Well, besides using a cleanup tool there are a few steps you can take to help get your iTunes library into shape. The first step is to always use the cleanup features built directly into iTunes(these features will be explained below). Unfortunately these features usually won't cleanup all of your songs.

There are three different features you can use in your effort to cleanup iTunes. these features should be useful for some users but for people with more complicated problems using the cleanup tool is the best option.The most common problems are missing or incorrect song information for songs downloaded from places other than iTunes.

In this case iTunes will not return any song information or the appropriate cover art leaving your library a complete mess. It really comes down to the size of your cleanup job. If you have 1000s of songs that need cleaning than an iTunes cleaner will be your new best friend. But if you only have a fifty messed up songs you should be able to clean them yourself.

Cleanup Feature #1 - Show Duplicates

Step by Step Instructions from Apple Support:

1. Choose File > Display Duplicates to show duplicate items (matches are based on the song name and artist). If you have multiple versions of the same song (for example, live and studio versions, or versions from different albums) you can hold the Alt or Option key (for Mac OS X) or the Shift key (for Windows) and choose File > Display Exact Duplicates. This will show only duplicate songs having the same name, artist, and album.



2. Sort by the date you added the song to iTunes by clicking the Date Added column.



3. To delete the older items: click on the item with the oldest date, hold down the Shift key, and click on the older item next to the most current date. Then delete the duplicate items by choosing Edit > Delete.



Note: If you have the same content synced with another computer, you will need to make sure that you replace the older content with the newer content in your library.

Cleanup Feature #2 - Get Album Art

For some songs you can use the built in feature for finding album art directly through iTunes. Unfortunately this method probably won't find all of your missing cover art, but its definitely a nice starting point for cleaning up your iTunes songs. You shouldn't see blank album covers when you flip your iPod or iPhone to the cover flow view.

1. Choose Advanced > Get Album Art to have iTunes look up your missing album art.





Cleanup Feature #3 - Find Song Info

If you are dealing with missing song names you can use a feature similar to the get album art function. For songs not downloaded through iTunes you will probably not be able to find the info. If you happen to wind up with tons of mislabeled songs than this is where Rinse will come in and fully restore your library.

1. Choose Advanced > Get Track Names and iTunes will find track names for songs downloaded through the store.

If the free tools built into iTunes don't cut it, you're going to have to add another tool to your arsenal. If the bulk of your music is from sources other than the iTunes store, chances are a cleanup tool will be a necessity for you to get your library restored.
