance either! I was stupidly reluctant to take out a policy due to the fact I was being scared off by O2's £15 per month product. I was only paying £35 per month for the actual tariff, and i could believe I had to pay almost half of that again just to insure the headset. Crazy!

So I decided to do a bit of research, and have developed the below list of FAQ's for everyone's benefit!

How much should I be paying for my iPhone 3G insurance?

Definitely not £15 per month!!

As mentioned previously O2's insurance plan is £15 per month - I find this amount outrageous! Get online yourself and do some research. Did you know that 'iPhone 3G insurance' produced 3,640,000 results on google at the time this lens was published? There are plenty of companies out there begging for your business, why dont you contact them, sort out a deal, and make everyone happy?.

I would say a good monthly figure would be between £8 and £10 per month

I have also written a pretty cool article describing this exact topic called iPhone 3G insurance - 3 easy ways to save money

What is the best independent iPhone 3G insurance company out there?

There are many, but...

The best I could personally find on the open market was from a company called www.insureit.2u.co.uk. Their product is underwritten by Equity Redstar who are FSA regulated. But the best part is that there is no 12 month contractual tie in which you would usually expect.

Their current premium works out at £8.24 per month - not a bad saving!!

What Should I expect from the iPhone 3G insurance product?

Its very important you fully cover yourself!

It's very important that the policy you choose covers you for whats needed. All I can say, is please read the fine print prior to fully committing. The last thing you want is to have problems with your phone, make a claim and find out that you are not covered!

As a bare minimum your policy needs to have the following:

1. One month free.
2. Fraudulent Call Cover.
3. Water damage Cover.
4. Theft cover.
5. International calls cover.
6. Accidental damage cover.
7. FREE Address Book Backup.
8. £600 cover.
9. You need to have your phone within 48 hours!

What about small print on iPhone 3G insurance policies?

Make sure you are awareof the following....

Check out a sample terms and conditions to get a feel for the small print. Its important you guys have a read through in detail to make sure you know whats going on.

However a few big ones to look out for are as follows:

1. The policy will need to cover any phone up to the retail value of £600.
2. You must be aware that any excess over this will need to be covered by yourself.
3. In order to qualify for insurance. your phone must be less than 6 months old, with valid UK proof of purchase (not from online auctions)
4. Customers with phones older than 2 months at point of ordering may not be able to claim for the first 28 days.
5. Most iPhone policies now dont cover loss

Is there any other way to obtain dirt cheap iPhone 3G insurance?

Yes, of course. But you must be creative!!

Are you a home owner? Did you realise that you may be able to add you phone to your Home Contents Insurance? Actually I take that back! You may already be covered by your home contents insurance! I went down this path when I lost my first iPhone, but unfortunately I didnt completely follow through with the the replacement as it was going to affect my 'no claims bonus'. The numbers just did not add up for me at the time. However, I did call them up a few months afterwards with an unrelated query and discovered I could actually purchase 'no claims bonus' protection for about £1.50 per month.

Please note though, that this particular type of policy will not cover you for the fraudulant calls made. Also do the usual and check the excess payment amount, and also the total max payout! Remember iPhones can cost up to £600.
